Colchester ‘Dazzled’
Another weekend of fantastic 9 ball was rounded off with a triumphant Daryl Peach taking home the glory and the big money as he overcame good friend and travelling partner Andy Worthington by eleven racks to ten at the BPPPA Colchester Open final, held at Riley’s Colchester over Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May. Although close, the final never really sent sparks flying across the baize owing certainly to the two players knowing each other so well, but predominantly because of both putting in so much effort to reach the final itself. At hill-hill, Blackpool’s Peach broke off and as the balls were preparing to rest it looked as though Worthington was to be given a clear chance for the title, until a kindly bump from the red 3 saw the 7ball drop into the side. The table had proved a difficult one to make balls from the break on, so when the 7 did find a hole – and Peach let out a huge sigh of relief and a smile, the chuckle from the spectators was more than justified. ‘The Dazzler’ made no mistakes in running-out the remaining balls to lift his third title on English soil for the season. “I had that good feeling when Sunday arrived”, said Peach, “I get a feeling in every single tournament I play regarding whether it’s my day or not, I felt it was my day in Colchester and it was”.

The Roman town of Colchester was treated to not only the cream of Great Britain’s 9 ball talent but also our mainland European compatriots. In his first appearance on the British Main Tour, Dutch star Guilliano Smit unfortunately fell at the last 16 stage to Damian Overton 9-4. Making the journey from Belgium were Mario Eckert, Serge Das, Pascal Budo, Stephen Lammens and Serge Delhaye accompanied by their Dutch National Coach Johan Ruysink, hoping to recreate his previous success story of honing the talent of Niels Feijen, Alex Lely and Nick van den Berg. Of the five Belgians it was Stephen Lammens that made the biggest impression on the event, the majority of the talk surrounded Lammens and compliments were made on his cueing, composure and confidence and for a very good reason too – Lammens is only fourteen years old and seemingly a sure-fire prospect on the big stage for the future. It was the eventual champion Peach that halted the youngster’s progress at the last 16 stage and in fine fashion, running a seven-pack in his 9 – 1 victory. Peach said of the Belgian, “For a fourteen year old, he plays like a seasoned campaigner. I was lucky enough to get my break going against him but I saw his earlier matches and all I can say is that I’m very impressed. With Johan coaching him he’s in great hands.”
Even with the success of young Master Lammens, the biggest story in Colchester was the long overdue appearance of the real Andy Worthington. After a fantastic season on the EPBF EuroTour which has seen him qualify for this year’s World Pool Championships, Worthington finally produced the goods at home. It is his qualification to the ‘Worlds’ that he attributes his performance in Colchester, “It’s given me the confidence to go out and actually enjoy myself which is exactly what I did this weekend. I’m really pleased.” Other than Peach in the final, Bradley Parker was the only man to get the better of Worthington, winning 9 – 6 on the winners side of the draw on day one. Worthington went on to see off the challenge of BPPPA Junior Ollie Waters 7 – 4 to qualify for the straight knockout last 32 stage. Day two started in the best possible way for Worthington, a 9 – 0 pummelling of the confident Joe Sims was followed by a 9 – 5 win over Yorkshire 8 ball convert Lee Rigby. Worthington ended his quarter final hoodoo by producing his ‘A’ game at the right time, seeing off none other than BPPPA ranked number one Imran Majid, appearing in his first event since becoming the first ever British player to win a prestigious EuroTour title. Visibly pumped up after that win, Worthington retained his composure to out-play Tommy Donlon, looking for a record-breaking fourth consecutive BPPPA title, in the semis by 9 racks to 4. Worthington’s focus was tremendous and was undoubtedly the key to his success in Colchester – under-achiever no longer maybe?
‘The Dazzler’ qualified for Day two in a relative heartbeat, seeing off Neil Bodger 9 – 1 and Jack Triggs 9 – 3 – easy when you know how I guess. It was Victoria’s notorious character So Shaw that pushed Peach the hardest up until the final. Shaw lead 7 – 4 in the quarter final match up but Peach as always seemed to have that reserve of talent to edge out the contender, 9 – 7 in this case. Peach’s other victories came against an impressive Neil Margosian 9 – 6 in the last 32 and in the semi final Mark Gray, looking like he’s hitting close to form again. Even Peach’s fiercest rivals suggest he is an immeasurable asset to our sport
