Rasson Scottish 9 Ball Series - Event 2 Report

The Rasson Scottish 9 Ball Series resumed on Sunday 27th March for event 2 at McGoldricks Pool and Sports Bar in Rutherglen. 42 players took to the tables from the original field of 48.

The early stages saw predominantly smooth progress for the more fancied contenders, the most notable upset being the exit of top 8 baller Scott Gillespie at the hands of John Chapman in round 2.

From a Scottish perspective it was a welcome return to competitive action for Edinburgh’s Chris Fraser with a run to the quarter finals, however his progress was halted by a clinical display from Adam Smith.

Darren Murray edged a hill/hill battle with John Chapman to take his place in the semi final and keep hopes of a Scottish event winner alive.

Onto the semi finals we went, and Darren Murray wasn’t satisfied with just being the only Scot left in the tournament as he fought his way past Adam Smith 8-6.

His opponent would be either Chris Melling or Elliot Sanderson who contested a high quality affair. By this stage of the day though Melling appeared to be getting stronger than he had shown in the early rounds, and he started the better of the two opening up a healthy lead. Sanderson dug in well to get it back to 7-4 behind, but the comeback was not to be as Melling secured his place in the final with an 8-4 scoreline.

In the final Melling came flying out of the blocks to race into a 5-0 lead. The power potting game he is known for combined with experience and knowledge was proving too much for his Glaswegian opponent.

Although there was no give up in Murray who fought hard to stay in the contest, but it was Melling who would go on to take down the event with an 8-4 win.
