Feijen, Ouschan and Tähti go for Gold

Niels Feijen (NED), Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) and Jouni Tähti (FIN) conquered the Gold Medals at the 2014 Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes.

Niels Feijen did it! He defended his 9-ball title from last year and defeated the surprise star of the European Championships, Jürgen Jenisy (AUT) clearly with 9:4. He showed his dominance this year with victories over players such tough as Imran Majid (GBR) or Albin Ouschan (AUT). In seven matches, Feijen only allowed his opponents to take 20 racks off him. That is an average of less than three racks per match. Feijen played at an absolute peak performance and it will be very interesting to see whether he will be able to maintain his form for the men’s Euro-Tour which will start tomorrow morning.

"Read More..." for the details.

As in the men’s division, Jasmin Ouschan was able to defend her 9-ball European title which she had won last year. Being the defending Champion, she has proven to be too strong for this year’s field of competitors. Ouschan won her matches 7:3 over Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL), Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 7:1, Anna Mazhirina (RUS) 7:1 and Line Kjoersvik (NOR) in the final match with 7:4. Ouschan has collected two out of four possible titles in the individuals plus the Gold Medal with team Austria. What a successful EC for the Austrian superstar.

Jouni Tähti prevented the defending Champion Fred Dinsmore (IRL) from repeating his title from last year. Tähti won the final match over Dinsmore with 7:5 after a tough battle. In the semi-final matches, Dinsmore ousted Roy Kimberley (GBR) 7:2 while Tähti took care of Henrik Larsson (SWE) 7:5.

That concludes the coverage of the 2014 Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes. Play will continue tomorrow at the same location with the start of the men’s and the women’s Euro-Tour event. 165 men and 47 women are ready for more 9-ball action on the highest European level.

Can Feijen repeat it?

Defending Champion Niels Feijen (NED) is on his way to defend his title from last year in the 9-ball discipline. Today, he ended the hopes of Imran Majid (GBR) 9:2, Fabio Petroni (ITA) 9:4 and Ivica Putnik (CRO) 9:2. There was not a single match where his domination was in danger at all. He played rock solid and it will be tough for anyone to beat „The Terminator“ in this shape.

Feijen will play Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) in the quarter-final match tomorrow morning at 10:30 am local time. Stepanov had defeated Georg Hoeberl (AUT) 9:2, Roger Rasmussen (NOR) 9:2 and Chris Melling (GBR) 9:7 to book his seat for the match with Feijen. The other quarter-final matches in the men’s division will be played between Huidji See (NED) and Albin Ouschan (AUT), Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) and Ralf Souquet (GER), and Jürgen Jenisy (AUT) against Michel Bartol (CRO). Jenisy and Bartol can definitely be regarded as the dark horses in this tournament.

In the women’s division, defending Champion Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) is not less successful. She won her matches today over Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) 7:6, Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) 7:3 and faces Wesolowska’s teammate Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) in the quarter-final tomorrow morning. Czuprynska had taken the better of Veronika Hubrtova (CZE) 7:2 and Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) 7:6. Anna Mazhirina (RUS) will have to deal with young upcoming star Kristina Zlateva (BUL) who eliminated Caroline Roos (SWE) 7:4 and Darya Sirotina (RUS) 7:6 today. The other quarter-final matches will be played between Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) against Silvia Gaudino (ITA) and Tamara Peeters-Rademakers (NED) against Line Kjoersvik (NOR), last year’s runner-up.

In the wheelchair division, Fred Dinsmore (IRL) will meet Matt Duffy (GBR), Roy Kimberley (GBR) will face Emil Schranz (AUT), Kurt Deklerck (BEL) encounters Henrik Larsson (SWE) while Tony Southern (GBR) goes against Jouni Tähti (FIN). All quarter-final matches will be played at the same time, 10:30 am on Wednesday morning.

Appleton loses to Souquet in 9-Ball

In his first appearance on European soil, Darren Appleton (GBR) lost his first match to Ralf Souquet (GER) with 7:9.

It was not necessarily a lucky draw for Appleton. After having achieved so many titles abroad since he moved to the US in 2011, Appleton came back to Europe to compete in the 9-ball division of the Dynamic Billard European Championships and in the Euro-Tour which follows right after the EC. He drew Ralf Souquet in his first round match. The match was a highlight for all fans and spectators. However, Souquet controlled most of the match and was leading big time. He even went on the hill, being 8:3 up on Appleton in a race to nine. That looked like a clear victory for the German. But Appleton is known to never give up. He pulled back several racks from Souquet until the score was only 8:7 for Souquet. In the 16th rack, Souquet played a push-out which Appleton rejected and gave it back. Souquet pocketed a very difficult 1-ball but did not get position to pocket the 2-ball. He attempted a safety shot but finished up with a bad shot. Appleton had a clear shot on the 2-ball and the rack was open. To the dismay of all viewers, Appleton missed the 2-ball by a mile and also scratched with the cue ball. That brought Souquet back to the table with ball in hand and an open rack. No problem for the BCA Hall of Famer. He cleared the table and won the rack and the match with 9:7. Appleton had his chances and will get more of them on the loser’s side while Souquet continued on the winner’s side with a straight 9:4 victory over Joao Grilo (POR) which put him in the single elimination round of the last 64 players. Among others, Souquet is joined there by defending Champion Niels Feijen (NED) who had a walk-over in his first round and the smashed Nicolas Ottermann (GER) 9:1. Nick van den Berg (NED) who took the title in 8-ball last night, had a good start with a 9:2 victory over Yevgen Zlotnytskyi (UKR). But then he fell to Mariusz Skoneczny (POL) with 5:9. Van den Berg needs to take the detour over the left side of the draw now.

In the women’s division, defending Champion Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) is right on track. She defeated Alice Marcotte (nothing) with 7:2 and will now play young Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) in the winner’s qualification round. Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) who won the women’s 10-ball crown earlier last week, lost her opening match to Anna Mazhirina (RUS) with 5:7. Line Kjoersvik (NOR), last year’s runner-up and bronze medallist from the 8-ball competition yesterday, took her opponent Zrinka Antonijevic (CRO) out with 7:2 and will now face 8-ball European Champion Darya Sirotina (RUS) in the next round.

In the wheelchair division, defending Champion Fred Dinsmore (IRL) is on his way, winning clearly over Leszek Blumczynski (POL) with 7:1. In the winner’s qualification round, Dinsmore will play Daniel Luton (GBR) who defeated Tankred Volkmer (GER) 7:4 earlier today. Last year’s runner-up Tony Southern (GBR) won his match with his teammate Matt Duffy (GBR) 7:4 and now meets Henrik Larsson (SWE) in the next round tomorrow afternoon at 14:00 local time.

Play will commence tomorrow morning 10:00am local time with the 9-ball competition. All results and more info can be found on www.epconline.eu. LIVEStream can be viewed at www.kozoom.com.
