Dominic Jentsch - Germany

“I am overwhelmed”

Dominic Jentsch (GER) wins the Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun 2011 with an 8:4 victory over Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) in the final match.

Stepanov committed some avoidable mistakes in the first racks and allowed Jentsch to take a 3:0 lead over him. Then he fought back and equalized the score at 3:3. At that point in time, the match looked like turning over in Stepanov’s favour. But Jentsch played his A-game consequently and did not leave any chances for Stepanov to overtake him. To the opposite, Stepanov played some bad shots and had the weaker break than Jentsch. The German dominated the match and won it with a clear 8:4 result in the end.

“I am overwhelmed to have won this tournament here”, stated Jentsch after the match, “I had a bad roll for quite some time and it feels so good to be back again”. “I think I have played on a high level constantly in the final”, said Jentsch when asked about the final. “Though the score seems quite clear, I was the lucky winner in the end.” “My private turning point in this tournament was the 8:7 victory over Andreas Roschkowsky”. “I would like to thank the organizer Beassy, Beatrix Dobossy and the EPBF for this event. Everything here was so perfect and well organized, it was a privilege to be here and participate in the three events.”

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - No mercy for "The Kaiser"

Konstantin Stepanov - Russia

Jentsch will be the man in the other corner in the final

Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) took out Ralf Souquet (GER) with 8:5.

It did not seem to be Souquet’s match. He was trailing 2:5 and he had made some errors in order to find himself where he was. In the 8th rack, Stepanov even had the chance to take a 4-rack lead but he missed a makeable 3-ball. Then Souquet ran the rack, making the score 3:5. The following racks contained no big surprises and the match came to a score of 6:5 for Stepanov. He ran all balls but suddenly found himself with the cue ball behind his opponent’s object ball, having no shot at the last ball of his group. He aimed into the long rail and pocketed the object ball with a kick shot in the called pocket, receiving perfect position for the 8-ball. That was the rack that put Stepanov on the hill over the favoured Souquet. In the next rack it was Souquet’s break coming up. He broke the balls, had a ball down… and scratched! Stepanov got to the table and cleared the table, securing an 8:5 victory over “The Kaiser” that put him in the final match of the Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun tournament.

“I feel great! I did not make one mistake in the whole match”, stated a very happy Stepanov in the interview after the match. When asked about the reason why he thought he won the match, modest Stepanov replied “Of course I cannot say anything about Ralf’s mental side. He is the most experienced guy I’ve ever seen.” “This time, he was just a bit unlucky on the break”. “The mistakes that Ralf has committed in the beginning together with his bad luck on the break shot made it possible for me to win this match”, said Stepanov. “I knew if I’d make one mistake, it could be the end for me, facing an opponent like Ralf Souquet”:

The opponent for Konstantin Stepanov in the final match will be Dominic Jentsch (GER). Jentsch eliminated Jungo (SUI) with 8:5 after being 0:4 down to the Swiss player.

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - Jungo victorious over Ortmann

Dominic Jentsch - Germany

All German clash with high tension

In a terrific match, Dominic Jentsch (GER) dismissed Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) with the closest of results, 8:7.

It looked like plain sailing for Roschkowsky. He took a nice and comfortable 5:1 lead and nothing indicated that Jentsch was still planning his way back into the match. But he might have remembered the three encounters he already had with Roschkowsky at German National Championships. Every time, Jentsch left the table as the winner. Whatever it was that came to his and/or Roschkowsky’s mind, it turned the match over completely. Jentsch played an incredible comeback and tied the match at 5:5. As in other matches, the break shot was the key for victory in this match. Jentsch broke the 11th rack and came up dry. Roschkowsky ran out; 6:5. Then Roschkowsky broke and scratched the second time in a row on his own break, giving Jentsch the chance to run the rack which Jentsch did to tie the score again; 6:6. Then, history repeats itself with Jentsch breaking and scratching on his break, just like Roschkowsky did in his break before. Roschkowsky ran out and the scoreboard showed 7:6 in his favour. One more rack was needed for Roschkowsky, having his own break shot coming up. This time, the cue ball stays on the table but no ball goes in a pocket. Jentsch gets to the table and makes the match a hill-hill thriller at 7:7. The excitement could probably not be higher when Jentsch approached the table for his next and final break shot. He broke the balls…. and scratched in the side pocket! Roschkowsky takes the cue ball in hand and takes his time thinking. The layout of the balls on the table looked possible. He chose the solids which way a bit amazing. He pocketed four balls and left a long shot at his next object ball. Whether his nerves had left him or whether it was something else… the answer only knows Roschkowsky. After having played almost perfect pool throughout the whole match, he misses a makeable 3-ball and gives the table to Jentsch. Jentsch remains cool and runs all striped balls, winning this epic thriller with 8:7.

In the other quarter-final matches, Ralf Souquet (GER) ousted Richard Jones (GBR) clearly with 8:3. Dimitri Jungo (SUI) crushed Manuel Ederer (GER) quite dominant with 8:6. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) had another exciting encounter with “Napoleon” Marcus Chamat (SWE). Stepanov had the better nerves in the end, winning the match with 8:7.

The upcoming semi-finals between Ralf Souquet v Konstantin Stepanov and Dimitri Jungo v Dominic Jentsch will be started at 14:30 local time.

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - Jungo victorious over Ortmann

Dimitri Jungo - Switzerland

Many close results in the previous round

Dimitri Jungo (SUI) eliminated Oliver Ortmann (GER) from the Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun event with 8:5.

