Tommy Donlon - Winner of the BPPPA Northampton Open.

THREE COURSE DISHER

The Tommy Donlon national pool parade marched through Rileys Northampton this weekend with yet another showing of his undoubted class and experience. In an eventful and somewhat controversial final match, Donlon overcame current World Pool Masters Champion, Raj Hundal by eleven racks to five to take the BPPPA Northampton Open crown and over a thousand pounds in prize money. The match was standing at 8 – 5 to Donlon, and the Irishman in play, when reaching over an 8 ball for a pot on the 1, Hundal stopped the play to claim he spotted Donlon’s shirt touch the impeding ball. After a lengthy and possibly heated discussion, Tournament Director Ted Bristow was called upon to make a decision. In the eyes of the rules, the correct decision was made as Donlon stepped back to the table and cleared. This lone incident though did nothing to sour what was a tournament of great pool, the Champion agreed, “This has been an event full of quality. Before the final I was really enjoying it, I had some good matches particularly with Andy Worthington and Dave McCarthy so I just hope it’s remembered for the right reasons”. Donlon’s triumph in Northampton should be remembered for him equalling a record of three BPPPA titles in succession; a record ironically set by Raj Hundal when he won the Wolverhampton, Darlington and Croydon Opens at the back end of 2004.

Donlon’s eventual achievement must have looked a million miles away when he was sitting in his seat at 6 – 4 down in a race to 7 match; not only in the one-loss side of the draw where one more rack to his opponent would have seen him out of the comp on Day One; not only at one-thirty in the morning – but his opponent was world-class cueist Darren Appleton. Donlon managed to claw back to 6 – 6 and then pounce on a failed safety attempt by Appleton to take the match. After an 8 – 4 victory over Lynette Horsburgh, it was the talented and usually entertaining Martinho Correia that curbed Donlon’s attacking instincts and took a 9 – 6 success with him to the last 32 stage. Whilst Donlon was battling for qualification, Hundal’s short-story for the Saturday read Hundal 8 v 4 David Hood, Hundal 9 v 5 Craig Seeney. On TV or up close, Hundal’s ability to spin the cueball with the most delicate of grips is a joy, maybe not for Hood or Seeney but both should take heart in being notable improvements in recent months. The tale of Day One cannot be told without the name Mike Rogers being mentioned. Rogers gave an absolute master-class in his 8 – 0 drubbing of the experienced Kevin Brown, Rogers remained professionally poker-faced throughout but a self-satisfied smirk could’ve been forgiven for such a performance.

Day Two was graced with past and present World Championship, Mosconi Cup, European Championship and English 8 Ball stars in the highest quantity to date – even with Darren Appleton’s early exit. Donlon’s path lead him past Andy Worthington 9 – 6 and Dave McCarthy 9 – 8, ranked number 5 and 15 in Britain respectively. English 8 Ball World Cup Champion Karl Boyes was seen off 9 – 7 in the quarter finals before Scotland’s Michael Valentine took Donlon to another nail-biting final rack victory 9 – 8. Raj Hundal’s closest encounter came in the quarter finals against Wigan’s 17 year old former snooker starlet Mathew Lawrenson. ‘The Hitman’ took the match 9 – 8 but Lawrenson should be remain upbeat at coming so close to a semi final berth as he will be competing for his first 9 Ball title this coming Saturday (15th April) at the BPPPA Regional Junior Open Championship in St Albans. Hundal’s other victories came against Martin Chapman and Scott Higgins, both 9 – 3, and Damian Overton in the semi final 9 – 7. Overton, having another successful event, ended the run of the highly respected Jonathan Mathers. Mathers not only qualified via the winners half of the draw but also defeated Daryl Peach who was fresh from his Bronze Medal performance at the EPBF European Championships in Germany, 9 – 1 in the last 16 stage. This fierce competitor should now start to subscribe to the popular belief that he’s a match for anyone on his day after his success in Northampton.

Whether or not Tommy Donlon’s shirt touched an 8 Ball in the final is both impossible to know or indeed discuss but Hundal will be facing charges of unsportsmanlike conduct and dissent and for being disrespectful to a Tournament Official. Tournament Director Ted Bristow announced during the event that he would be submitting a report to the BPPPA Disciplinary Committee. What is very possible and very relevant is Donlon’s reaction to the incident - it somehow pushed him harder for the record equalling win he wanted; “riled” was the word he used to describe his mindset. At this moment, Donlon cannot be out-potted or out-thought on the big occasion. Is he looking good for four?
