Darren Appleton - Great Britain
Darren Appleton wins the first Beassy™ 9-Ball World Class Open
In a match that was packed with excitement and thrill, Darren Appleton (GBR) defeated Sandor Tot (SRB) with 9:6. Appleton wrote history today. He is the first winner ever of a Beassy™ event.
The match was equal until both players had three points in their account. “At that time, I was a bit disappointed since I thought I’d given some racks to Sandor because he had made mistakes and I didn’t punish him for it”, said Appleton. From then on, Appleton took the lead and never gave it back again. The best Tot was able to do was closing in to a score of 5:7 in favour of Appleton. Tot just played too aggressive and went for shots where he should have gone for the safety option. In the 15th rack when the score was 8:6 in favour of Appleton, Tot scratched and Appleton had a 2-9 combination shot lined up. “I just struggled a little bit to get over the line”, was Appleton’s comment when asked about this combination shot since he missed it. “It was not an easy shot but it was hard to get position from the 3-ball to the 4-ball”. Later on in that rack, Appleton got a good roll by hiding the cue ball behind the 7-ball when he attempted a safety shot. “That won me the match”, analysed Appleton afterwards. “It is important for me to win this title. It gives me good confidence for the US Open that will come up in two weeks’ time and I am the defending Champion there”.

“I really enjoyed the event. It is a great honour to win such a big tournament, especially with this field,” stated Appleton after the match. In addition to the prize money and the trophy, Appleton received a beautiful Beassy™ cue from Yacht series, called “Yacht Wave” with a diamond in the butt. “That really is a beautiful cue stick and I loved it from the moment I saw it”, said Appleton.
The owner of Beassy™, Beatrix Dobossy informed us, “We have launched our website last Sunday and we have so many inquiries already. It is by far more than we expected”. “We get orders from all over the World, including the United States, China and the United Arab Emirates. People are really delighted with the design of our cues.” “We already created so much interest, it takes up to eight weeks for us to send out a cue stick if you order one today. This is by far more and better than we ever expected”, stated Dobossy and smiled.

Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Tot secures spot in final
Sandor Tot - Serbia
Appleton is second man to reach the final tonight
In an intensive battle, Sandor Tot (SRB) came out on top over Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) with 9:5.
The match could be called “The missed chances of Konstantin Stepanov”. The Russian had taken an early 4:1 lead and played much more consistently than Tot. But in the 6th rack his troubles started. Stepanov was on his way to the 5:1 when he miscued on the 5-ball and gave ball-in-hand to Tot who ran out. After that, the whole match changed. Stepanov continued to make avoidable mistakes while Tot grew stronger and stronger. In the 10th rack, the score was still 5:4 in favour of Stepanov, when the Russian pocketed the 7-ball and the cue ball jumped off the table since he played the shot too hard. Tot got again ball in hand and tied the match at 5:5. In the next four racks, Stepanov missed two easy shots and scratched once. That was simply too much for him to survive this semi-final against Tot who won the match with 9:5 in the end.
In the other semi-final, Darren Appleton (GBR) took fellow countryman Mark Gray (GBR) down 9:7. Appleton was trailing in the beginning of the match. Gray had the better start and took a comfortable 6:2 lead over his opponent. But Appleton never gives up. He fought back and come up with an incredible winning streak. Out of the following eight racks, Gray won one while Appleton took all the other ones, winning the match with 9:7.
The final match between Sandor Tot and Darren Appleton will be played tonight at 18:30 local time.
Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Stepanov finishes Roschkowsky
Konstantin Stepanov - Russia
Semi-finals to be played on Tuesday night
In a breath-taking quarter-final match, Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) defeated Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) with 9:8.
