Just 5 hours ago, with only three days to the event, apparently the Pasay Cup, previously known as the Mayor's Cup, has been cancelled, just 3 days before the event was to begin.

Some players are already in the Philippines, Shane van Boening was already on his way having purchased his ticket and had already left Minneapolis and was boarding to Tokyo in 1hour when he got the email saying the event was now cancelled.

Organisers have apologised and explained that, "due to some uncontrolled circumstances and to avoid bigger problems" the event had to be cancelled, although the precise reasons aren't known just yet.

Its an absolute disgrace, people out of pocket buying Airline tickets and Hotels.
Match this with the Cancelled World Ten Ball Championship and you start to see how the Philippines is run,..............day by day

With having been in the Philippines twice now with my wife, I know about the corruption there.

10Ball, Rotation and Side-Side are still the daily money games, but I know 9Ball is still played moderately :)

I saw the notice on Star Paper's fb page shortly after it was published and I couldn't help shake my head in disgust because if the organisers were having problems, they should've had the consideration to let all Int'l players know in advance and offer a full refund flight costs, but sadly this wasn't the case and it just stinks on all levels.

I know that SBC did organise a 2 day DE 10Ball event for that weekend, but prize money was obviously not the same and I think alot of players probably didn't bother showing up to play in it.

Willie

It's definitely as sad turn of events - no one went out to do a bad job here - I think there is always some risk associated with business, and this event was organised by an admittedly new name in the tournament promotion business, but when he announced this event he DID have a successful, prompt, well paid tournament already under his belt.

Working with sponsors can be a delicate & fragile business, and I know from experience that the deal isn't done until the cash is in the bank - no matter what sponsors say.

Ultimately, it's the sponsors who fell through on this organiser, but in a perfect world he would have "shored up" that side of the business first.

If his reputation recovers from this, and I hope it does, as he's a nice guy who just tried and failed this time, and we all know what they say about that, well, hopefully he'll come out of this wiser and stronger and he'll know better next time.

Yes, it happens far too often in this business, and it's incredibly bad timing, as Shane was already on the plane out there when he got the text telling him it was cancelled, but few of these tournaments are being run by professionals, just enthusiasts, trying to do the best job they can. Most times they get a lot right. This time, something seriously important wasn't.

Tournaments like this will always present business risk to the players and the organisers... It's the nature of the beast.

I guess the alternative is to have something like the IPT or the EPBF roll out a well run, worldwide tour - it would be brilliantly organised, professional, and really great for the sport.

At the same time, I wouldn't want to lose these exotic and colourful independent events either - would you?
