Champion Daryl Peach (GBR)     Foto: EPBF/AMM

Peach turns the final around and terminates “The Terminator”

Saturday, 18 August 2012: In a final match that was second to none with regards to action, Daryl Peach (GBR) eliminated Niels Feijen (NED) with 8:7.

It was kind of a rematch between Feijen and Peach. A few
weeks ago, they met in the final of the Benelux Open. Back then, Peach had the better end and defeated Feijen so that the Dutch had to settle for second place. And the same destiny awaited him today.

After some high class pool, Feijen was 7:3 ahead and it looked as if no-one could take the title away from him anymore. But one shot turned the match for Daryl Peach. In the 11th rack, Feijen played a nice safe and Peach could not even see the 1-ball. Peach took his time and measured all the angles… and called the 10-ball in the corner pocket. He then shot the cue ball in the side cushion, kicked into the 1-ball which kicked into the 10-ball… and made it in the called pocket! What a shot! “Sometimes when you are standing with your back against the wall, you have to go for these shots”, said Peach after the final. “I knew I could still get him”. That shot probably caused two things: Peach’s self confidence rose to the sky and Feijen started thinking. As the match went along, Feijen committed two easy mistakes while Peach played second to none. He tied the match at 7:7. In the 15th rack, both players exchanged safety shots. It was again Feijen who left a shot for Peach. The Brit took his chance and completed his marvelous comeback, winning the match with 8:7 and taking the tournament title. “I always believed that I could win this match, even when I was trailing 3:7”, said Peach with a smile…

Dynamic Germany Open - Feijen outclasses Koshovyi

A country mile high victory in the semi-final

Saturday, 18 August 2012: Niels Feijen (NED) secured his spot in the final of the Dynamic Billiard Germany Open 2012 by outclassing Artem Koshovyi (UKR) with 8:1.

It seemed as if Koshovyi’s victory in the quarter-final with 8:7 over Mark Gray (GBR) took too much energy off him. He looked exhausted and appeared not to be as focussed as he normally is. Feijen was the complete opposite. He is playing extremely strong and focussed today, always in the zone. Since Koshovyi missed some shots and positions, he became an easy prey for Feijen. When the match was already 5:1 in favour of Feijen, Koshovyi got the chance to start a comeback but he missed the 10-ball. Koshovyi was on the ropes. Feijen completed the set and handed Koshovyi his personal Waterloo, winning the match with 8:1.

The second semi-final was played between Oliver Ortmann (GER) and Daryl Peach (GBR). Ortmann did also not show the performance that he showed in the matches before. He missed an easy 3-ball when trailing 2:3. Instead of staying on the ball, Ortmann let Peach get away. It happened again when the score was 6:5 for Peach. Ortmann missed the 9-ball and that was the beginning of the end for him in the tournament. Peach won the match with 8:4 and will now play for the title against Feijen in the final match. The final match will begin at 18:30 CET.

Dynamic Germany Open - Koshovyi sends Gray home

Ortmann, Feijen and Peach in the semis

Saturday, 18 August 2012: In a grand thriller, Artem Koshovyi (UKR) pipped Mark Gray (GBR) to the post with 8:7.

Today seems to be the day of close decisions in the Dynamic Billiard Germany Open. In the round of the last 16 players this morning, five out of eight matches finished 8:7. That shows how many top players perform at an equal level these days. Two of the winners of the quarter-finals were Koshovyi and Gray. Gray ousted Jentsch (GER) 8:7 after trailing 4:7 already while Koshovyi defeated Skowerski (POL) 8:7. And in their quarter-final match, they went along head to head. Only after eight racks, Gray was leading with two points 5:3. And that was equalized by Koshovyi after the next two racks. Other than that, the match went along in each one of them getting a point but not being able to pull clear of the opponent. So it came to a hill-hill situation at 7:7. Koshovyi proved to have the better nerves and won the rack, snatching the match with 8:7.

Koshovyi will face Niels Feijen (NED) in the semi-final match at 16:00 CET. Feijen eliminated Ralf Souquet (GER) and Radoslaw Babica (POL) for his seat in the semis. The other semi-final will be played at 14:30 CET between Oliver Ortmann (GER) and Daryl Peach (GBR).