In the beginning, the match looked to be a walk in the park for Roschkowsky. He was already ahead 4:2 when Stepanov had a clear layout on the table. He positioned the cue ball almost straight on the 7-ball and scratched while pocketing the 7-ball. “Maybe I played the shot too fast”, said Stepanov, “I did not have enough concentration for this shot”. However, instead of making the score 4:3, he was allowing Roschkowsky to take a 5:2 lead. The German won another rack, making the score even 6:2. The lights seemed to go out for Stepanov. But in the 9th rack, things seemed to change. Roschkowsky played a safety shot on the 2-ball but left a combination shot for Stepanov. The Russian accepted the gift and made it 6:3. Later on in the match, the score was 6:5 for Roschkowsky, Stepanov broke the balls and had a clear shot at the 2-ball with a dead-in 3-9 combination on the table. But it was a dry break, so Roschkowsky made the point, turning the score 7:5. Lady Luck seemed to jump from one player to another during the match. Roschkowsky got on the hill first, and in the 14th rack he was about to win. Leading 8:6, he fired a 5-9 combination in but scratched. Stepanov ran out. “In that situation, luck was really on my side” stated Stepanov. “I did not have any chance then and I think he makes this combination shot 9 out of 10 times”. The next rack was determined by errors from both players with Stepanov potting the 9-ball, making the score 8:8. The drama unfolded in the final rack. After a few safety shots were exchanged, Stepanov took the risk and pocketed the 5-ball over one rail. But he scratched. Roschkowsky got ball-in-hand and made all balls but missed a tough 9-ball. Stepanov got a bad position for the 9-ball but made it dead center in the pocket, winning the match with 9:8. “Andreas was too nervous in the end of the match”, mentioned Stepanov, “He missed balls that he normally pockets. Good for me!” said the likeable Russian with a smile.
In the other quarter-final matches, Darren Appleton (GBR) crushed Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) with 9:3. Mark Gray (GBR) eliminated Denis Grabe (EST) with 9:4. In another thrilling encounter, Sandor Tot (SRB) overcame Serge Das (BEL) with 9:7.
The semi-final matches between Sandor Tot v Konstantin Stepanov and Darren Appleton v Mark Gray and the final will be played tomorrow night at 16:30 respectively at 18:30 local time. The Beassy™ 8-ball World’s Top Gun tournament starts tomorrow at 09:00 local time.
Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Down to Last 16
Nick Malai - Albania
Ortmann ousted by unheralded Malai
Nick Malai (ALB) ousted Oliver Ortmann (GER) from the Beassy™ 9-ball World Class Open in Eger, Hungary, with 9:5.
It was a start to finish victory for Malai. He was always in the lead over the former World Champion from Germany. When the scoreboard showed 6:4 in favour of Malai, Ortmann seemed to be able to come closer but then ran out of position for the 8-ball. He hid the cue ball behind the 9-ball. He then had to hit the 8-ball as a kick shot which he did but he left two open balls for Malai. The Albanian took the chance and made the score 7:4 in his favour. The next rack, Ortmann had the break shot. He jumped the cue ball off the table and Malai got in with ball-in-hand. Instead of getting on the hill, Malai missed the 9-ball and gave a second life to Ortmann. The score was then 7:5 in favour of Malai. The 13th rack started out with tactical play. Safeties were exchanged and unexpectedly, Ortmann played a very bad safety shot. Malai took that gift and went on the hill, leading 8:5. The next rack, Ortmann ran all balls and got a bad position for the 9-ball. He missed the 9-ball and left a tough shot for Malai. Both players had another shot on the 9-ball and always left a tough position for the opponent. It was Malai who had the better end here, winning the rack and the match with 9:5.
Other notable results include Darren Appleton (GBR) winning 9:8 over Bruno Muratore (ITA). Denis Grabe (EST) eliminated Sascha Tege (GER) with 9:7. Chris Melling (GBR) ended Stephan Cohen’s (FRANCE) hopes, creaming him 9:6.
Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Murtatore through to Single Elimination
Bruno Muratore - Italy
Chinakhov finished Souquet at Beassy™ 9-Ball World Class Open
Bruno Muratore (ITA) made it to the single elimination stage of the final 32 players in the Beassy™ 9-ball World Class Open. He defeated Albin Ouschan (AUT) in the loser’s qualification round with 9:5.
Muratore had a quick start over Ouschan. He went ahead 6:1 and left no doubt about his desire to make it into the final 32 players’ stage. That was the time when Ouschan got into gear a bit better and managed to close the gap a bit, making the score 6:4. In the 11th rack, Muratore played a marvellous safety shot on the 6-ball that also solved the problem with the 7-bal on the table, leaving a snookered situation for Ouschan. The Austrian tried to hit the 6-ball but fouled. Then Muratore came in and should have run the rack. But he missed an easy 8-ball and left it hanging over the pocket. That was the chance for Ouschan to make it 6:5 and he did. Again, the match did not continue as expected. After Ouschan’s great comeback, there was nothing more coming from him. Muratore played stronger and finished the match 9:5 over Ouschan.
