As there's no entry list on the first post and not much comment I fear this isn't going to get the 16 runners. So unfortunately I can't justify the 320 mile round trip. Please remove me from the list.

Disappointments like this are why there should be payment in advance for comps. That's just my humble opinion...

Also take some ownership, if Tony is organising the comp but is away you should be taking charge as it is your club the event is held at.

You need to start being assertive and say "This is the comp, this is the date, this is the format, like it or lump it". Don't go around the houses get straight to the point. If people like it, they will enter!

Phil Wildman used to ask everybody what their feedback was and got nowhere but look at him now. He sets the format and gets great numbers at every comp. That's what you need to do because you have good ideas but poor execution/lack of care.

Your points are noted.
But I find if you continue to batter people with comps giving the hard sell all the time, people just get cheesed off.
We don't only do 9 ball here, we have 8 English pool tables, 3 dartboards and a 60 man poker to run as well, all have their own money leagues and numerous one day comps, which all have very good attendances.
The 9 ball appears to be a bit of a closed shop in that players don't like too much change, they appear to be a bit set in their ways.
Our locality maybe a problem because not many people know where Braintree is exactly, whereas st Albans is very well positioned.
I'm told by many top players who've played at Legends that our tables play very well, reclothed regularly and cleaned everyday, comps are always on free play as well.
As for keeping up with comps it's not that hard with today's technology, I had always intended to bring this comp back into sight on Tuesday when I returned, a lot of people don't like to commit to the last minute, they may have work or partner commitments.
As for getting full payments in advance well that's a laugh, yes you get some who committ fully but again the majority pay on the day or a few days beforehand because of other commitments. It goes on all the time people pull out of comps at the last minute for whatever reason, most of time it's because the partners don't want the players out enjoying yourselves without them, and they don't wanna be stuck in a pool hall all day. Like I say your points are noted and I hope you understand why I do things the way I do. Yes it would great if our 9 ball comps were met with the same interest as our other pool comps.
But in the end it's the players that make a great comp by supporting it fully. A good venue helps in encouraging people to come back and the organiser has to have the patience of a saint. By the look of the responses to date this will not go ahead, which is a shame, only looking back on some of the early responses from Ireland it looked quiet promising although I messaged some personally we got no replies. A bit like the 8 ball pool festival in nov in Ireland yet again no replies whatsoever and I wanna enter with about another 10 players interested, but hey let's not lose any sleep over it.
It's only a game of pool.

Thanks for the reply I do see your points I really do. Every comp I've ran bar one has been pay in advance and I've had at worst 16 entries (although I can't say worst as I limited to 16) but at best I had 33 paid in advance and 7 on the day.

I don't quite know what you mean by constant hard selling. Can you explain what you mean exactly?

I try to advertise my comps 6-8 weeks in advance so that people have more than enough time to make arrangements. So far on the whole, that has worked out well for me, but as you make comment to central/easy travel locations make it easier for people to be willing to attend.

What I mean by hard selling, is constantly battering people to play in comps, like I say we've got other sports going on all the time and maybe because of those successes we don't just concentrate on 9 ball as much, which we all enjoy playing but it still comes second best to 8 ball. I used to advertise comps a lot earlier but got let down too many times.
I shall see what happens today/tomorrow morning then decide on comp if I don't get at least 8 players then it's off.
I'm better off renting the tables out as normal and earning some dough rather than losing it in comps. Lol.
