Imran Majid finished the Special Event with four consecutive break and dishes!!!

Special Event - 10 Ball Ring Game

The six participants were Karl Boyes, Phil Burford, Gareth Esprit, Stephen Folan, Imran Majid and Tony Weafer. Each started with a £250 stake, the players take turns at the table, shooting until they miss.

In the opening round of play each player would pay £25 to the player who sank the 10-ball each time, making the key ball with £125 to the successful player each time.

First blood was surprisingly drawn by the unfancied underdog of the event, Tony Weafer, who made a very solid run to the nine but left himself a very long 10 ball. He held his nerve very well and sank the ten confidently and continued to run a few balls after his break.

Click on "Read More..." for the details.

Burford, Majid, Folan and Esprit took the next racks, but it was Burford who opened a lead by being the first player to win two racks!

Spectators were beginning to hear the alarm bells for Boyes as he still hadn't taken his first win and his stake was depleting each round.

Majid took the 7th, and then the stake for each player raised to £50 each time, only for Burford to take yet another, increasing his lead still further, followed by Esprit taking his second.

Finally, at rack 10, Boyes earned his first pay-day, and then tried to make the most of it by giving the pack a thunderous smack with his Predator BK.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 balls dropped on his enormous break, and then Boyes' jaw dropped too, along with the sixth ball to fall - the white!!!

Stephen Folan became the first player to win a rack and then add a brace of break and dishes on the end, winning racks 11, 12 and 13 only for Majid to end his reign by taking the 14th.

Majid's victory spelled doom for the two players who had only had single wins, Boyes and Weafer.

The players had agreed to a redraw every seven racks and now they took time for a break too, here's how the money looked at this stage:

£625 Folan
£325 Burford
£325 Majid
£225 Esprit
£OUT Boyes
£OUT Weafer

From this point onwards it was "The Gareth and Imran Show" as Gareth added two back-to-back wins at this point, dishing up the second from the break, and cashing in too, taking his cash balance from lowest to highest in one fell swoop!

Imran took the next two in similar fashion and someone in the audience was heard to utter the rather prophetic line, "He just doesn't make any mistakes."

Gareth took the 19th rack but then Imran stepped up a gear, clearing the 20th rack, and then throwing together an incredible quartet of break and dish... Running each rack meticulously, and preventing any of the other players a chance to come to the table.

Needless to say this had a devastating effect on the other player's bank balances, as first Burford was eliminated after rack 21, shortly followed by Folan's exit after rack 24.

"I had my chances and I blew it", said Folan as he walked away from the arena, leaving Majid to get off to another good start in rack 25... He didn't manage to "get out" but still took the rack.

At the start of rack 26 with the stakes at £100 a throw, Imran had £1425 in his account and Gareth was "all-in" with the remaining £75 balance and nothing less than a miracle would help now, and even though Imran accidentally miscued on the four ball, it didn't leave a sufficient opportunity for Gareth to finish the rack, and Imran still managed to win the rack, and the match!

Imran won an incredible £1,500 and a very nice commemorative shirt with gold lettering supplied by 8n9.com, shirt sponsors of the weekend.

THE SPEED POOL

Speed Pool champions congratulate each other after the final

Lee Rigby handles the heat at turbo-charged fun event in Barnsley

Two tables side by side with all fifteen balls set up, an adjudicator counts down, 3... 2... 1... Goooooooooo, and both players break hard and then start running around their tables simultaneously potting all the balls as quickly as they can. The only rules are the balls need to stop rolling before the next shot can be played, and the 8 ball must sink last!

It was hilarious watching this, a great fun event but still played very competitively by the participants... It came down to Lee Rigby versus Gareth Steele in the final but after a missed shot by Steele it was apparent that Rigby was going to win with a more and more commanding lead.

Imran Majid beats WPC Bronze Medalist Karl Boyes in a thrilling final in Barnsley

I'd not been to the Barnsley club before, but it really is a treasure, quite simply the best Rileys out there, and a brilliant venue for what turned out to be a fantastic tournament, with it's "Special Event" 10-ball Ring Game, the fun Speed Pool competition, as well as the main event.