Earlier today in the loser’s bracket, pool’s megastar Ralf Souquet (GER) got eliminated from the event by Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) with 9:7. Four more clashes of top players ended 9:8: Melling (GBR) ousted Petroni (ITA), Buck (GER) eliminated Solymosi (HUN), Stepanov (RUS) finished Sanchez-Ruiz (ESP) and Kojsza (HUN) overcame Stadler (SWE), all with the same tight result. Also on the one-loss side, David Alcaide (ESP) ended all hopes from Nick van den Berg (NED) with 9:5.
The loser’s qualification round matches included Chris Melling (GBR) subduing Dominic Jentsch (GER) 9:3. Karl Boyes (GBR) had to deal with fellow countryman Imran Majid. As the match went along, both players did not think about giving in to their opponent. In the end, it was Boyes who remained victorious and won 9:7 over Majid. Local hero, junior player Bence Varga from Hungary, got ousted by Swedish Andreas Gerwen with 9:8.
Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Appleton creams Varga!
Darren Appleton - Great Britain
Winner’s qualification round came up with a few tight matches
Darren Appleton (GBR) overcame local player Bence Varga (HUN) with 9:6.
Both players performed at a high level. But it would not be fair to say they both kept it throughout the match. While Appleton maintained his high level of play, Varga made some unforced errors and played too aggressive. Instead of playing safety shots, he went for the pocket and missed. That brought Appleton in the pole position. In the 5th rack, the misery started for Varga. Appleton scratched on the break. Varga ran all balls and scratched on his last object ball. That was his first present for Appleton. The second big mistake Varga played in the 13th rack at a score of 7:5 for Appleton. He missed a makeable 6-ball but was lucky since Appleton had a tough position to play from. The Brit in turn left a tough shot for Varga which the young Hungarian player brilliantly pocketed. The score was turned to 6:7, still in favour of Appleton. Then Varga scratched on the break and Appleton ran out to get on the hill. The next rack saw some safety shots exchanged and Appleton came out on top, winning the 15th rack and taking the deserved victory with 9:6.
Another thrilling encounter was the match between Oliver Ortmann (GER) and Marcus Chamat (SWE). Ortmann won by the skin of his teeth with 9:8 over Chamat.
After 13 racks, Ortmann looked like the sure winner, leading 8:5 over Chamat. But the “Napoleon” is a known fighter. He fought his way back into the match and Ortmann played some unforced errors in the final stage of the match. In the 15th and the 16th rack, Ortmann scratched and gave ball-in-hand to Chamat who ran out and made it a hill-hill match. The final rack was started with safety shots by both players. However, it was Marcus Chamat who executed a jump shot and left an open shot for Ortmann who ran the rack to win the match. He is now in the single elimination stage of the event while Chamat needs another victory to join him.
Other notable results include Dimitri Jungo (SUI) winning 9:7 over Sandor Tot (SRB). Mario He, young and uprising star from Austria, just won over Karl Boyes (GBR) with 9:8. Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) defeated Carlo Dalmatin (CRO) with 9:7.
Beassy 9-Ball World Class Open - Diaz-Pizarro defeats Souquet
Francisco Diaz-Pizarro - Spain
The spell of “The Kaiser” was broken
In a close and hard fought match, Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP) defeated “The Kaiser” Ralf Souquet (GER) with 9:7.
In the beginning of the match it looked as “business as usual”. Souquet took a quick 3:0 lead over Diaz and everybody expected “The Kaiser” to leave the battlefield of slate as a winner again. But Diaz had an objection against that. He fought back rack after rack and tied the match at 3:3. Did Souquet expect to meet with such strong resistance? Obviously, he struggled after it. As the match went on, both players could not get a big advantage over the opponent and consequently, the score came to 7:7. It was Diaz to get on the hill first. Maybe that was the small advantage he needed to see that he has got a chance to eliminate Souquet from the winner’s bracket. He ran the final rack and won the match 9:7 and gave Souquet his first defeat this week in Hungary.
Other notable results from the first winner’s round include Sascha Tege (GER) subduing Nick van den Berg (NED) with 9:7. Artem Koshovyi (UKR) just overcame David Alcaide (ESP) with 9:8. Dominik Jentsch (GER) pommeled Christian Reimering (GER) with 9:1. Darren Appleton (GBR) outscored Jayson Shaw (SCO) and took the match with 9:6. Raj Hundal (IND) lost even worse. He fell to the sharp blade of Daryl Peach (GBR) with 9:3. Jani Siekkinen (FIN) managed to come up with a little upset, defeating Chris Melling (GBR) with 9:7.
