Ouschan: ‘I’m going to fight for every game’

Making his debut in the 2015 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup is Europe’s Albin Ouschan. The 25 year-old Austrian star has had a stellar 12 month period that saw him take the silver medal at the WPA World 9 Ball Championship in June 2014 and then bagging the China Open title in July this year.

Ouschan had come close to making the Mosconi Cup team in 2012 when he lost out to Nikos Ekonomopoulos in a three-man play off that also included Oliver Ortmann. More recently Ouschan competed in a team event in Asia and counted Darren Appleton and Shane Van Boening among his team mates.

With a week to go until the big break off at the Tropicana, Ouschan is ready to go; “I'm really excited because it is everybody’s dream to play the Mosconi Cup and I had to fight very hard to finally get in. Three years ago I was very disappointed because I played very good the whole year but at the qualification the luck was not on my side. I was very sad and it was hard for me to come back after that loss.”

Steve Davis: 2002: ‘One of the best moments of my career’

He is best known around the world as one of snooker’s greatest ever players, but Steve Davis also has quite a history with the Mosconi Cup.

Having played in each of the first 11 Mosconi Cups from 1994, ‘The Nugget’ was a stalwart of the early years of pool’s greatest competition and describes his first victory as “one of the highlights of my career – regardless that it wasn’t even my career.”

Unlike in recent times, Team USA dominated the first decade of the Mosconi Cup. Having lost the inaugural event, Europe hit back in 1995 with a 16-15 victory in Romford. But they had to wait seven years to lift the famous trophy again. In 2002 they were 12-9 winners, responding in style to the 12-1 humiliation dished out by an all-star American side in which a 25-year-old Corey Deuel was the MVP.

The 2002 Mosconi Cup victory is one of Davis’ proudest moments, and something he has reflected on in his autobiography Interesting, which was published earlier this year.

He wrote: “For the first two years of the Mosconi Cup a mixture of Alex Higgins, Jimmy White, Allison Fisher and me represented Europe (even though we were by no means the cutting edge of European pool) and came up against the best players from the States (or so we thought!). We shared the spoils.

Wildman sets the standard at T9B Grand Finals for second year running

Saturday 28th August saw the Total9Ball Grand Finals take place at the Raging Ball Venue in St Albans. 23 players competed in what was set to be a brilliant event with over £500 in sponsorship added by Total9ball on top of the players entry fees. This meant the prize money for this one day finale was as follows:

Winner £500
Runner Up £250
Semi Finals £125
Quarter Finals £60

The event was run to the standard Amateur Series format of 2x double chance. Each player was therefore guaranteed two knockout matches. The first side of the draw was seeded with the top eight ranked players receiving a bye into round two. The second side of the draw was drawn at random live at the venue before a ball was hit. Total9ball also guaranteed the break-dish at this event at a minimum of £300. With so much to play for there was an incredible buzz in the venue with all players looking to end on a high and become T9B Grand Final Champion 2015.

Dinsmore retains top spot, as Lee and Lester win maiden titles

The curtain came down on another BWPPA season over the weekend of the 14/15 November 2015, with the Predator Cues British Wheelchair 9-ball Championship, which was held at the Wheelchair Cue sports Academy at Stoke Mandeville near Aylesbury.

Going into the event, only Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore and Merseyside’s Tony Southern could end the season as the UK’s number 1 wheelchair pool player. Southern knew only a place in the main event final, and a slip up from Dinsmore would see him reach top spot in the rankings.

Van den Berg: ‘I’m even hungrier for a win’

This December Holland’s Nick van den Berg will be lining up for his seventh appearance for Team Europe at the Tropicana in a Mosconi Cup career that has lasted 14 years to date. The 35 year-old Dutchman has been on the losing side just once and brings plenty to the table as Europe eye up their sixth win in a row.

