World Pool Championships Format Change Announced

Matchroom Sport can announce that there will be a change of format for all rounds of the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship.

In previous years of the event, only the preliminary group stage was played to an alternate break format. In 2006 ALL rounds will be played as alternate break instead of winner breaks.

After much discussion with the WPA as well as other interested parties, it was felt that an alternate break format throughout would give all players an even chance.

Commented a spokesperson for Matchroom Sport, “With the standard of play expected to be of the very highest caliber, it was felt that the potential for one-sided matches with one player running out rack after rack was too great.

“With alternate break, the playing field is leveled with all players receiving an equal chance. Hopefully it will mean that the best player always progresses.”

The races for the knock-out stages will stay the same: L64 – 10, L32 – 10, L16 – 11, L8 – 11, Semi-Finals – 11, The Final – 17.

The 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship features 128 players from in excess of 40 countries contesting a record $400,000 prize fund.

The event runs from 4-12 November at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila and is televised live for over 60 hours throughout Asia via the ESPN Star network and across the UK on Sky Sports.
