Just wondered cos when I played on diamond table in wakey previously..can't remember any balls going down rail like I've seen on the tv. Wasn't sure if there's different size cut' or if there's just standard size for that table..

They look tight, just the heat must make it easier than it looks. Doesnt advertise American Pool very well but cant be playing on 3.75" pockets to compensate either :(

Like at match room says they're 4.5" but like Barry says, new cloth/conditions in there will play a factor...

Agree though not a good ad for American pool...

I've only ever played on a Diamond once and it never ended well!

:)

Some of the balls going in on TV leads me to believe that it's all about the heat and lighting on that table. Also, the new cloth no doubt plays a part...

If they had harder pocket facings that would also tighten them up down the rails, or 860 cloth on the rails

Brand new cloth and balls is a massive factor... They just slide in even on tight pockets... The table I used to practise on had 4.25" bags and with brand new simonis they felt massive, if the mosconi table had been played on for a while it would play more like a 'normal' diamond but obv they can't use an old table for a tv tournament.

The long (I thing it was a 5) ball that SVB knocked in wouldnt have troubled the jaws at Vegas Bar on the diamond. Makes the game look far too easy when balls go in on the telly like that.

For me the pockets are playing ok. I don't want to watch Snooker style run outs on a 9ft, banks being low percentage and safeties/escapes having little or no pressure. Just my opinion, I know I'm in a minority.

I've always thought this myself...

Agree to a certain extent, but it makes the game look bad dont you think? Imagine someone whos never played watching, what are they thinking?

I dont think they should be super tight, thats not what the games all about. Just make it possible to miss! haha

I can't remember exactly what my thoughts were but I'd never played the game when I first started watching the Mosconi and World Champs on Sky but I know I was (*ahem*) hooked, and the pocket generosity has been reduced dramatically since then. What new viewers don't have now is seeing a White or Davis being beaten by guys that apparently can't find the heart of the pocket, they added credibility. If new viewers are comparing American Pool to Snooker now (which of course they will), making the pots tougher will just increase the amount of negative shots because they will become the right shot. I don't think Willie Mosconi would want his name associated with an annual dump shot contest. I'll reiterate, it's just my opinion as a fan and I know I'm in a minority.

Totally see what your saying Ben. Personally though I think slightly tighter bags is the way forward for the sport as a whole.

I think I'm with Ben on this, the tighter the pockets get the more negative shots get played and the less exciting. Obviously don't go as bad as when Alex won the world champs, that was crazy, but 4.5" is fine. I doubt you'd hve ever seen the NvdB jump shot even attempted on a table with incredibly tight bags. 4.5" on a worn in table is fine but I think for the Mosconi Cup they need to be playing on 4" pockets because of the generous playing conditions. The Europeans this year have been better positionally and would have missed a lot less balls than the Americans had they used a tighter pocket.

Couldnt agree more with Ben. Pockets arent meant to be tight. you cant go to 4" pockets, its the not the game I used to love watching!

if 4" then ok solves the problem down the rail but they are then too tight for open shots imo. Even on that diamond table they are playing on some proper 9 ball shots are just not possible. Takes the creativity and excitment out of the game.

Again probably in the minority but just how i see it.

I have to agree with Mark here. Easy pockets don't promote the game at all ... and I think making the game more watchable is crucial. imho the rule should be : if the ball doesn't hit the inside of the pocket it shouldn't go in. There were shots this year that went in without even being close to the jaws and that just makes the game look like ... a game rather than a sport if you know what I mean. btw I think the speed of the cloth contributes to this, cause the players don't need to play with pace to screw back three quarters of the table for example.