Following an absence of three years, van den Berg has battled hard to reclaim a spot in the team; “Every year I try so hard to get points and qualify for the Mosconi Cup. The last two years I felt I missed out by a hair so I had to take some pressure off and not focus too much on trying to qualify. But in the end I was one of the five or six players still in the race for the 3rd automatic spot so the pressure was back on again! I played an OK US Open finishing 25th but Karl came in second and he overtook me on the ranking. Of course I was very disappointed but fair play to him.”

However, with van den Berg finishing up fourth in the Combined Rankings, it was enough to tip the balance in his favour for a wildcard.

Mark Gray wins Dynamic Billard Treviso Open

With an absolutely justified 9:3 victory over Alexander Kazakis (GRE), Mark Gray (GBR) took the title at the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2015.

The final match was decided in the first racks already. While Gray continued his performance and played rock solid, Kazakis committed some unforced errors which completely brought him off track. He missed several easy shots in the beginning and could not prevent Gray from capitalizing from it. In rack two, Kazakis missed an easy 6-ball which was a straight shot in the corner pocket. Then in rack four and five, Kazakis missed the 1-ball in both racks. The more mistakes Kazakis played the stronger Gray grew throughout the match. Logically, Kazakis had no chances to win the match and the final result of 9:3 in favor of Gray is absolutely justified. „I am absolutely amazed to win this tournament wit 180 entries“, stated Gray after the match“.

Harris too good as he books his space at The T9B Champion Of Champions Event

Bob Harris bagged himself one of the final invites to the T9B Champion Of Champions event held at St Albans Raging Bull (New club name same location) venue in Hertfordshire on Saturday 5th December. T9B event winners have been getting invites to the main event of the season all year and we now have our 16 qualifiers. This last chance saloon qualifier held last Saturday 14th (November) as a last minute addition event added to the already very busy T9B schedule of events. As Chris Seville and Tom Staveley were repeat event winners earlier in the season there were two spaces on offer at this qualifier. Two separate tournaments were organised and run on the same date. The winner of the first event would become ineligible for event two. In total 14 players attended this event which seems a low attendance but as it was a last minute event and with 14 regular players already qualified this was a pleasing attendance. The format was two random draw straight knockout events with players racing to seven racks.

Matches kicked off at 10.30am with each first round match being allocated a table. Chris Parker raced to a 7v2 victory against Wayne Rooke, this was the first result back of the day. Bob Harris was one of the lucky players who received a bye through to the Quarter Finals but his day didn’t start the way he had surely planned as Matt Hawthorne played a solid match winning 7v3. Total9ball’s very own Mark Parker looked to be showing some good form as he began with an impressive 7v2 against one of the pre tournament favourites Mark Foster. Mikko Tuomi produced a quality 7v4 result against Mark Williams while Alan Bell battled hard to defeat Mark Newell 7v5.

SHOTGUN SHOOTS TO #1 SPOT AND BRITISH GRAND PRIX TITLE

Osborne was eager to get off to a good start in this tournament, knowing that a good showing would go a long way to helping him secure the end of season #1 ranked status. Michael Beeston was the first to fall to Osborne’s sword, losing 9 racks to 4 and setting Osborne up to face Bob Harris in the next round. A 9-5 victory followed for Osborne as he made his way through to the winners qualifier round. Here he was to face the ever improving Mark Parker, but Parker’s best efforts didn’t quite cut it here. Osborne won through to the straight knockout last 16 with another 9-5 win. His opposition didn’t get any easier here, with Keighley’s Arfan Dad drawn to face him for a place in the quarters. Whilst the match went the distance, it was Osborne who was on the right end of the 9-8 scoreline and into the last 8 he went. Mark Gray, one of the tour’s most decorated players, was next to try and stop Osborne. He came agonisingly close but, once again, Osborne won a deciding rack thriller 9-8 to go through to the semi finals. Chris Cowie, returning to the tour after a long absence, was attempting to shock the field and snatch the British Grand Prix title as if from nowhere. Osborne had other ideas, however, and he stepped his game up a gear to win through to the final by 9 racks to 5.
