I've put some "feelers" out in the hope that they will elicit some answers to the Mosconi questions you proposed.
Regarding the two tables - when comparing them, although I think both designs are peerless, personally, I think Brunswick Gold Crown tables are slightly better designed and constructed than the Diamonds.
The Gold Crown has low profile pocket tops that do not obstruct hand placement or cue sighting, and although the leather pockets of the Diamond are a really classy and stylish touch, winning over Brunswicks more plain design, they DO leave nasty black marks on cueballs and cue shafts which is unforgiveable, and owners need to specially treat the pockets with an aftermarket product to avoid this.
When you strip each of the tables down, take the slates off and really get to the nitty gritty, the Brunswick foundations are a solid wood, simple design, strong dovetail joinery with large metal bolts, and it's plain to see they are sturdily designed and constructed.
When you strip a Diamond table down it's ugly to say the least, with complex steel cabling reinforcing the structural integrity. Nothing wrong with that, but name one other table made with cables. You can't see the cables as they are concealed by beautiful wood cladding, but knowing they are there subconsciously displeases me. It just seems wrong. (I'm trying to "Google" an image showing these criss-crossing cables, maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but I can't find a cutaway photo of the Smart Table).
It's probably a continental thing... We like houses made from brick, whereas Americans are happy with steel frame construction.
Having said all this, you may think I'm being negative about the Diamond table... I am not... I would be equally happy to have either table. They are both brilliant, and I'm just nit-picking.
Brunswick seem to have dried up on the sponsorship front after years of supporting pool, and that will play a huge part in table selection for the big televised events, and we should always put our money in the pockets of the companies who are currently re-investing in our sport.
These are just my personal preferences and opinions... I could be wrong, and everyone else is perfectly entitled to their own thoughts on this subject.
