Saturday/Sunday 14-15 May 2017
Aslam Abubaker – Simonis Grand Prix Champion
The BWPPA tour descended on Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley once again for tour stop 2 of the campaign, the Simonis Grand Prix. This event saw the largest field for a BWPPA tour weekend in a number of years. Among the entrants were 2 debutants Lee Woodward from Birmingham, and Graham Brown from London. We were also delighted to welcome back to the tour Sheffield’s Gary Swift and Birmingham’s Adam Pearson.
Brown couldn’t have had a tougher welcome to the BWPPA tour losing 7-1 to former BWPPA #1 Abubaker. Abubaker followed that up by winning two tough matches, he beat current #1 and man of the moment Daniel Lee 7-5 before coming through a hill-hill encounter with Swift 7-6.

Pool players around the UK will be returning to Telford in June as the 9th annual Paul Medati Trophy once again takes place at the Park Inn by Raddison hotel. Players of all disciplines, not least 9-ball and snooker, will have memories of Paul as a player and a genuinely great person. Paul started in the snooker ranks, becoming a professional player in his earlier life before turning to 9-ball. Paul played in the inaugural season of GB9 back in 2008 before sadly losing his battle with cancer shortly afterwards. Paul is remembered as one of the friendliest players on tour and was rarely seen without a smile on his face. The event was dedicated to Paul in 2009 and has been hosted every year since, becoming one of the most sought after titles of the year. This year’s event will begin on the afternoon of Friday 23 June, with the main event concluding on the Saturday evening. Mark Gray picked up his second main event title of 2016 at this event last year and will be bidding to retain the title previously won by the likes of Craig Osborne, Mick Hill and Chris Melling in recent years.

2017 IPA Tour Event 2 – The English Open
The location was Bradford, the venue the Bradford Hotel, for the second intriguing stop on the 2017 IPA Tour and up for grabs were three titles – the Open, The Professional and the Amateur events, all in association with long term sponsors JLEC.
200 plus of the best pool players descended on West Yorkshire all eager not only for the titles, but to also sample the great atmosphere and camaraderie that engulfs each IPA event. As well as the usual suspects – with Professional Number One Marc Farnsworth leading the way, we also welcomed top snooker Professional Mark Allen, who had come to see what all the fuss was about.
We started off on Friday with the Open event, which was paused around 8pm for the Annual IPA Awards, which celebrate the fantastic achievements of these highly skilled blackball players we are all so lucky to have with us on the number one tour.

Naoyuki Oi: Crazy Interview? No, That’s Just Me
Ahead of his trip to London to represent Japan at the forthcoming World Cup of Pool, global sensation Naoyuki Oi has insisted he was just being himself in the interviews which gave him worldwide fame earlier this year. The Japanese No.1 made waves across the globe in February with his hilarious post-match interview at the Dafabet World Pool Masters, which took inspiration from PIKOTARO’s smash Japanese hit song PPAP (Pen Pinapple Apple Pen). Recent estimates conservatively suggest the video had been viewed in excess of 100 million times. As the world’s best players prepare to travel to York Hall, East London, June 13-18 for one of the sport’s biggest tournaments – the World Cup of Pool – Oi knows his post-match interview is likely to be almost as much anticipated as Japan’s first-round clash with Thailand.

Monday-Thursday 4-7 December 2017
He wins as VDB goes top Nick van den Berg leapfrogged Ralf Souquet to take pole position on the European Mosconi Cup rankings after the Eurotour Austrian Open. Van den Berg collected 23 points for reaching the last eight of the tournament, where he fell to eventual finalist Francisco Sanchez Ruiz of Spain. Mario He rises to fourth after collecting the title. Albin Ouschan, MVP at last year’s Mosconi Cup, climbs into the top ten as a beaten semi-finalist while the other defeated semi-finalist, Joshua Filler, moves up two places to eighth. Unlike previous years there will be only two rankings instead of three. The first will be the ‘European Ranking’ which includes the five European ‘A’ and five European ‘B’ events. The winner of this ranking will gain a spot on the Mosconi Cup side.

Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) just won the Dynamic Billard Austria Women’s Open in Alpina Wellness & Sports Hotel, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, with a clear 7:2 victory over Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER).
She was and is the powerhouse in European women’s pool billiard. Jasmin Ouschan has just completed the Austrian victory in St. Johann i.Pg. After Mario He’s victory from yesterday, she did not fall short and took the title in the women’s version of the Euro-Tour. Ouschan had a good start into the tournament. She took her first three victories impressively clear with 7:0 over Anne Darda (GER), 7:2 against Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) and 7:1 against Martine Christiansen (NOR). Then, her performance suffered a little bit. „I needed some help during some matches of this tournament“, stated Ouschan after the final match, „but our new national coach Andreas Roschkowsky from Germany is a really nice and knowledgeable person who I have a great contact with. He knew exactly what to say and analysed my matches spot-on so I could find my personal rhythm back“. The „turbulences“ in Ouschan’s way into the final match were caused by Ana Gradisnik (SLO) 7:4 and Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) where Ouschan was already trailing 0:4 but managed to win the match with 7:5. „There is still a lot of work to do“, said Roschkowsky, „we are on a great track but I have some new ideas for the future“. The semi-final was again a clear 7:1 victory for Ouschan. Her opponent in the final match was Veronika Ivanovskaia. The German lady had defeated Claudia von Rohr (SUI) 7:5, Sara Rocha (POR) 7:1 and in an epic battle in the semi-final Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 7:5.

Mario He (AUT) winning his second Euro-Tour title Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Mario He takes the title on home turf
Austria’s Mario He just clearly defeated Francisco Sanchez-Riuz (ESP) with 9:2 in the final match of the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open in Alpina Wellness & Sports Hotel, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria.
Mario He’s way into the final could not have been longer. He lost his opening match and had to take the long road through the loser’s side. Then, in the single elimination stage, he eliminated Tomasz Kaplan (POL) 9:8, Daryl Peach (GBR) 9:3, Marco Teutscher (NED) 9:4 and in the semi-final his teammate Albin Ouschan (AUT) 9:8. Sanchez’ way into the final match led over victories over Mark Gray (GBR) 9:2, Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) 9:6, Nick van den Berg (NED) 9:5 and in the semi-final Joshua Filler (GER) 9:7. The final match turned out to become a one man show by Mario He. Sanchez just could not find his rhythm. He even committed a time foul since the match was under the clock and he simply took too much time for his shot. After 9 racks, Mario He was up 8:1 and only a little step away from glory. Sanchez tried to give a bit more of a fight to Mario He and won another rack. But that was it for Sanchez. Mario He returned to the table and ran another rack, winning the final with a more than impressive result of 9:2. „I am over the moon“, said He after the match, „I had the worst of all starts and now I win the tournament here. Unbelievable!“ „I played quite solid in the single elimination stage but I also had strong opponents“, added Mario He. „This is my second victory on the Euro-Tour and it is always so special to win this coveted event“, mentioned He with a smile.
