Symons Too Good as he adds The T9B UK Championships to his List of Honours

The Total9ball UK Amateur 10 Ball Championships took place at St Albans Hurricane Room on Sunday 10th August. 28 players battled for the title of UK 10ball Champion, the prize money and the simply stunning glass globe trophies. As always T9B used a format that guaranteed players a minimum of two matches for their entry fee. The format this time would be 10ball, winner breaks, double elimination to the last 16 players, 8 winners were then randomly drawn against the eight one loss players. Prize money began at the Quarter Final stage but who would be the player to hit form at this event???

Total9ball again assembled a very strong field with some of the best amateur players the UK has to offer including... Courtney Symons, Dave Evans, Fabio Severo, Mark Parker, Phil Wildman, Richard Twomey, Tom Staveley and Tony Burton to name a few.

Matches kicked off just before 10.30am after the draw was completed by Ashik Nathwani. Courtney Symons normally so strong at T9B events was the first eliminated player at the previous event so a good start was important for him to begin to rebuild some winning confidence, a 7v2 win against Dave Henderson done the trick as Courtney looked focused for the job ahead.

Phil Wildman's day began with a potentially tricky contest with T9B new player Tashunka Schultz. Phil gave a one rack handicap in this match and the game was close up until 3v3, as this stage Tashunka scratched to trail 3v4 and never really came back from it as Phil powered on to victory 7v4. Four of the first round matches ended up as nail biting hill-hill games with Lionel Brown (v Rich Gormley), Michael Llewellyn (v Dave Barley) Fabio Severo (v Darian George) and Richard Twomey (v Mark Parker) advancing.

After the first round of matches the break-dish roll up took centre stages. The pot is now hitting dizzy heights of wealth as it now contains £410, so yesterday each ball was valued at £35 with a £60 bonus for the ten ball clearance. T9B have adjusted the rules of this event slightly as per player feedback. Now a Player is drawn if he doesn’t collect any money a second player is drawn with the stakes lowered to £5 per ball and a £50 bonus for the clearance. So who would be today’s lucky player? Dave Evans was the answer… Dave stepped up to the challenge as all players surrounded the table. Dave hit a clean break sinking two balls and landing nicely on the one ball. £70 was announced, Dave in nice position on the one ball decided to continue but unfortunately missed. As mentioned earlier Under new T9B rules if a player doesn’t cash on the break dish a second player gets the opportunity. The players drawn was Dave Evans, that’s right Dave got a second attempt for his £10 entry. Now while you maybe thinking it was Dave's lucky day, that would soon change as he scratched off the break in the centre pocket. The break dish pot now rolls over to Amateur Series Event 8 held at St Albans on the 3oth August.

On to round two of the winners bracket, the winners of these matches would advance as seeds into the Last 16 KO. Courtney Symons took on an in form of late Lionel Brown, unfortunately for Lionel it was Courtney who showed the better form during this match as he reported a 7v3 scoreline. Brian Cassidy was pushed all the way by Mark Hughes but had the extra needed at Hill-hill to secure his place in the last 16 7v6. It was great to see Wayne Rooke hitting the ball well again, Wayne has a lot of potential but is often distracted or more to the point distracts himself (sounds like a school report) Wayne played well as he added 7v3 to his days winning score lines against Mike Llewellyn. Phil Wildman took on Gareth Esprit, it was Phil leading all the way through the match but nearing the close found himself under pressure as Gareth lead 6v5. Phil produce the goods under the cosh and advanced 7v6. Jaspal Bamotra got the better of Del Sim 7v5 while Tony Burton pushed Paul Mcmichael to the losers bracket 7v4. Richard Twomey seemed to be getting into stroke as he defeated impressive Fabio Severo 7v3.

So who would join our 8 winners from the losers qualification round? Results are below

Gareth Esprit 7v6 Rich Gormley
Shakz Islam 7v0 Paul Mcmichael
Del Sim 7v2 Ashik Nathwani
Fabio Severo 7v1 Bartek Skonecki
Lionel Brown 7v6 Kev Cronin
Mark Hughes 7v4 Joe Granville
Dave Evans 1v0 Bye
Mike Llewellyn w/0 v Mark Parker (unfortunately Mark had to withdraw due to family issues)

So one of the 16 remaining participants would become UK Champion in just a few hours time. The last 16 draw was complete by Jaspal Bamotra and Tom Staveley. The players who reached 7 rack in this round were Dave Evans (7v5 Tom Staveley) Courtney Symons (7v2 Shakz Islam) Brian Cassidy (7v5 Del Sim) Jaspal Bamotra (7v5 Gareth Esprit) Tony Burton (7v4 Mark Hughes) Phil Wildman (7v2 Lionel Brown) Wayne Rooke (7v6 Fabio Severo) and Rich Twomey (7v4 Mike Llewellyn).

On to the the Quarter Final stages and all remaining players were now guaranteed £50 in prize money. The Quarter Final line-up was very strong with many peoples favourites for the competition still involved. Courtney Symons gained revenge against Dave Evans. Dave has got the better of Courtney the last couple of times they have played so im sure Courtney was pleased to eliminate Evans 7v3 at this event. Jaspal Bamotra seemed to have hit top gear and when in this kind of form he is a joy to watch. Well a joy to watch for everyone apart from his opponent Brian Cassidy as Jaspal would be the final player he would play at this event as Jazz was victorious 7v2. Phil Wildman's 7v4 result against OB sponsored player Tony Burton looked impressive however neither player really played well but it was Phil who advanced as he made the most of Tony's mistakes. Wayne Rooke in this round recorded result of the day as he ended Rich Twomey's quest for Uk Championship success 7v3.

The Semi Final began at around 7pm one match was close as Courntey and Jaspal went rack for rack until 5v5, Jazz created an opportunity via a good safety shot but rattled a long 7ball and as always Courtney pounced on this opportunity. Courtney with the lead again looked confident and closed out the match 7v5. On the table next door it was a completely different as Wildman cruised into the Final 7v0 against Wayne Rooke. Wayne did have chances but was unable to capitalise to the delight of Wildman who made the most of each opportunity he received.

Courtney Symons and Phil Wildman would battle it out for the title of T9B UK 10ball Champion. Symons looked in no mood to be denied as he controlled the match throughout, Wildman at times had some bad luck but it was clear that Courtney was by far the better player in the Final as he went on to win the event 7v4. Well Done Courtney Symons.

Another brilliant event completed and another tournament won by a class player. Courtney deserves all the credit he gets as he really is an animal. Mistakes are few and far between and his all round game shows no weak areas.

Thanks to St Albans Hurricane Room for playing great hosts, to Kim and Nicole for giving up there Sunday to make sure the event ran smoothly and was completed in good time and to all the players who supported this event.
