Escape's George Vetters, "Jackpot" Jayson Shaw, and T9B founder Phil Wildman

Shaw Wins Total9Ball £1,000 Jackpot!!!

Since the creation of the Double Chance 2x format by Total9ball, we have run 18 events using this unique format, and there have been many attempts made by some top class players including, Craig Osborne, Imran Majid, and Mark Gray to name a few. All have won a T9B 2x Event but haven't managed to remain undefeated throughout the whole event to scoop the Jackpot. This year Total9ball began its first ever National Series which consists of 6 double chance events spread across the country to offer more players the chance to compete in this style format and to see if they could become 'The Undefeated'

As you will be aware, Events One and Two were won by Craig Osborne. Saturday 4th May was the date for event Three to take place and it was held at the Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley, This club was previously a Rileys but has now been taken over by George Vetters the ex Rileys manager, while Barnsley has always been one of the country's top venues, it was clear to see the work George has put into the club and it was excellent for T9B to use such a good club for this event.

There was a field of 28 players which was less than expected but this wasn't going to dampen the event as it still boasted some excellent prize money. The event kicked off at 10am after the draw was completed by Dave Nelson and Chris Hall. There were some cracking matches drawn including a mouth watering match up between two 2012 European Mosconi Cup winning players, Chris Melling and Darren Appleton, this match was played on the recently re-clothed Diamond Match Table.

Chris was victorious 7v5 on this occasion and after Darren suffered a shock defeat to Simon Gardiner in the other half of the draw, one of the tournament favourites Darren Appleton was eliminated. There were also a couple of big comebacks, Courtney Symons led James Kay 7v1 only for Kay to battle back to advance into round two 8v7, while on a nearby table Sam Capper led Phil Wildman 6v1 only for Phil to reel off the next 7 racks to claim his place in round two. The hard luck draw of the day went to an on-fire Tem Dixon. Tem, from Leicester, started his event by demolishing T9B National Series Event One and Two Winner Craig Osborne 7v2, he was then set the task of beating Chris Melling, Tem seemed to be still be buzzing from his previous result as again he caused a shock 7v4 win. Tems day wasn't about to get any easier as his 3rd round match was against Jayson Shaw, Jayson was was in no mood to be slayed by the giant killer and ended Tem's awesome streak 7v1.

Jayson prior to this match with Tem had defeated another Leicester participant Aslam Abubaker 7v5. The Scottish talent in other matches dropped just 3 racks per match against Roy Kimberley, Tony Oscroft and James Kay. Shaw then had to play Tem Dixon and again produced the goods as he was an awesome 7v1 winner. Jayson Shaw 3 Leicester 0. Darren Randall after a few years away from 9ball pool dusted off the cue and looked to be playing well by beating his friend off the table Lee Stacey 7v4 and a hill-hill victory over Mark Parker 7v6 gained Darren two spaces in round two but that was where his tournament ended as he was on the receiving end of two 7v2 defeats at the hands of Benji Buckley and Jonny Cooper.

Benji Buckley is always there or thereabouts at the latter stages of T9B events and that record was set to continue in Barnsley. His tournament began with a tough 7v6 win over Tony Southern, he was then defeated by Chris Hall 7v5. Benji wasn't finished though as in the other half of the draw he cruised through his first three matches dropping a total of 7 racks as he ripped through Mark Parker 7v2, Darren Randell 7v2 and Simon Gardiner 7v3. Simon Gardiner produced some fine pool as mentioned earlier beating Darren Appleton 7v3 he also ended Mark Lunns event 7v6.

There were so many great match ups in the first round I could report regarding them all afternoon but we will now move on to the Quarter Final Line up.

The left half of the draw results appeared like this

Jonny Cooper 7v6 Arfan Dad

Jayson Shaw 7v5 Chris Hall

while the right half of draw results looked like this

Jayson Shaw 7v5 Benji Buckley

Chris Melling 7v6 Dave Nelson

As you can see by this stage of the event the only player left challenging for the Jackpot was Mr Shaw from Glasgow Scotland, Jayson didnt show any signs of fatigue as he player by player reduced the field, also he only returned from America a few days before the event making his results seem even better. At this point Jayson was two more victories away from creating Total9ball history and becoming the first Double Chance Jackpot Winner, standing in his way was Chris Melling and Jonny Cooper. Up first was Melling, Jayson began this match with a legal golden break, Chris scratched of his break and left a 2/9 combo, 2v0 to Jayson, a break dish from Scotlands finest followed... 3v0, Chris wasn’t going to give up though and battled back impressively to lead 4v3 only a miss cue stopped Melling leading 5v3, the score was all tied up at 4v4. The action was hot hot hot as Jayson turned up the heat on Chris again to lead 6v4, Chris made the most of a dry break from Shaw to reduce his arrears to 1, the score was now 6v5, after a short safety battle Melling was in and looked like dishing up the eight remaining balls to apply pressure on Shaw but left himself straight on the 6ball... as he tried to force the pot for position he rattled the 6 and the match was left at Jaysons mercy. Jayson Shaw a 7v5 winner.

One match left and only Jonny Cooper could stop Jayson being the first 2x jackpot winner. Cooper could do little to stop the Flying Scotsman, Jayson was playing formidable 9ball and was fully in stroke as he sunk the final 9ball the final pot was followed by a fistpump and Shaw was announced as T9B National Series Event 3 Winner and the first ever Total9ball Jackpot Winner. Jayson took a total of £1000 (£111.11p per match win) away from the venue and a beautiful T9B glass trophy.

After having the pleasure to watch Jayson throughout the days event its clear he is a Class act and a man on a mission to succeed in any challenge put in front of him. He is a fast exciting player to watch who oozes confidence and a great Total9ball Champion, good luck to him in all future events.
