Main differences from 9 ball:
- Call the ball and pocket if it's not obvious. You don't need to call the path the ball will take - just the ball and pocket. Combination shots, Masse, Bank, Jump shots, Caroms etc are all considered to be not obvious and generally should always be called. In the case of a dispute referees will use common sense.
- Rack the 1 on the spot - no 3 point rule
- 3 foul rule applies and deliberate fouls are allowed - same as 9 ball
- Potting the 10 wins the game and this can be from a combination shot e.g. 3 ball on to 10 ball but it must be called.
- If a legal shot is played but the called ball is pocketed in a different pocket its loss of turn (no foul) and the incoming player has play or pass option.
- If a legal shot is played and the called ball is NOT pocketed but another ball IS pocketed its loss of turn (no foul) and the incoming player has play or pass option.
- If the called ball is pocketed in a legal shot and any other ball is pocketed in the same shot all balls stay down (unless its the 10 ball - see below) and play continues with the shooter.
- If the 10 ball is pocketed in a legal shot without it being called it is respotted (no foul). If this was part of a shot where the called ball was pocketed play continues with the shooter otherwise its loss of turn and the incoming player has play or pass option.
- There is no need for or advantage to be gained by calling 'safety' at 10 ball. In 8 ball this can be advantageous because you could deliberately pot a ball after calling safety and walk away from the table leaving your opponent obliged to shoot next. However, in 10 ball your opponent would have the play or pass option as mentioned above so there is nothing to be gained by calling safety.
- Tip - When kicking out of a snooker if there is a chance the object ball may get kicked into a particular pocket you may as well call that pocket (just in case you get lucky!).
If anyone else can think of any additions to the above or has any questions let me know as your questions will help me put a useful guide together prior to the event.
