Finalists (l to r) Tony Southern (GBR) and Jouni Tahti (FIN)

World Champ Jouni takes British title

The concluding tour stop of Europe’s largest wheelchair pool tour the BWPPA Dynamic Billiards tour was held at Rileys Wavertree with the British wheelchair 9-ball Championship, which attracted Jouni Tahti triple wheelchair 9-ball World Champion, who displayed why he is the #1 wheelchair player on the planet. First up for the Finn was Aslam Abubaker who was dispatched 7-3, before Tony Southern sent Tahti to the one-loss bracket with a 7-5 win.

Meanwhile Roy Kimberley, the UK’s #1 wheelchair pool player started his campaign with a 7-2 win over John Greensmith, and followed that up with a victory over Phil Hendrickson 7-3. In the one-loss side Jouni Tahti’s next opponent was Gary Swift, Tahti got back to winning ways with a comfortable 7-3 win.

The Semi-Finals
The first semi-final between Roy Kimberley and Jouni Tahti ended in complete contrast to what people would have expected. Tahti booked his place in the final with an emphatic 7-2 win over the UK #1.

The second semi-final was between two of the most in form BWPPA players Tony Southern, winner of the Mersey 9-ball Shootout and Phil Hendrickson, the man Southern beat in that Mersey final in August. Southern came out the victor once again beating Hendrickson 7-5, booking a place in his second successive final.

The Final
In the final Southern was 6-5 up when he made a critical error when Southern played a safe on the 9-ball with just his shaft, which led to Tahti calling a foul. Tahti went on to make it hill-hill. Then in the deciding rack Southern yet again let a Championship winning chance go missing an easy 8-ball which enabled Tahti to step in and win his maiden BWPPA event.

In the Challenge event former BWPPA #2 Matthew Gleaves entered his first BWPPA event in 12 months took the same Challenge Cup he won at the same event in 2010. Gleaves beat Shaun Madin 5-2 in the final.

SEASON REVIEW

Well done to Roy Kimberley for maintaining his No. 1 ranking in 2011. We have lots of new players this year and hope to continue this trend and see the return of a few old faces next year. The most improved player on the tour was relative newcomer Phil Hendrickson from Cardiff, who has stormed to No. 3 in the Rankings with one final appearance and a semi-final appearance.

Tony Southern is at No. 2 following his maiden win at event 4 and final at event 5.
