Preview: 2015 GB9 Paul Medati Trophy, the Rasson Billiards Pro Cup & Challenge Cup

The 7th tournament in memory of the late Paul Medati will be contested this coming weekend at the fabulous Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Telford, Shropshire.

Whilst all GB9 main events carry the same number of ranking points to players, there are a number who consider this as the most prestigious tournament in the GB9 calendar. Being first contested in 2009 after Paul’s untimely passing, the tournament offers players and fans alike the chance to remember one of the most loved and talented players on tour. Paul’s loss still lays heavy in the mind of those who played both alongside and against him, and this is sure to bring out the best in those determined to win the tournament in his memory.

The tournament weekend also incorporates the second Rasson Billiards Pro Cup of the season and the third Mark Lovell Challenge Cup competition. After Mark passed away late in 2011, GB9 wanted to honour Mark’s memory on tour in a similar manner to that of Paul Medati. With both players being amongst the most respected during their times on tour, it was felt right that the two competitions would take place on the same weekend. The inaugural tournament, won by Courtney Symons in 2012, is now running alongside the Paul Medati Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

GB9 ON THE TV!

In a first for the GB 9 Ball Tour, coverage from the Paul Medati Trophy will be broadcast on the brand new Big Centre TV channel on Freeview. The channel is available to Midlands viewers in England on Freeview channel 8 and also to viewers online. Big Centre TV will be showing coverage from all stages of Saturday’s play in the main event - details of broadcast dates from these matches will be available after the tournament.

Speaking of the development, GB9 chairperson Andy Warden was delighted to welcome Big Centre TV on board as a GB9 partner. “We are very grateful to Big Centre TV for giving us the opportunity to showcase the GB 9 Ball Tour to a much wider audience through their Freeview TV channel”, he said. “Hopefully this will translate to more players becoming interested in the game and getting involved in future events.”

Gary James, Head of Sport at Big Centre TV, was excited to commence work with the tour. “It would be fantastic to showcase some world class 9-ball pool on our channel”, he said. “We have already shown some local darts and had a great reaction locally, so this event will add nicely to our sports output.”

The tournament runs from the afternoon of Friday 1st May with play continuing throughout the weekend until the evening of Sunday 3rd May. Spectators are welcome and attendance is free as ever – you might get yourselves on TV on Saturday! For those unable to attend, the innovative GB9-Live scoring will be in operation alongside the fantastic free Live streaming . Another scintillating weekend’s pool is guaranteed in memory of both Paul and Mark – we hope you can be a part of it.

If you wish to enter the event and haven’t yet done so, entry closes at midnight on Tuesday 28th April. Fill in the event entry form without delay.
