Boyes wins Weert Open Qualifier!

A quality field was on show at Rileys Stretford for the first Cuesport UK Eurotour satellite qualifier, the format was double elimination and all matches a race to 7.

In earlier matches on the winners side James Kay had a tough match against former Snooker Legend Paul Medati, Paul was playing his first competitive match in seven months after suffering a trapped nerve so it was good to see him back in action although on the day James Kay was too good beating Medati 7-4, James then went on to beat new young hopeful Brenden Leigh from Derbyshire 7-2.

Click on "Read More..." for the details.

Stuart Colclough also made it through to the next round on the winners side by beatin yours truly Mark Mills 7-4 although if I had not choked an easy 8-Ball at 4-4 things could have been different, at the same stage Stockports Geoff Edge beat fellow Stockport player Neil Jenkins 7-4.

Edge commented after that he prefers playing people he knows and plays with more confidence against them, Karl Boyes fresh from returning from the IPT event in Las Vegas saw off Brett Armer 7-2.

Winners Semi-Finals saw James Kay take on practice partner Stuart Colclough on this occasion Kay won 7-2, as did Karl Boyes against Geoff Edge so the final game on the winners side saw Boyes playing Kay and there was not a lot between them until Boyes got away from him at 6-6 to win 9-7 so Karl Boyes would was through to the final.

In the losers section Paul Medati edge out Brett Armer in a nip and tuck game 7 racks to 6, Medati then went on to put out Neil Jenkins 7-3, Mark Mills saw off Anthony Corbett 7-4 then beat Brenden Leigh by the same score 7-4, Mills would then face bogey player Geoff edge and Edge continued that hold beating Mills 7-4 to face Stuart Colclough in the next game, Colclough was just to strong on the day beating Edge 7 racks to 2, so it was Kay versus Colclough 2, and again it was the same result with Kay coming out the winner this time the score was closer at 7-5.

So it was Karl Boyes versus James Kay in the first ever Cuesport event a quality to grace any event it has to be said, Kay would have to win twice to win the Eurotour spot with hotel and flights to Weert in the Netherlands they had met earlier with Boyes winning that one 9-6 but in the final Boyes struggled to find his form going behind 5-0 before getting a rack on the board but to no avail as he lost that one 7-1, which at that point you could not back against Kay as he was spotting them off the lamp shades but as the saying goes you never get two games alike and that was evident as Boyes took control of the deciding set to run out a 7-3 winner and take the honours with a paid up spot in Weert on September 21st and flight and hotel.

All players at this event said it was a great tournament and look forward to more in the future not only for the Eurotour but many other events, A big thanks to Lynette Horsburgh who helped me run this event whilst I was taking part.
