Nice to hear JV talking about the "American Pool"

I believe the comment was

"Have to be accurate potting on these tables not like the American pool just hit the ball near the pocket and it goes in"

I never understood why they got rid of Clive Everton. Just cos you've won a world title - or not in the case of Virgo, Thorne et al - doesn't make you a great commentator. Hendry included (in my opinion).

Choice of commentators is always one of the most hotly debated topics - I actually like most of them because they are so knowledgeable... Especially Willie Thorne. Clive was great too - did he lose the job because of politics?

Who would be the best pool commentator?

Silence is Golden.

If you look at the absolute masters of television sports commentary, it wasn't just that they knew when to speak. Just as importantly they knew when not to speak.

Ted Lowe and Jack Karnehm's hushed tones for me any day!

For a Pool commentator I'd love to listen to Earl more! Obviously he would need to be part of a team and not out there on his own as he could go "off topic" quite easily! I think a team of three would be great...

I had a bit more time to think about JV too and his comment. It's typical of successful Snooker players at all levels to look down at AP. Some of them come over and do well and I think I speak for the majority that we respect Snooker and it's best players as it's a difficult game. JV is a joke and didn't need to beat on a game that millions enjoy and should just accept it as a fun game that offers something different! We're not all 147 break players and we don't all want to play for our lives in deathly silence either!

:)

Maybe Earl Strickland as a player commentator, Joe Rogan as a fan and proven media man and a specialist from production, say Justin Collett would be a good trio!

In the Snooker I think that Steve Davis, Clive Everton and Barry Hearn would be an interesting choice.

Quite like listening to UpState Al (Allan Leon) commentating on AZBtv. JV's derogatory comments about AP also frustrate me - like to see how he'd fair on the GB9 tour.

Now there's a fantastic idea...

GB9 should offer him a complimentary single event entry of his choice so that he can show us all how to play in light of his comment! It could be good publicity for the game and a good laugh for us?

:)

I think some people are simply over-sensitive to the fact that he didn't feel the need to qualify his statement by adding how jolly spiffing AP is.

If the quote is correct then I can't see what the beef is, he's right, despite the turn of phrase - a higher degree of accuracy is required to pot balls on a World Championship standard Snooker table than an American Pool table.

Carry on JV!

What a great post Ben!!! Still got it a see

IMO jv is a terrible snooker commentator and very annoying (where's the cue ball going). Never really won anything so should be retired now and let the proper knowlagable players in.
The amount of time when a player is in the balls and he calls the totally wrong shot is beyond me lol

Ben, I think the point is that JV's comment offers a very one sided view of AP. I completely agree that the potting aspect requires a lot more accuracy but it's not the same game and can't really be compared.

Just because Tennis, Squash and Badminton all use a racket and a court, does that mean they're comparable?

I agree Ads, the Sports are not comparible, whether you play them with a racket or a cue. Aspects of Sports are though.

If Sue Barker wanted to highlight fitness and made a comment that Tennis players cover more mileage in a season than Table Tennis players, the statement would surely be correct. Anybody drawing from this that she hates Table Tennis and thinks the game is easy would be mad. If the lovely Ms Barker then followed this up by taking us on a 2 minute journey down Table Tennis Lane, explaining the ins, outs and optimum paddle rubber width for serving, the BBC would be shoeing Tim Henman into her seat quicker than you can say four semi-finals.

I like AP as much as the next guy on here but I think people are reading between the lines on this one.

Ollie, Ads and Benjamin make good points and now that I read back what was said by JV I did over-react! The problem with statements about the pockets in AP unfortunately only further the elitist attitudes of club Snooker players. I've met so many that bash AP and who have never really played it. I joined up to help out a pretty handy Snooker team this year when short in our town league and they all see themselves as superior to the Sky Sports guy and it cracks me up. Of the top 6, only two of them have ever played a rack and I've yet to see a single break/run from either. I'm pretty average really and smashed them both...

:)
