 | THE MIDDLE EAST RISES ON THE WORLD STAGE |
2016 WPA World 9-Ball Championships Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation Al-Arabi Sports Club Al Shaab Street Doha Qatar www.qbsf.qa - facebook - live score www.alarabi.qa www.wpa-pool.com - Twitter - facebook
Friday 29 July - Thursday 4 August 2016
All photography courtesy of ©Bo Bader - used by Pro9 with express permission Click the image to view the full size photograph (use "back" to return here) Saudi Arabia's Abdul Rahman Al Amar is part of wave of young Middle Eastern players notching victories on Day 1 at the World 9-ball Championship
The moments before the first rack on the first day of the World 9-ball Championship are never easy, even for the best of players. The tables and conditions are new and untested. Players know they only have to win two race-to-9matches to qualify for the final 64, but things in pool can easily go array as you may come out flat, or the balls might conspire against you. Even the top players realize that just because you haven’t heard of the guy you’re paired against, it doesn’t mean you’re going to waltz into the money rounds.
Indeed while 15 of the WPA’s top 20 players won their opening matches on day 1 in Doha, several big names suffered setbacks, suddenly finding themselves on the one loss side of their groups, and one more loss from unceremoniously exiting pool’s biggest stage.
After 8 hours of pool at its highest level at the Al Arabi sports club, several things stand out loud and clear. The sport of pool has never seen this many highly skilled players from so many different countries. This fact, combined with the new rule this year of racking the balls with the 9-ball on the spot instead of the 1-ball, thereby toughening up the opening break shot, means that the 2016 World 9-ball championship will surely see the world crown contested at the highest level we have ever witnessed.
All 128 players saw action in the double elimination group stages today and, as usual, it seems the Taiwanese are ready to contend yet again. Defending champion Ko Pin Yi had a layup of a match to get things started as he cruised to a 9-1 win over Algeria’s Mohamed Elraousti. As the day progressed, the Taiwanese kept notching up impressive wins, going 8 out of 10; Chang Jun Lin, Chu Hong Ming, Ko Ping Chung(Pin Yi’s younger brother), Hsieh Chia Chen, Li Wen Lo, Wu Kun Lin and Cheng Yu Husan all saw victory. Only Chang Yu Lung and veteran Yang Chin Shun lost.
Many people believe that a European will be standing in the winner’s circle next Thursday because the Europeans have been playing with the 9-ball on the spot on the Euro tour for years, and already understand this breaks shot’s unique complexities. One player in particular with good odds is 2014 World 9-ball Champion Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, who didn’t face a difficult task as he waltzed past Qatar’s Abdul Latif Al Fawal, 9-3. It’s rumored that the Dutchman has put in 1000’s of hours perfecting the break shot and has even unlocked a certain secret about its configuration.
Other notable Europeans notching victories today include two time World 9-ball Champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, Greece’s Nikos Ekonomopoulos, Austria’s Albin Ouscan, and 2012 World 9-ball champion Darren Appleton.

Patrick Hofmann (GER), Sanjin Pehlivanovic (BIH) and Kristina Tkach (RUS) took the crowns in 8-ball at the Dynamic Billard European Championships Youth in Tirana, Albania.
Daniel Maciol (POL) started the match with a break and run against his opponent Patrick Hofmann. But that did not impress Hofmann too much. He answered straight away with a break and run himself. Rack three saw Maciol coming off dry which brought Hofmann to the table. The German cleared the table, added another clearance and went ahead 3:1. In rack five, Maciol again could not get any ball on his break shot. That „mistake“ resulted in Hofmann snatching another two racks off Maciol, taking a 5:1 lead in the match.

In the Under 19’s division of the Dynamic Billard European Championships Youth in Tirana, Albania, Team Poland just won 2:1 over Team Czech Republic.
Day five of the Championships started with two rounds of team competition, before the event switches back into 8-ball mode. One team match was the encounter between Team Poland and Team Czech Republic. The Polish team was definitely favored, having won so many medals in the past and being also one of the most successful teams in the medal rankings for some years now. But as we have witnessed so often already during this week, sometimes things don’t quite turn out as expected beforehand. What was expected to be a clear affair for the Polish turned into a thriller with the better end for team Poland. Kamila Szaszor took first blood over Petr Brancusky in 10-ball with 7:2. The Polish seemed to be on track. But Ladislav Hajsman gave Krystian Cwikla a fierce battle in 9-ball and after 14 racks, the score was 7:7 in a race to eight. It was Cwikla’s break shot coming up. He pocketed the 2-ball and had a good shot at the 1-ball. The layout was nice and easy. He continued shooting balls until he got to the 8-ball. He had a perfect position for it and everything looked like the match was in the bag for him. But Cwikla missed the 8-ball in the corner pocket. It hung over the pocket and brought Hajsman back into the table. The Czech player used his chance and pocketed the 8-ball and the 9-ball to win his match with 8:7 over Cwikla and turn the score in the team match to 1:1. Now the 8-ball had to decide. Daniel Maciol was encountering Calvin Washburn. Maciol was better than Wash burn and won the 8-ball quite comfortably with 7:4. This brought the 2:1 victory to Team Poland but it was anything else but a walk in the park for the favorites.

