THE FINAL TWO first round matches concluded at the Victoria Stadium, Gibraltar and then Karl Boyes overcame a 7-1 deficit to overturn Ralf Souquet to become the first player to reach the last four of the 25th annual Mansion Bet World Pool Masters.

The Dynamic Billard BHR Treviso Open 2018 in Italy have been quite successful for the Austrian contingency so far. Three players have made it to the stage of the final 16 out of an initial starting group of 153 players.
Maximilian Lechner (AUT) is probably the biggest surprise of the group. He defeated Ante Sustic (CRO) 9:7 in his first match. Then, his way led him over Reda Belhaj (FRA) 9:2 before he had to give in 5:9 to Sergey Lutsker (RUS) in the winner’s qualification round today. But Lechner stood tall and won the loser’s qualifier with 9:7 over strong junior player Maksim Dudanets (RUS) 9:7. In the first single elimination round, when 32 players were left in the field, Lechner had to deal with Tomasz Kaplan (POL). The Polish is known to be a bit of a surprise box meaning that he has performed from world-class to low-class and everything in between over the recent years. Today, Kaplan’s performance was not good enough while Lechner found his A-game against his experienced opponent. 9:1 was the final result in favour of Lechner who will now play against fellow teammate Mario He (AUT) in the next round.

First round wins for Pag, Shane and Dyno
THERE WAS MORE first round action at the 25th annual Mansion Bet World Pool Masters and there were wins for Alex Pagulayan, Shane Van Boening and Darren Appleton, who came from behind to beat Earl Strickland in a thrilling encounter.
In the opening match, Alex Pagulayan, a winner in Las Vegas in 2008 beat 1999 champion Alex Lely in a confrontation that saw both players struggle to get to grips with the conditions. With a high level of humidity currently in Gibraltar, the Rasson table was running a little slower than usual. That said, Pagulayan had a little too much for his veteran opponent.

Wins for Souquet, Boyes and Feijen as defending champ goes out
THE 25TH ANNUAL Mansion Bet World Pool Masters got underway at the Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar as the first three first round matches took place. And there were wins for veteran Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen and Karl Boyes and all take their places in the quarter-finals over the weekend.
Souquet, a record-breaking six-time winner of this event, took out 2012 champion Karol Skowerski, Poland by 8-4. It was close until half-way through until Souquet turned the screw to run out a winner.

The BHR Treviso Open gets underway Thursday morning
The inaugural stop of the 2018 Dynamic Billard Eurotour starts here in Treviso Thursday morning with 155 plus players from over 30 countries making the trip to Italy. Because of an unavoidable date clash with the world pool masters, a few of the top players are missing from this event but that could play to the advantage of the other elite that are here. With a total prize fund of 36,000 Euros there will be plenty of jostling for that elusive first prize and some valuable ranking points that could prove crucial come the end of the season.
Wiktor Zielinski, Poland’s rising star will be one of the favourites after his impressive performance at the last tour stop in 2017 but he will not be alone. Italy’s Fabio Petroni makes a rare appearance and will be heavily supported by the home crowd as will his fellow countryman, Daniel Corrieri. Austria’s Mario He will be pushing hard to better his last appearance, losing in the final last time out to young Wiktor, he will be firing on all cylinders to reverse that result which could see him top the rankings if successful.
A massive promotional push by the EPBF and Kozoom will see Thursday’s play entirely free for everyone who registers on the Kozoom website and you can also follow the main TV table on the EPBF facebook page throughout the day.

Filler and Boyes join Masters line-up
Joshua Filler and Karl Boyes have joined the line-up for this weekend’s MansionBet World Pool Masters in Gibraltar after Francisco Bustamante and Tony Drago were forced to withdraw.
Filler propelled himself onto the global scene last summer when he won the WPA China Open, which helped him qualify for December’s Mosconi Cup. He then thrived on pool’s biggest stage in Las Vegas, claiming the MVP award while European fans found a new fan favourite as their side defeated USA 11-4.
One of England’s most successful players, Boyes has always excelled at the top level. WPA World 8-Ball champion in 2010, he lifted the World Cup of Pool alongside Darren Appleton in 2014, was runner-up at the US Open in 2015 and has won the Mosconi Cup four times.
Boyes will face defending Masters champion David Alcaide in the first round on Friday evening after Drago was forced to pull out through illness. Filler will come up against Jayson Shaw on Saturday evening with visa issues denying Bustamante the chance to participate.
“It’s great to be back at the World Pool Masters,” said ‘Box Office’ Boyes. “I didn’t play a lot last year but I’m back now and feeling good after winning on the GB 9-Ball Tour last week.

Congratulations to the three big winners at this event, namely Karl Boyes, Mark Gray, and Bob Harris, who all took the big silverware home, along with putting a notch on the tree of pool history in the UK.
There was a really good atmosphere at this event, with a lot of the players liking the new position of the TV table in the main room, and just generally a nice positive buzz at this event - it's not something I can put my finger on, but everyone seemed to be fresh and enthusiastic, and we had a good bit of fun.