This morning, the women’s Euro-Tour has also started. 32 female players will play today and tomorrow for the title and a total prize fund of 6.000,-€. Favourites for the title are Ana Majirina (RUS) and Oliwia Czuprynska (POL), the current World 9-ball Champion in the girl’s division.

During the men’s semi-final and final matches, the women’s event will be halted. It will be continued tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET.

Dynamic Germany Open - Feijen comes out on top of Jungo

Thriller ends with a heart breaking final

Friday, 17 August 2012: In an epic thriller, Niels Feijen (NED) came out on top of Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 8:7.

Both players are fairly known on the European pool scene. Jungo was the winner of last year’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open and came here to defend his title. But Feijen obviously had another idea in his mind. Both players started on a very high level and the quality of the match was good enough for a teaching DVD. The first half of the match was determined by strong safety play of both contestants. Sometimes Lady Luck helped, but that was even between the two of them. In the early stage, Jungo seemed to have the better break. But he could not turn that into points. Feijen either played better safety shots or Jungo was not having a good shot at his first object ball. In the 8th rack, Feijen had two balls down and ran the rack, taking a 5:3 lead over Jungo. Then Jungo had the break shot. He came out dry and left Feijen an open table which the Dutch cleared to gain a 6:3 advantage over Jungo. Then Jungo took a time-out and tried to change the course of the match. And he did. Feijen came up dry on his break shot and left an open table for Jungo which he cleared. Then Jungo broke and forced Feijen to play a foul shot. Jungo ran the next rack, trailing only 5:6. The tension was very high at that point in time. In the 12th rack, Feijen broke the balls and had one ball down. He tried a bank shot but he failed. Feijen left a tough but makeable shot for Jungo. Instead of making the ball and tying the match at 6:6, Jungo missed it and allowed Feijen to get on the hill, taking a 7:5 lead. What a drama! What an error from Jungo! Jungo needed a good and lucky break in the 13th rack. He had a ball down, and the layout was very promising for him. Jungo played until he came to the 7-ball. As a shock for all spectators, Jungo missed the 7-ball, leaving only four balls on the table for Feijen. “That was it!”, everybody thought, but Feijen showed nerves and played a bad position for the 8-ball and missed it. Jungo won the rack and the next one and now the match was a hill-hill thriller at 7:7. Jungo broke the 15th rack. Two balls went down and all balls were playable. But he ran out of position for the 4-ball. He tried to fire it in but he missed it and left the balls for Feijen. “The Terminator” ran the remaining balls on the table and took the match with 8:7.

Other notable results from the round of the final 32 players include Oliver Ortmann (GER) defeating Fabio Petroni (ITA) with 8:7. Albin Ouschan (AUT) remained victorious over Chris Melling (GBR) with 8:3. Ralf Souquet (GER) sent compatriot Nicolas Ottermann (GER) home with 8:4. Dominic Jentsch (GER) creamed Ivar Saris (NED) 8:1. Radoslaw Babica (POL) overcame Nick van den Berg (NED) with 8:5.

Tomorrow, the men’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open will continue at 10:00 CET with the matches of the last 16 players. At 09:00 CET, the women’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open will begin. 32 women from all over Europe will take their chance to win the title.

Dynamic Germany Open - Peach settles outstanding score with Gerards

Daryl Peach (GBR)     Foto: EPBF/AMM

Former 9-ball World Champion joins the single elimination stage

Friday, 17 August 2012: Daryl Peach (GBR), former World 9-ball Champion, eliminated Roy Gerards (NED) with a clear 8:3 victory from the Dynamic Billiard Germany Open.

The match had already appeared on the scoreboards in the
same setup. Peach had to play Gerards in his first round yesterday. Then, the young Dutch was able to win over the former World 9-ball Champion with 8:5. Peach was not happy with his performance at all. But he got another chance to settle the outstanding score with Gerards. Peach had won all his matches on the loser’s side, eliminating Mario Herzer (GER) 8:2, Martin Poguntke (GER) 8:1, Thomas Engert (GER) 8:5 and Bruno Muratore (ITA) 8:3. This winning streak brought him to the loser’s qualification match.