 | 2016 WORLD 9-BALL ALL SET TO KICK OFF IN QATAR |
2016 WPA World 9-Ball Championships Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation Al-Arabi Sports Club Al Shaab Street Doha Qatar www.qbsf.qa - facebook www.alarabi.qa www.wpa-pool.com - Twitter - facebook
Friday 29 July - Thursday 4 August 2016
All photography courtesy of ©Richard Walker - used by Pro9 with express permission Click the image to view the full size photograph (use "back" to return here) Expect plenty of drama and excitement as 128 of pool's best vie for the world title on the 25th anniversary of pool's biggest event.
The burning hot desert kingdom of Qatar is about to be set ablaze in sporting terms as the 25th edition of the WPA World 9-ball Championship breaks off July 30 at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha.
This will be the seventh straight year that the tiny Gulf country, through the government sanctioned Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation(QBSF), has put its full backing behind the sport of pool’s biggest and most important event. Once again 128 players from over 40 countries will clash to see who will be crowned the king of 9-ball pool.
In 24 previous editions dating back to 1990, the World 9-ball Championship has always provided the kind of nerve rattling drama that has captured the imagination of fans around the globe. It’s that kind of pressure cooker atmosphere that has always weeded out the pretenders to pool’s ultimate crown, and produced a veritable pantheon of pool greats.
On this silver anniversary of pool’s most anticipated event, we can take a moment to look back. A look down the list of past World 9-ball champions reads exactly like a who’s who of the sport. Multiple winners include the legendary Earl Strickland(1990, ’91, ’02), Johnny Archer(’92, ’97), Taiwan’s Fong Pang Chao(’93, 2000), and Thorsten Hohmann(2003, ’13).
Germany’s Ralf Souquet(’96) and Oliver Ortmann(’95), Finland’s Mika Immonen(’01), the Netherlands Niels Feijen(’14), the Philippines Alex Pagulayan(’04), Ronnie Alcano(’06), and Francisco Bustamante(’10) all cemented their status as giants of the game by winning the World 9-ball Championship.
The World 9-ball Championship is the event where Japan has often displayed it’s incredible pool talent with winners Takeshi Okumura (1994), Kunihiko Takahashi(1998 ) and Yukio Akagariyama(2011.)
And then there’s the incredible victories that have been etched into the minds of pool fans for all time; the Philippines Efren Reyes winning in 1999 and setting off a pool revolution in his home country; Taiwan’s Wu Chia Ching, only 16 years old, finding the courage to take 5 straight racks to win a seemingly impossible title(’05); England’s Daryl Peach somehow fending off an entire country in 2007, capturing glory in the Philippines against Filipino Roberto Gomez; England’s Darren Appleton blowing a seemingly insurmountable lead to China’s Li Heiwen, only to find the will to win a pressure packed one rack decider to win his first World 9-ball crown (2012.)

The 10-ball titles at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Tirana, Albania, have been decided. Kristina Tkach (RUS) defended her title, Maksim Dudanets (RUS) and Sanjin Pehlivanovic (BIH) claimed it in their respective division.
In the Under 17’s, Wiktor Zielinski (POL) encountered Sanjin Pehlivanovic (BIH) in the final match. They have already met in the semi-final of the straight pool division and Pehlivanovic still had a score to settle since Zielinski defeated him then and went on to win the Gold Medal. Both contestants were a bit nervous in the early stage of the match which resulted in several missed ball and easy mistakes. It looked like Pehlivanovic would get his revenge. He was leading 4:2 after six racks played. Then Zielinski pulled back one rack, went for his time-out and pulled another rack off Pehlivanovic to tie the match at 4:4. The heat was on in the final. Both players really wanted that title and one could feel the pressure on both of them.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF JP PARMENTIER & CUESPORTS INTERNATIONAL Van Boening claims second US 10-Ball Championship title Report by Mary Coffman - CueSports International
Shane Van Boening of South Dakota did what he did best Thursday at the US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino — break with consistency; pocket balls with deadly accuracy; and place the cue ball with precision. And so Van Boening was able to pocket a second US Open 10-Ball Championship, and the $10,000 prize that accompanied a silver cup. Van Boening’s tournament started strong, with wins over Chad Sholders, 10-4; Tommy Tokoph, 10-7; Georgi Georgiev, 10-5; Amar Kang, 10-6, and Sky Woodward, 10-5, before being bested by runner-up Rodney Morris in the hot seat match, 10-7. Morris forced Van Boening to the loser’s side of the bracket where he beat Canadian John Morra 10-6, to ensure himself a spot in the finals and another shot at Morris. Morris’ path to the hot seat included wins over Mitch Ellerman, Brandon Shuff, Vilmos Foldes, Jason Klatt and Morra. The finals match remained close until the score was tied at eight games each, when Van Boening broke and ran the rack to move ahead in the single race-to-13 final match. Van Boening capitalized when Morris made mistakes and played solidly to capture every game until he pocketed the final 10 ball and the championship title.

Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. No big upsets in Tirana so far
Day One of the Dynamic Billard European Championships ended without bigger upsets or unexpected results in the straight pool discipline.
In the Under 19 division, Maksim Dudanets (RUS) lived up to the expectations and won his match in the round of the last 16 players uncontested against Federico Amendola (ITA) with 100:31. Dudanets will play the quarterfinal tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time.
Another hot tip for the title is Daniel Maciol (POL). He defeated Timofey Sereda (BLR) 100:85 in the round of the last 32 players and then won against Yannis Bartscher (SUI) 100:58 to book his seat in the quarterfinal. Probably the toughest match in that round happened between Kamil Szaszor (POL) and Osman Sanlisoy (TNC). After a really mean struggle, Sanlisoy managed to win the match a bit surprisingly with 100:94.
