A jubilant David Alcaide celebrates his momentus win in Cambridge

DAVID ALCAIDE WINS 2007 GRAND MASTERS 8 BALL OPEN!

Superlatives fail me when I try to describe the simply astounding level of pool on display from the finalists in the 2007 Grand Masters 8 Ball Open,

Spaniard David Alcaide and British Imran Majid traded games until the final decisive set in the best final I have EVER SEEN!

In hindsight, it would appear that it was clear that Malaga man Alcaide had this tournament sewn up from the start, although it was inconceivable that he could possibly maintain the awesome level of play throughout the entire three days!

Photos and mini podcasts at 1am!

"Read More..." for the latest results.

Grand Masters player Raj Hundal looking sharp at Mickey Flynns, Cambridge.

ALCAIDE! ALCAIDE! ALCAIDE!!!

Spanish Master David Alcaide goes from strength to strength in the event as he improves on his 10 rack run yesterday with an even better feat today in his Quarter Final match with Daryl Peach.

Malaga resident Alcaide beat Great Britain's number one 8 Ball supremo Daryl Peach in straight sets - including a continuous nine rack run, he then allowed Peach a rack, then Alcaide ran another six racks.

David modestly said he was "muy contento" with his performance!

Tension increases and nerves start to fray as players sense the money!

Cues are being whacked on the tables after the omnipresent scratch on the hill-hill break in the first stage of the money rounds here in the "up-scale" Mickey Flynns American Pool club in Cambridgeshire, England.

"Petulant Petroni" (Fabio) virtually had to be restrained in his match with "Crusher Carl" Morris after tempers boiled over in their Last 32 match yesterday - apparently an old feud returning to haunt their game in the pressure fuelled atmosphere at the prestigeous Grand Masters.

The crowd's are fascinated by the tantrums and tension at The Grand Masters.

"Annoyed Nick" (van den Berg) slapped his cue on the table furiously after scratching on what could have been the deciding rack, set and match against his rather cooler opponent "Calm Karl" (Boyes),

Marcus Chamat in the early stages of The 2007 Grand Masters event..

"Mouthy Marcus" (Chamat) has been very vocal about his displeasure at his own game.

"Pleased as Punch Peach" (Daryl) was over the moon with his victory over his arch-rival Goran Mladenovic from Serbia. This was not the first match to have needed the services of EPBF qualified official Grand Masters referee, Andy Watts, as the "sharking" reached a testosterone fueled fever pitch.

Earning his money at this event, Watts was instructed by Tournament Director, Mark Mills, to "put the shot clock on" the remainder of the match.

Something tells me the referee is going to be busy at this event!!!

Drago first to qualify for Quarter Final stage in Cambridge!

In a ruthless "Tornado-like" style and speed that we've grown to love, fear and respect, Malta's Tony Drago has entered the Quarter Final stage of this prestigeous £16,000 prize fund tournament in England, almost certainly several hours ahead of the other players expected finish, even though they all started at the same time.

Malta's Tony "The Tornado" Drago is living up to his name.

It took the super-fast snooker star a mere hour and a half to destroy one of Britain's finest former "English Pool" players in the Best of Five Sets format that the players are learning to love and hate.

Love - because the races are long and the player's feel they get a real chance to settle and that the better player will prevail and win.

Hate - well probably not actually, but the format takes a gruelling toll on the player's ability to concentrate for long lengths at a time, and also the physical stamina required to compete for a potential 12 or more hours in a single day, as the players are only permitted a ten minute break after each second set!!!

Could you handle it?

Alcaide Runs 8 Racks and Out!

Spaniard David Alcaide is the first player to run a set of 8 racks from the lag - and then ran another two racks after winning the lag for the next set!

Spanish hotshot David Alcaide is taking this tournament by storm.

Jonni Fulcher (Alcaide's opponent) gave the news to me as I checked scores on my regular hourly patrol.

Immonen Out

The highlight of the afternoon's matches was the battle between the Nordic duo, former World 9 Ball Champion Mika Immonen from Finland, and Sweden's hottest pool property, Marcus Chamat.

It turned into a very one sided affair as Chamat won convincingly in three straight sets, leaving a disconsolate Immonon practicing some shots at the table afterwards.

Updates on the hour, every hour!

The Grand Masters is underway and we are reporting LIVE - every hour, on the hour, for the full three days, with complete rack, set and match scores.

Surprises already at the Grand Masters as Scotland's Jayson Shaw is a "no-show" and forfeits his match automatically to Imran Majid. Jason apparently had transport problems and unfortunately forfeits his entry fee as well as the match.

Semi Finalist Rico Diks from Holland is accompanied by his father.
