Kimberley retains 10-ball crown and closes the gap at the top of the rankings

Rileys Cardiff was the venue for the 2nd Annual British Wheelchair 10-ball Pool Championship on the 18/19th August 2012.

Roy “The Sandman” Kimberley ended a run of 5 successive semi-final defeats, as he won his first event in a year on the BWPPA tour.

Kimberley got his campaign off to a flying start with a 7-1 win over Frankie ‘Hot-Wheels’ Gillen. It was another 7-1 win for Kimberley in the next round but this time he faced much tougher opposition in Phil Hendrickson, who had already recorded a 7-3 win over fellow Welshman Craig Welsh. That took Kimberley through to a semi-final meeting with old foe Tony Southern who had won the last 2 events, replacing Kimberley at the top of the rankings. It looked like Southern had continued his run of good form, despite an earlier 7-4 loss to Irishman Fred Dinsmore, by opening up a 5-2 lead, and looked in command, but Kimberley fought back to win 4 in a row to take a 6-5 lead.

Southern took it too hill-hill and the final rack was a very tense affair with both players having chances in the rack. Southern had the best chance towards the end missing an opportunity to leave a tough hook on Roy who was already on 2 fouls, but he left a small window of escape. This was all Roy needed as he escaped from the snooker and went on to win the match.

In the other half of the draw, Dinsmore convincingly beat Danny Luton 7-1 to gain some revenge for losing to him in the European 10-ball final, and after beating Southern came up against Hendrickson, who against the form book ran out a 7-3 winner, booking his place in the final.

Hendrickson and Kimberley were to meet in the British Wheelchair 10-ball Championship final and it can only be described as a one sided match. Hendrickson should have taken the first rack, missing a makeable 10 ball, and never really got into the match and Kimberley eventually took the title with a 7-2 victory.

The Challenge Cup final was contested between the English 8-ball wheelchair World Champion Danny Luton and John Greensmith, Luton winning 5-2.

After the final Kimberley said of his win “I am delighted to retain my title and win my first event in what seems like a long time”, “Big thanks to Riley’s Cardiff for hosting the event. A big thank you to the BWPPA tour sponsors, especially Gentlemen’s Night Out, Simonis for the beautiful cloth, which is now on the match table, and to Predator Cues for sponsoring the tour again in 2012.”

Southern’s lead at the top of the rankings is down to 30 points, and Kimberley needs to finish 2 places above Southern at the last ranking event of the season in October to regain the no 1 ranking, and with it the Ikon 7 cue proudly provided by tour sponsor Predator Cues.

The next event is the Dynamic British 9-Ball Championships, which will be held at Rileys Wavertree, on the weekend of 20th/21st October 2012.
