Europe 4 – 1 USA Europe 5 – 2 USA Gray / Ouschan 5 – 2 Van Boening / Morris Niels Feijen 5 – 2 Mike Dechaine Shaw / Appleton 1 – 5 Woodward / Bergman Darren Appleton 5 – 3 Shane Van Boening TEAM EUROPE showed exactly why they are big favourites to retain the 23rd annual Betfair Mosconi Cup as they enjoyed a convincing opening session, winning four out of the five matches to take a 4-1 lead into day two. It was the worst possible start to the event for the Americans who have not won the Mosconi Cup since 2009. Even after just one day they face a mammoth task against a European side that looked confident throughout. Commented European captain Marcus Chamat, “The first day is always really tough. The way they put out their team, they came with their strongest but I feel there are no weak links in my team and whatever I came out with today, I had four aces. “My point of view was to put Albin out first because he made the winning 9 last year, so I wanted to start off where we ended. That worked out well, and Mark played awesome in the match. Then Niels went to work, and he played great. “For the day to end with Darren beating Shane, meant a lot to me, to him and to the team. The last match is always important to get under your belt. Darren fights with his heart just like I did when I was playing, I wanted it so bad and he wants it so bad too. It proved a point. The Betfair Mosconi Cup is the annual Europe v USA 9 ball showdown. It runs from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th December with all sessions getting underway at 18.30 GMT. There are a potential 21 singles and doubles matches with the first team to reach 11 carrying off the famous trophy. With 2,000 rabid fans in the Alexandra Palace, the vast majority of them pro-European, the atmosphere was wild from the off and the show opened with the customary team match where all ten players compete in consecutive racks.

Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Another one for Jasmin
Jasmin Ouschan just won the Treviso Women Open in BHR Best Western Hotel in Treviso, Italy, with a 7:3 victory over Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL).
The final match started with an expected lead for Ouschan. Khodjaeva seemed to be nervous since she missed several possible shots. However, during the course of the match Khodjaeva stayed within close range to Ouschan and the Austrian suddenly started making unnecessary mistakes.
When leading 3:2, Ouschan missed an easy 7-ball and allowed Khodjaeva to tie the match at 3:3. After having taken her time-out, Ouschan still seemed to be a bit off track. She missed shots and ran out of position.
That all allowed Khodjaeva to keep the match open for a while. However, Ouschan turned out to be the stronger player today since Khodjaeva could not benefit from Ouschan’s mistakes as the match continued. Ouschan did not necessarily play her best pool but Khodjaeva was not able to turn the tide in the match.
Finally, Jasmin Ouschan did not allow Kamila Khodjaeva any more point and took the match with a convincing 7:3 result over her opponent.

David Alcaide (ESP) Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Alcaide wins Dynamic Billard Treviso Open
In a more than thrilling final match, David Alcaide (ESP) won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open against Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:6.
The final match was as high class as expected. Alcaide and Filler came up with a great performance and delivered some high class pool action. However, due to the pressure also some mistakes have been committed by both players.
The fact that the final match and the semi-finals are played with a shot clock does its share to even raise the pressure. Alcaide had the better start in the final. He ran away with 3:0 before Filler got started. But the young German hung in there. He used his chances whenever given and kept the match a close and thrilling affair.
After nine racks, the scoreboard displayed a 5:4 lead for Alcaide with Filler to break. The rack turned into a safety battle and actually it looked like Filler would be able to force Alcaide to commit a foul. Alcaide answered this by playing a deliberate foul and putting the 2-ball and the 6-ball together. The rack was dominated by tactical play. In the end, Alcaide pocketed the deciding ball and got to a 6:4 lead. That was one important point in the final match.
Instead of Filler levelling the score at 5:5, Alcaide was now 6:4 up with his own break shot to come. He had an illegal break and Filler cleared to stay close with 5:6. The next break was Filler’s and he was really unlucky. He had three balls down but the cue ball got kicked and scratched in the corner pocket. Again, Alcaide got away with a 2-point-lead with his own break shot coming up. This time, he capitalised from his break shot. He almost ran out of position on the 3-ball but Lady Luck was on his side.
Alcaide got on the hill with an 8:5 lead over Filler. Filler won the next rack before Alcaide got to the table with his own break, leading 8:6. Alcaide missed the 2-ball but left the cue ball very close to another object ball for Filler. The German kid used a rest but touched the 3-ball while pocketing the 2-ball. With ball in hand, Alcaide conquered the table, took the match with 9:6 and won his second Euro-Tour after 2009.

In an exciting and thrilling final match in the U19 division with China’s Kong De Jing, Daniel Maciol could not get his best performance on the table and lost clearly with 2:11.
Throughout the whole event, Maciol demonstrated high class pool on a solid level. In the final, he missed some makable shots, fell out of position a few times and had an opponent who did not forgive him any mistake at all. Whenever Maciol showed a weakness, Kong benefitted from it and showed no mercy with the Polish. All Maciol’s break did not work for him in the whole match. Kong performed solidly and won the match very clearly but nonetheless deserved with 11:2.

In the first weekend of November the Mezz Cues Baltic Pool League 2016 Grand Final was held in the spectacular city of Riga, Latvia. The stars of the weekend were two athletes from Belarus. They were the winners of the men's division Dmitri Chuprov and women's and oldboy's division Margarita Fefilova.
Fefilova the best throughout the season
Fefilova's triumph was on the verge of a catastrophe as she narrowly escaped in her semi final from Genadijs Kaminskis (LAT) who paved the way for Fefilova's win by making a simple mistake with only three balls left on the table in a hill-hill rack. Another finalist Ojars Blezurs (LAT) was a firm winner over Agne Jaruśauskaite by a score 8:4. In the final Fefilova was brilliant and left no chances for Ojars as she claimed the title 8:1.
Fefilova showed great potting throughout the season. She won the first two qualification stages and was the firm winner of the overall qualification ranking list.

Despite wearing a multitude of hats at this event, including having to make a 4 hour round trip to collect the trophies due to a foul up by UK Mail - we're delighted that Lee Rigby has once again managed to find some time to share with us some terrific photos of the "places and faces" in action at the final GB9 event of the 2016 season.
Thank you Lee - indeed, a big thank you to all the tour staff this year, and good luck for the 2017 GB9 season.

Click the image to view the full size picture - use "back" to return here. Europe team set for Ally Pally fireworks JAYSON SHAW closed out a memorable qualifying campaign for this year’s Mosconi Cup as he won the final event – the Kuwait Open 9 Ball – to win both the Combined and World ranking lists. That gave the US-based Scot his first ever Mosconi Cup start and he will enter the fray on a wave of confidence. With Niels Feijen having taken the Euro ranking list spot, it meant that the final automatic berth on Team Europe reverted to the Combined list, and it was England's Mark Gray who took it to make his third Mosconi Cup appearance, eight years after his debut in Malta. For his wildcard picks, captain Marcus Chamat went firstly for Austria’s Albin Ouschan who had another stand-out year, winning the World 9 Ball Championship in Qatar. For his final pick, he went for experience, grit and determination with England’s Darren Appleton.
