Get in touch with predator in the US as I have broken 2 of their break cues and they have replaced them as I believe they have a lifetime guarantee. Its also where I have my tips done too. Very good customer service! Hope this helps?

Problem is it looks like the black pad has been removed and it no longer has a phenolic tip. This means you have voided the guarantee.

I think it must be something to do with the phenolic tip aswell.

think it acts like a shock absorber between tip and ferrule

don't think its important on a playing cue, unless you break with it.

You have to leave at least 1mm of phenolic tip so if you want a leather tip on your BK2 you have to file it down with a lathe leaving at least 1mm of the tip and a nice flat surface to mount your leather tip.

Any less and it will split the ferrule and even part of the wood.

Does that mean that the BK2 shafts are poorly made if you have to leave an old tip on to avoid breakage? Or is this common on all Break cues?

Im thinking of having a shaft made so I'd like to know so I don't have a dud made for me :)

I always break as hard as I can with my playing cue which has a 314 2 and have done for around 2 years and it has not broken.

The BK2 was just made that way and it expressly states in the little leaflet that comes with the cue that you should not remove the black pad and to leave at least 1mm of the tip any less and you void the warranty. Predator made it in a way they consider (or in a scientific way, as they would like to say) to be to the ultimate construction for breaking, therefore why would you want to change it?

I understand why you would want to change it but they have to sick with there guns in not compromising its breaking capabilities. If they left tip changing options it would undermine there marketing, which may or may not be sincere.

A good comparison would be Apple. They refuse to make iPad/iPhone covers themselves as this in some way would be a concession to what they believe is a ultimate design. Despite the market being worth millions. They make them that way and want them to be used that way.

Just buy a sneaky pete with a standard 314 2 if you want a leather tip breaking cue. Or if you and going to soft break don't even bother with a break cue.

I want a cue where I can get maximum power transfer with minimal deflection so BK2 technology is perfect. I'm not great on knowledge of what makes a good break cue so thats why I asked the question.

I've used my playing cue before but its only a 12.25mm soft tip so its not the best to break with :)

I like the analogy with apple, makes a lot of sense what you are saying
