US OPEN 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD FULL AT 256

he 256-player field for the 2020 US Open 9-Ball Championship is now full, with over seven months still to go before the event takes place at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center, Las Vegas.

In addition, players can still enter Official Qualifying Events to win their place in the field for the $375,000 event, which takes place April 13-18 2020.

Emily Frazer, COO of Matchroom Multi Sport, said: “As anticipated, we have set an all-time record and sold out the 256 player US Open 9-ball Championship field in just 17 days. With 40 players already on the waiting list, this event is in huge demand.

“$375,000 prize money, 256 players, staged at the iconic Mandalay Bay Resort, full TV production broadcast to over 100 countries worldwide – the sheer coverage that players receive from participating in a Matchroom event has now increased tenfold. The adrenalin of playing among the best-of-the-best in a 33-table arena; coupled with the hope and determination of making it to the last-16 must be fiercely set in the sights of all the players who have signed up.

“It’s our second year taking on the US Open 9-Ball; with just over seven months to go, we can now turn our attention to the event specifics and spectators – this event will be impressive, fun and full!”

Brady Behrman and Shannon Paschall added: “We knew and trusted that the only way for pool to elevate and the US Open to continue to grow was through the eyes of Matchroom Sport. Our father and founder, Barry Behrman, is the happiest man in heaven. The field being full with 256 players from around the world, the largest prize fund ever and eight months ahead of time is a grand testament to the hard work that Matchroom puts in to ensure the very best for players, fans and the entire industry.” Promoted by Matchroom Multi Sport, the 2020 US Open 9-Ball Championship will take place from April 13-18 at Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas. Boasting a $375,000 prize fund, players will battle it out over three days of double elimination in the 33-table Diamond Arena until the last 16 players are left standing. From there, the action moves to single elimination and onto the global TV stage as the remaining 16 compete to become US Open 9-Ball Champion. The double elimination draw will be made in the spring.

Spectator tickets will go on sale to Matchroom Pool Club members on Friday, September 13 and general sale on Monday, September 16 with full selling details to be announced shortly.

HALF OF US OPEN 9-BALL FIELD FILLS IN THREE DAYS

Just three days after player entries opened, the field for the 2020 US Open 9-Ball Championship has already surpassed the halfway mark ahead of the return of the pool major to Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center next April 13-18.

The $375,000 tournament is limited to 256 entrants and already over 115 players have entered already, with 30 places reserved for the ever-growing list of events on the US Open 9-Ball Championship Global Qualifying Series.

Among the early entries is defending champion Joshua Filler and American icons Shane van Boening and Earl Strickland, who share the record for having won five US Open 9-Ball titles. A full list of entrants can be found at: http://www.matchroompool.com/usopen9ball/#players

The first event on the Global Qualifying Series takes place August 25-26 at Sam's Billiards, Portland, Oregon. Over 30 spots are already reserved for winners of qualifying events, with more set to be confirmed soon.

Emily Frazer, COO of Matchroom Multi Sport, said: “Eight months until the US Open 9-Bxall Championship and we have already secured half the field, a phenomenal record that we fully anticipated to break. These players are smart, and their eagerness will pay off as we all watch this event sell out before the end of 2019.

“There are a lot of names on our list that didn’t participate earlier this year which shows the magnitude of the event globally and that players are keen to not miss out. We are inundated with requests for organisers holding qualifiers and we will have to get to a point where we turn these down. Players will soon be fighting for their US Open spot.

“Seeing this level of demand only sets our sights higher on a 512-player field in the foreseeable future.”

Player entries for the 2020 Open 9-Ball Championship are open now at www.matchroompool.com. Player entry fees remain at $1,000 and former champions receive free entry to the event. After sold-out crowds, record TV ratings and a full field of 256 players for the 2019 US Open 9-Ball Championship, players are encouraged to enter the 2020 Championship early to avoid disappointment.

Prize money payouts will start from 97th place, with players reaching this stage receiving $1,000. Those who successfully progress from the double elimination stage will earn at least $5,000 with quarter-finalists taking home $7,750, semi-finalists earning $15,000 and the runner-up to be paid $30,000.

Spectator tickets for the 2020 US Open 9-Ball Championship will go on sale on Friday, September 13th with full details including pricing to be announced shortly.

OUSCHAN AND FILLER LEAD FEMALE ENTRIES TO US OPEN 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Women’s Eurotour stars Jasmin Ouschan and Pia Filler are the first two female players to have entered the 2020 US Open 9-Ball Championship, which will take place at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center from April 13-18.

Ouschan recently won her 17th Eurotour title at the Predator Women’s Veldhoven Open and is no stranger to the Matchroom Pool TV stage having previously represented Austria at the World Cup of Pool.

Filler was in husband Joshua’s corner as he landed his first US Open 9-Ball Championship success in April and such was the magnitude of the event she knew she had to take part in 2020.

“It will be amazing to participate in the biggest pool event in the world and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Filler. “It is going to be a great experience for my career and it will help me to improve and develop my game.

“The US Open was definitely the best event of 2019 so far but everybody who knows the Matchroom crew knows it’s going to be even better and bigger in 2020! Chen Siming performed really well in this year’s US Open and she showed the whole world that women can! This should be a good motivation to all the female players out there to train hard and show it to everybody.

“If female players start to participate in big events such as the US Open we can show everybody how good we can play it could be a new era for women’s pool.”

Emily Frazer, COO of Matchroom Multi Sport, said: “It’s a great standpoint to already have world-class female players like Pia Filler and Jasmin Ouschan excited and registered for the US Open 2020.

“Just four women participated in the event earlier this year but Siming Chen showed an impressive journey throughout - giving women the inspiration to enter in what is the biggest and most prestigious multi-table event in pool industry. Both Kelly Fisher and Han Yu earned their place in the World Pool Masters this March with close and tense matches; it’s time that women competed among men in these global events and there is no greater fulfilment than seeing the confidence shine through from the likes of Ouschan and Filler.

“It’s race to 11, winner breaks, 40-second shot clock and a tough grind; who says female players don’t have a chance to go far in this event? Let’s hope this sparks more women to register because the 256 field will sell out, I guarantee that!”

FORMER CHAMPIONS FIRST TO ENTER 2020 US OPEN 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

A host of former US Open 9-Ball Champions are among the first players to have entered the 2020 event, which will take place at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center from April 13-18.

Germany’s Joshua Filler will bid to become only the fifth player to successfully defend the prestigious title. The World No.1 was imperious as he won the Barry Behrman Trophy for the first time in Vegas in April and if he takes his 2019 form into 2020 will undoubtedly be one of the favourites again.

The $375,000 event offers free entry to all previous champions and American greats like Earl Strickland and Shane van Boening have already signed up. The pair share the record for having won five US Open 9-Ball titles and will be joined in Vegas by fellow American former champions Jeremy Jones, Corey Deuel, Gabe Owen and John Schmidt, who recently ran 626 balls to break Willie Mosconi’s 526 record.

Jayson Shaw lifted the trophy in 2017 and will look to win it back next year, while his fellow Brit Darren Appleton will be on the hunt for his third US Open 9-Ball success. Finland’s Mika Immonen completes the list of European former champions who will compete at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino next April.

Alex Pagulayan reached the quarter-finals of this year’s US Open 9-Ball and will have his eyes set on another deep run in 2020, while Kevin Cheng has also confirmed his place as he hunts for a second title.
