The Grand Final of Baltic Pool League 2014

The Baltic Pool League 2014 drew to a conclusion this weekend in Riga, Latvia. Once again the kind host was Bams Pool House with 12 brand new Dino Sport Pro tables with very tight pockets and Strachan cloth. It was only 32 best ranked men and 16 best ranked women and oldboys athletes allowed to participate in the final. In the game of 10-ball the hot favourite Estonian Denis Grabe did not let his fans down in men's division and in women's and oldboy's division the final was all about local hero Ojars Blezurs.

Denis Grabe back at the top

This years men's division final was suprisingly dominated by Estonians as three of the four top spots were taken by them. After last years third place finish Denis Grabe surely wanted to regain the title of the best pool player in the Baltics and he did that with style.

In the final he was better of the recent World Junior Championships bronze medalist Pijus Labutis from Lithuania. Probably jetlag or emotional tiredness of young Labutis made the match quite one sided rather than the expected nail-biter as Grabe cruised to a comfortable 10:4 victory. It was Grabe's good friend Raimo Teesaar (Estonia) that came closest to overcoming Grabe when he managed to reach 7:7 in the semi-final only to miss a ten ball to go up 8:7. After the miss it was Grabe's superiority that made the score 10:7. Another bronze medalist was Estonian Joonas Saska. A semi-final including unusually many mistakes Labutis was the one that finally got himself together and a spot in the final with a score 10:5 was the reality.

Ojars Blezurs dominated the womens and oldboys division

It was long anticipated when one of the oldboys wins an event. However nobody thought that it would be the most prestigious stage of the league. Local hero Ojars Blezurs was second to none in the final when he went 7:0 up and won it 8:2 leaving Agné Jaruśauskaite (Lithuania) on the second place with her first final of the season. In all Lithuanian semi-final Jaruśauskaite was better of Simona Miliśauskaite 8:5 and in all Latvian semi-final Blezurs ended with a score 8:6 a magnificent run of Anna Prisjaźnuka. Blezurs not only denied her to be the first player in the league to make a hat-trick, but he ended her incredible achievement to reach each final of the season.

Another unbelievably great season

After another successful season the organisers are very happy with the outcome. Each stage had more than 80 athletes from so many different countries, including Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Sweden and England. According to the organizers it is the best recognition to their hard work to see that many athletes from so many countries to come and give their best in the competition. It is unbelievable that during the four year history of the Baltic Pool League it is only few events that had less than 80 players and the independent league is getting more and more attention all over the world. A deep bow goes out to each and everyone having even a little stake in the success of the league and a special gratitude to the sponsors that have been very kind to support the each stage throughout the season.

The event was sponsored throughout the season by Strachan, Mezz Cues, Biljardai, Kamui, Aveiras, Entry, Baribal Pool Club, Bams Pool House, True Tight Rack and many volunteers. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