Gerards, after sending Peach to the left side of the draw, won 8:2 over Dennis Bolten (GER) before he lost to Alexander Kazakis (GRE) 2:8. Due to the setup of the charts in the Euro-Tour, they met again. And Peach did not let a minute pass by before he showed Gerards that he would have to face “another Peach” today. The Brit was full of self-confidence and played extremely well.

He seemed to adapt to the playing conditions much better than yesterday. Whether Gerards was impressed by Peach’s performance or whether he just could not deliver the same performance as yesterday – who knows?! It is a fact that Peach dominated the match and deservedly won with 8:3. Gerards missed the shots to make the big points while Peach made them with all of his experience.

Other notable results from the loser’s qualification round include Nicolas Ottermann (GER) thrashing the local hero from Berlin, Sascha Tege (GER) with 8:2. Another match between compatriots was the match between Huidji See and Marc Bijsterbosch, both from the Netherlands.

See was the favourite, being the reigning World 10-ball Champion. But Bijsterbosch who just got out of the junior’s division, gave him a tough challenge. However, in the end See was head and shoulders above Bijsterbosch and won the match 8:4.

Dynamic Germany Open - Ortmann through to final 32

Close results in the winner’s qualification round

Friday, 17 August 2012: Oliver Ortmann (GER) also won his third match in the Dynamic Billiard Germany Open Euro-Tour, defeating Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) clearly with 8:4.

The result looks clearer than the match actually was. Ortmann, who had already beaten Paddy McLoughlin and Valery Kuloyants, had to deal with Chinakhov in the winner’s qualification round. Victories over Alexander Usbeck and Andrey Seroshtan paved the way for Chinakhov into that match. And Chinakhov had the better start. He took a nice 3:1 lead over Ortmann.

One of Ortmann’s weakest points was his break. He just could not make a ball of the break and get position for his first shot. On the other hand, the safety play was Ortmann’s strong point. He definitely played better safety shots than Chinakhov and he had better escapes and resafes than the Russian. After four racks, the tide turned in the match. Ortmann grew stronger and stronger but still had to struggle with his break shot. Unfortunately, Chinakhov could not benefit from that. As the match went along, Ortmann claimed rack after rack and even overtook Chinakhov. After nine racks, the score was 6:3 in favour of Ortmann with Chinakhov’s break shot coming up. He broke the balls and remained dry on the break with the 1-ball playable and the 10-ball in the jaws of the pocket. Ortmann pocketed the first three balls and fired the 4-ball onto the 10-ball in order to sink it in the pocket and make the score 7:4 in his favour. Chinakhov never really recovered in that match anymore. He gave Ortmann a tough fight in the next rack, played the better safety shots and took the rack. But just after that, Ortmann won the next rack. Chinakhov scratched with only two balls left on the table. A deserved win for Ortmann but the result does not really display the course of the match.

Other notable results include from the winner’s qualification round include Denis Grabe (EST) creaming Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 8:3. David Alcaide (ESP) won the thriller between him and last tournament’s winner Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) by a margin of 8:7. In the loser’s round, Daryl Peach (GBR) eliminated Thomas Engert (GER) with 8:5 from the event.

Dynamic Germany Open - He struggled against Rocha

Sara Rocha (POR)     Foto: EPBF/AMM

A match of wasted chances

Friday, 17 August 2012: In a match that seemed to be never ending, Mario He (AUT) eventually took the victory and sent Sara Rocha (POR) to the loser’s side.

Rocha’s performance was quite impressive so far. Not too many
women compete in men’s events. And if they do, normally the odds for them are not so good. But Rocha has already won her first match over Russia’s Roman Yaroshenko and now met the reigning men’s European 8-ball Champion Mario He in the second winner’s round. Everything looked like a walk in the park for He, but that was definitely not the case. In fact, Rocha did beat herself. She played some magnificent shots and escapes from safeties just to miss an easy shot afterwards and give the match to He.