As in many other matches of this tournament also, the break shot really made the difference in this match. Ortmann was able to take a 3:1 and 4:2 lead over Jungo but then his break shot left him. He was not able to play one more break shot where a ball was pocketed. Of course, Jungo took his benefits from that. Regarding their play, both players were performing at eye-level. But one cannot win a match in this high level tournament if the break shot always comes up dry. Unfortunately for Ortmann, that is exactly what has happened to him. Jungo performed on a very high level and missed only two balls in the whole match. When the score was 5:5, Jungo ran out of position with the cue ball for the eight. He jacked his cue stick up and played a masse shot to pocket the 8-ball in the called pocket. From then on, Jungo made balls on his break and ran out while Ortmann came up dry and Jungo also ran out. In the end, the 8:5 victory for Jungo was well deserved.

Other notable results from this round include Gabor Solymosi (HUN) winning with 8:7 over Bruno Muratore (ITA). Carlo Dalmatin (CRO) threw Nick van den Berg (NED) out of the event with an 8:7 victory. Raj Hundal (IND) finished Balasz Miko (HUN) also with 8:7.

The round of the last 16 players will be played on Thursday, October 6th, at 09:30 local time.

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - Day 2 - Miko flies Hungarian flag in Last 32

Balasz Miko - Hungary

Solymosi also through; Shaw and Majid ousted

Balasz Miko (HUN) entered the single elimination stage of the last 32 players of the Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun by winning over Jim Chawki (SWE) by the skin of his teeth with 8:7.

Chawki, a Swedish youngster who just came out of the junior’s division, played a good match against one of two remaining Hungarian hopes, Balasz Miko. None of the actors at the table was able to take a clear lead over the other. The match went along and both players won their racks in turn which unavoidably led to the hill-hill situation at 7:7. It was Chawki’s break and he pocketed balls, having a good position for the cue ball. He pocketed an object ball with a combination shot and another one of his group’s ball came to rest in a pretty awkward position, lying at the nose of the side pocket. Chawki played position for that and even managed to pocket that ball in the lower corner pocket. But he snookered himself by putting the cue ball behind the 8-ball, making it almost impossible to pocket one of his three remaining object balls. He tried to pocket a ball with a masse shot but hit the 8-ball first. With ball-in-hand, Miko came to the table and ran all balls, winning the match with 8:7.

Miko’s compatriot Solymosi had a similar tough match, just winning with 8:6 over Shaun Storry (GBR). Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) took down Imran Majid (GBR) in a gripping match with 8:7. Majid joins the destiny of Jayson Shaw (SCO) who fell to Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) with 6:8.

Right after the loser’s qualification round was played, the round of the last 32 players was drawn.

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - Day 2 - Jentsch takes out Gray

Dominic Jentsch - Germany

Van den Berg on his way to the single elimination stage

In an intense encounter, Dominic Jentsch (GER) took out Mark Gray (GBR) 8:5 and proceeded to the round of the last 32 players while Gray needs to win another match on the one-loss side.

The course of the match was a bit peculiar. Jentsch went ahead with a clear 4:1 lead when Gray struck back and managed to tie the score at 4:4. It looked like both players would be ready to engage in a tough match but the rest of the match was mainly decided by the break shot. For the racking of the balls, the Ultimate Breakmaster was used, a template that makes sure all balls are frozen when the rack is set up. Jentsch broke and ran the next rack, taking a 5:4 lead over Gray. Then Gray broke and came up dry with his next break shot. Jentsch ran that rack plus another one, being on the hill with 7:4. Then Gray broke and ran all balls, coming closer with 5:7 to Jentsch. But the German youngster played another break-and-run and finished his opponent with 8:5. Gray’s only “mistake” was coming up dry on his own break shot in the 10th rack. That shows how high the level of play is at the Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun.

Other notable results of the winner’s qualification round include Ralf Souquet (GER) defeating Jim Chawki (SWE) with 8:4. Bruno Muratore (ITA) overcame Artem Koshovyi (UKR) with 8:5. Nick van den Berg (NED) just crossed the finish line, winning with a margin of 8:7 over Markus Juva (FIN). Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) crushed Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) surprisingly clear with 8:2. Oliver Ortmann (GER) left no chance for Karl Boyes (GBR) and entered the single elimination stage with an 8:3 victory over Boyes.

Beassy 8-Ball World Top Gun - Day 1 - Van den Berg takes out Majid

Nick van den Berg - Netherlands

Beassy™ 8-Ball World’s Top Gun has started today

Nick van den Berg (NED) won his first match in the winner’s bracket, sending Imran Majid (GBR) to the one-loss side with 8:7.

In the early stage it looked as if van den Berg was handing a doughnut to Majid. After the first 40 minutes into the match, the score was 5:0 in favour of van den Berg. With alternate break in 8-ball in a race to 8 racks, it seemed like a mission impossible for Majid to ever come back into the match. But he came up with a remarkable comeback. He was able to tie the score at 6:6 by running out after a safety shot battle and the pressure was on for van den Berg.

Both players went for a time-out and came back, ready to shoot it out. Van den Berg broke but came up dry. Majid went to the table and ran out of position after having pocketed three balls. He had to play the next shot as a kick shot but missed it by quite a bit. That brought van den Berg back to the table. He ran all balls and went on the hill, making the score 7:6. Majid’s break was coming up next. He broke the balls and the 10-ball went down. He had a very complicated layout before him but pocketed ball after ball, including some really tough shots. He found himself on the 8-ball and had to call it over another ball. He took his time for the shot and went for it and played it perfectly. 7:7 was shown on the scoreboard. Then van den Berg had the final break shot. He broke, pocketed a ball and never let Majid back to the table, winning the match with 8:7 and sending Majid to the one-loss side of the flowchart.
