8-ball champions crowned in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, Germany
Wednesday, 01 August 2012: The 8-ball individuals at this year’s Dynamic Billiard European Youth Championships have been decided.
Moritz Lauwereyns (BEL) crushed Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) with 7:3. It was amazing to have these two players in the final. For both of them, it was already a great achievement. Since they are both known to be slow players, the tournament management decided to have the match under the shot-clock. Lauwereyns seemed to have the better role in the final and won the match deservedly.
In the pupil’s division, Joshua Filler (GER) had to deal with David Vu (GER). Since they are both teammates in the German contingency, they know each other quite well. No wonder the match was close. In the end, Filler had the better and snatched his second title for these European Championships.
In the girl’s division, Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) defeated Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) 5:2. Just like in the semi-final match, Polovinchuk missed some chances in the early stage of the match and was down 1:3 quickly. But Khodjaeva played too strong for her to intercept her. In the end, Khodjaeva won 5:2 and her victory was never in danger.

8-Ball down to final matches
Wednesday, 01 August 2012: In a very intense semi-final match, Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) ousted current 9-ball World Champion Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) with 5:3.
In the beginning, the match looked like business as usual. Both players played a run out for first rack to make a statement. Then, Polovinchuk made some potting errors and allowed Czuprynska to take a 3:1 lead. The audience was convinced to see a quick match with Czuprynska as the winner in the end. But Polovinchuk put a spoke in Czuprynska’s wheel. She remained calm and started to play better. Soon the scoreboard showed 3:3, and Czuprynska took a time-out. “My goal was to reach a semi-final. I had already achieved that so I could play without too much pressure” said Polovinchuk after the match. And she did play! The more Polovinchuk improved her performance, the more mistakes Czuprynska made. “I think she became nervous in the end”, guesses Polovinchuk. The match turned completely in Polovinchuk’s favour and the young Ukrainian took rack after rack, winning the semi-final with 5:3.
The final matches of the 8-ball individuals will be played around 20:00 CET.

Two really tight matches take him to the single elimination round in 9-ball
Wednesday, 01 August 2012: Today, the 9-ball competition started at the Dynamic Billiard European Youth Championships.
One player really drew the attention of the audience: Leonid Klishar from the Ukraine. In his first round match, he played Miika Myllymaeki (FIN). Though Klishar was leading 7:5, he was not able to pocket the deciding 9-ball. Instead, Myllymaeki joined Klishar on the hill. Only at 7:7, Klishar was able to get the final point and win the match with 8:7.
As if that was not enough for one day, Klishar repeated that result in his next round. This time he played Roberto Bartol from Croatia. It was the Croatian player who drew first blood in the match. He even accomplished a comfortable lead at 4:1 over Klishar. Then Klishar fought back and the match went head to head from 5:5 on. Though Bartol was leading 7:6 first, Klishar was again able to stand the heat and win the match with 8:7. Great performance by the Ukrainian junior so far.
Other notable results include defending Champion Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) winning his opening match over Andrey Seroshtan (RUS) with 8:6. Jesse Kivela (FIN) managed to defeat Russian star player Vitaly Pavlukhin with 8:6 in the winner’s qualification round and sent him to the loser’s side.
In the girl’s division, all favourite players won their matches. In the lower part of the flowchart, Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) will have to player her next match against Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) while Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) will have to deal with Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER). These matches will be played tomorrow at 10:30 CET.
The tournament will continue today with the quarter-finals of the 8-ball competition at 16:30 CET.

Nail-biting finish in straight pool decided the score for the teams
Tuesday, 31 July 2012: In two team matches, straight pool brought the decision – and what a close decision it was.
In the winner’s qualification round of the junior’s division,
Team Belgium played Team Norway. Audun Risan Heimsjoe brought the 8-ball point clearly home to Norway by defeating Belgium’s Laurenz Cansier with 7:2. Moritz Lauwereyns took care of the Belgian answer by winning the 9-ball with 8:5 over Even Letnes Waernes. The overall team score was 1:1, the straight pool had to decide. That match between Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) and Mikael Oegaard (NOR) turned out to become a thriller. Khodjaeva had the better start and dominated Oegaard who needed some time to focus on his play. But he then got in the zone and tightened the match up and managed to win the straight pool encounter with 100:94 over Khodjaeva and brought the victory to Team Norway with 2:1.
Even closer than that was the match between Team Netherlands and Team Denmark in the second loser’s round of the pupil’s division. Jasper van Donk had won the 8-ball for the Netherlands with 7:4 over Joel Rosnfeldt while Frederik Madsen took the 9-bal with 8:5 from Guido Janssen. This levelled the match at 1:1. The straight pool was the decider again. It turned out to be an even closer affair than in the match between Belgium and Norway. In the final stage, van Dijk went on the hill and missed his final ball. The score was 99:93 in his favour. Andreas Madsen proved to have really strong nerves and ran out the match, winning the straight pool with the closest of margins 100:99 and bringing Team Denmark in the next round.

Tough luck for the young Norwegian
Tuesday, 31 July 2012: What a thrilling match in the junior’s single elimination stage of the last 16 players in 8-ball individuals. Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) pipped Mikael Oegaard (NOR) to the post with 7:6.
So far it has not been the championship for Szewczyk. Last year’s 9-ball and Team Champion and runner-up in 8-ball Wojciech Szewczyk has not yet played up to his ability. But he has still a chance in 8-ball to correct that. Today, he played against Norway’s Mikael Oegaard and things did not look too bright for him. Oegaard was a tough opponent who gave Szewczyk a hard time. Most time during the match, Szewczyk was trailing and in the final stage, Oegaard even took a 6:4 lead over the likeable Polish. But somehow Oegaard could not seal the deal. He allowed Szewczyk to keep a foot in the door. With all his experience, Szewczyk managed to make the match a hill-hill situation at 6:6. That probably gave him the momentum he needed. He took the 13th rack off Oegaard and eliminated him from the 8-ball individuals while Szewczyk will play in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Other notable results include Marcel Fortunski (POL) ousting Finn Eschment (GER) with 7:5 from the 8-ball individuals. Berk Mehmetcik (TNC), the dark horse from North Cyprus, defeated yesterday’s 10-ball finalist Tobias Bongers (GER) with 7:4. Bence Varga (HUN) hammered Christian Fischer (SWE) with 7:0.
Today’s competition will continue with two more rounds of Team play, starting at 16:45 CET.

Day five provides interesting 8-ball action
Tuesday, 31 July 2012: On the feature table 24, Andreas Madsen (DEN) thrashed Vili Puumalainen (FIN) 5:2.
In the beginning, the quality of the match was improvable. Both competitors committed many mistakes and the racks were rather lost than won. However, since both players gave chances away, they both claimed their first points. At a score of 2:1 for Puumalainen, he was almost on his way to get a two-point lead. But he missed his final striped ball and allowed Madsen to the table. The Danish player chose a well-executed safety shot which opened the way for him to win the rack. That tied the match at 2:2. From then on, both players’ performances improved. However, Puumalainen got more and more frustrated. He played well shots but picked the wrong ball several times which created avoidable problems for him. Madsen played smarter and used the chances that he was given by Puumalainen. Consequently, he took rack after rack off of his opponent. In the end, Puumalainen was not able to win one more rack. Madsen grew from his mistakes and won the match 6:2.
Other notable results from this morning are Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) winning 5:1 over Marion Winkler (AUT). Daniel Tangudd (SWE) drove Kestutis Zadeikis (LIT) to his knees with 6:3. Bence Varga (HUN) eliminated Gerhard Schwab (AUT) from the event with a 7:4 victory.