“Mario is not good when he has to play against women”, stated Michael Neumann, the Austrian Coach, “he met Jasmin Ouschan about 9 to 10 times in competition and has never won against her so far. I think the problem is in his mind”. And it almost proved to become true. Though Rocha gave away so many racks by making easy mistakes on one of the last remaining balls on the table, she still kept the match close and gave He a tough challenge.

However, in the end she had to give in and allow He to take the victory with 8:6. Rocha will have another chance to stay in the men’s event by winning her next matches on the loser’s side.

Dynamic Germany Open - Close battle between Malai and Mortier

Nick Malai (ALB)     Foto: EPBF/AMM

Great comeback without happy end

Thursday, 16 August 2012: Nick Malai (ALB) eliminated Olivier Mortier (BEL) from the event, defeating him 8:6 in the first loser’s round.

It was one of those close battles that are nowadays characteristically for the Euro-Tour, due to the high concentration of good players. Mortier opened the match and won the first two racks. Malai made some errors that were directly punished by Mortier. Then, Malai ran away and took a 5:3 and 6:4 lead over Mortier. At that stage, Malai controlled the match and it did not look like Mortier would be able to stop him anymore.

But the young Belgian played some strong and skilful shots and found himself, only trailing 5:6. Yet, Malai had the better performance but he ran out of position for the 9-ball. He tried to play a combination shot but he missed the 10-ball. Mortier took the chance and tied the match at 6:6. The pressure was on now for Malai. Giving away a 2-point-lead at that stage of a match can have a fatal impact on a player’s mind. But to the opposite, it seemed as if Malai even grew stronger. Mortier broke the balls and had the 1-ball down. When he tried to pocket the 2-ball, he scratched. That was his last visit to the table. Malai ran that rack and broke and ran the next one in order to take the match with 8:6 from Mortier.

Other notable results include one of the two female participants Sara Rocha (POR) won her match over Roman Yaroshenko (RUS) with 8:6. Dominik Jentsch (GER) creamed Petri Makkonen (FIN) 8:1. Young Dutchman Roy Gerards sent Daryl Peach (GBR) to the loser’s side with 8:5.

Dynamic Germany Open - Ullah knocks Melling for six

Mattey Ullah (NOR)     Foto: EPBF/AMM

All other favourites on track in Dynamic Billiard Germany Open

Thursday, 16 August 2012: In the first winner’s round, Mattey Ullah (NOR) knocked Chris Melling (GBR) for six by beating him 8:3.

On paper, Melling was definitely the favourite to win this match. Melling is currently the number 4 ranked player in the overall rankings while Ullah ranks on 47. But the match took an unforeseeable progress. Already in the first rack, Melling was able to draw first blood but he missed an easy 6-ball and left the opener for Ullah. That proved to be typical for Melling’s performance. He seemed to be somewhere else but with his match. “I did not have the best of times recently, so I guess this is what must happen to me right now” stated Melling after the match. A real peculiar thing happened in the 5th rack. The score was already 3:1 for Ullah when Melling broke the balls and had the 7-ball down. He tried to pocket the 1-ball, missed it but got another lucky kiss from the cue ball so the 1-ball fell in the called pocket. However, the cue ball scratched and gave ball in hand to Ullah. Just like Melling in the first rack, Ullah missed an easy 6-ball and gave way to Melling. But the likable Brit who is normally so consistent in his performance played a bad position for the 10-ball. Instead of taking great care, he just looked at it, fired and missed it. It looked like he was really frustrated with what was going on. Ullah remained focussed and made the 10-ball, leading 4:1.

The match went along but Melling did not seem to be able to find his rhythm. When he broke the balls in the 11th rack, he was already trailing 3:7. As if there was a curse lying on Melling today, the 1-ball jumped off the table. Ullah used that ball in hand to run the rack and get the deserved victory with 8:3.

Other notable results include Jayson Shaw (SCO) winning 8:4 over Christophe Creter (GER). Oliver Ortmann (GER) won his match over Paddy McLoughlin (IRE) with 8:3. In the Russian junior’s clash, Andrey Seroshtan won 8:2 over his fellow countryman Vitaly Pavlukhin.
