Hi Guys,

Seen on here a few times where people talk about giving weight or giving the 6 etc.

Can some one please explain to me in a bit more detail what this is and what options or other choices are available at 9 ball.

We play in a mini league and want to try and handicap it slightly differently. Already have a few players starting off a minus figure but wanting to know what else can be done.

Cheers

Dean

Giving the 6 means that the 6 ball is an extra 9 ball - an extra ball you can pot to win the game

Usually if the extra ball (called 'spotted' ball) goes down on the break it gets re-spotted - hence the name. You can also have the start where the ball counts on the break, known as 'spotting the wild 6'

I've been playing a bit in Orlando where they give balls. For example, I played Shanelle Loraine and had ti give her last 5. This means that as soon as there are 5 or less balls remaining on the table, she only has to pot one to win...tough game lol. I won hill hill though. First time ever seen this sort of handicapping but very popular over there.

I think the apa leagues, in america, give points for each ball potted (1-8 worth 1 point each & the 9 worth 2 points) and you aim for a predetermined score (dependent on your handicap)to win the rack. Details that make more sense might be available on the apa website.

It's what Andy said, but there are different variations. Another way to play this is to determine the lowest ball that the lesser player requires to win. So if you give the 6 then 7,8 and 9 are also winning balls. In this system no balls are respotted

imho the only hcap system that makes sense is to give a start in racks

in a race to 21 there are a lot of ways 2 give start! Here are 20 of the most obvious:
giv ur opponent 1 to 21
giv ur opponent 2 to 21
giv ur opponent 3 to 21
giv ur opponent 4 to 21
giv ur opponent 5 to 21
giv ur opponent 6 to 21
giv ur opponent 7 to 21
giv ur opponent 8 to 21
giv ur opponent 9 to 21
giv ur opponent 10 to 21
giv ur opponent 11 to 21
giv ur opponent 12 to 21
giv ur opponent 13 to 21
giv ur opponent 14 to 21
giv ur opponent 15 to 21
giv ur opponent 16 to 21
giv ur opponent 17 to 21
giv ur opponent 18 to 21
giv ur opponent 19 to 21
giv ur opponent 20 to 21

There's a handicap system adopted in Mile End club comp whereby you give 'balls'. So if a player with a HC of -2 plays someone with a scratch (0) HC, they are giving them 2 balls in every rack. This means once the 6-ball is down, their opponent may choose to shoot straight for the 9-ball or continue onto the 7-ball or even the 8-ball should they wish before depositing the 9-ball.

The maximum difference using this system can be 6 (1-2-9), with anything over being an additional rack start for the opponent.

This makes it quite tough for the player giving the balls as they would then have to play safe on two balls should all the non-handicap balls be potted.
