JOHANN CHUA CROWNED KING OF HANOI

Johann Chua has been crowned the 2024 Mansion Sports Hanoi Open Pool Champion, triumphing over the 'Filipino Slayer,' Ko Pin Yi, in a thrilling final at the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium, set in the vibrant city of Hanoi.

Returning for its second edition, this highly anticipated Hanoi Open Pool Championship is presented in partnership with leading sports investment firm Mansion Sports & Entertainment Group and renowned broadcaster Vietcontent.

Final Result
Johann Chua 13-7 Ko Pin Yi

Nerves were apparent from the start, as both Ko Pin Yi and Johann Chua struggled to settle into their rhythm. Despite missing the 3-ball and 7-ball early on, Ko redeemed himself with a crucial safety to claim the first rack.

After a shaky start, Chua quickly found his form in the second rack, seizing control after Ko left the 6-ball hanging for an easy sweep. This sparked Chua’s momentum, and "Bad Koi" went on to string together four consecutive racks, showcasing his sharp safety play and precise jump shots.

A dry break in the sixth rack allowed Ko back to the table, where he fluked a 1-9 combo to cut Chua's lead. Ko then tried to keep the pressure on by hooking Chua on the 5-ball, but Chua responded with a fierce jump shot, regaining control and extending his lead to 7-2.

The tenth rack saw a shift when Chua hooked himself on the 2-ball, giving Ko a chance to claim two racks in a row. However, Ko’s attempt to close the gap faltered in the twelfth rack when he scratched on the 3-ball, handing Chua another rack.

A miss on the 2-ball in the thirteenth rack seemed to turn the tide in Ko’s favor as he narrowed the deficit further, pulling off a 3-9 combo to bring the score to 8-7. Just one rack away from levelling the match, Ko fouled on the 2-ball in the next rack, giving Chua breathing room to extend his lead to 9-7.

Despite Ko’s effort to close the gap again after Chua missed the 6-ball, he missed a crucial 9-ball that could have brought him back into contention. Chua capitalised, reaching the hill at 10-7.

With the final break, Chua cleared the table once more, securing the final rack and his first Matchroom Major title. His triumph in Hanoi not only crowns him the new king of Hanoi, but also completes a remarkable journey—from the World Championship semifinals to the European Open final, and now the prestigious Hanoi Open title and Reyes Cup qualification. Johann Chua has undoubtedly enjoyed one of the best runs on the World Nineball Tour this year.

Ko Pin Yi and Jefrey Roda had previously clashed in the final of the inaugural RASSON Luschan Open earlier this year, where Ko narrowly edged out a hill-hill victory, foreshadowing their semifinal rematch in Hanoi.

While Roda started strong, winning the lag and the first rack, a devastating scratch on his break in the second rack gave Ko the opening he needed. Ko quickly surged ahead, stringing together racks and finishing with a well-executed 6-8-9 combo to establish a commanding 8-1 lead.

Roda capitalised on a foul by Ko in the tenth rack to snatch a second point, but Ko soon regained control and ran up the racks to reach the hill. Roda had one last chance after Ko missed on the 2-ball, but nerves got the better of the Filipino, leading to a critical miss on the 4-ball. Ko swiftly returned to the table, clinching the final rack to secure his place in the final. Nicknamed by Vietnamese fans as "Dũng sĩ diệt Phil" (the Filipino slayer), Ko Pin Yi now advances to face Johann Chua for one last test to live up to his title.

Johann Chua's semifinal match against fellow Filipino Carlo Biado began as a tightly contested affair. Both players traded racks, capitalising on each other's mistakes to keep the match level early on. Biado managed to take a two-rack lead, but ‘Bad Koi’ Chua found his rhythm in the seventh rack, sinking the 2-ball along the rail to spark a five-rack run, pushing him ahead 7-5.

In rack 12, Chua’s positional error allowed Biado to take another rack, but Chua quickly fought back. After Biado left the 6-ball hanging, Chua pounced to reclaim the lead, eventually reaching the hill. Chua's final break was flawless, leaving a clear roadmap for him to run out the table and book his spot in his second Matchroom Major final of the year.

The Reyes Cup teammates Ko Pin Yi and Johann Chua will meet in the 2024 Mansion Sports Hanoi Open final today at 6:30pm (ICT), in what promises to be an electrifying showdown.

SHAW'S REIGN ENDS AS ALL-ASIAN SEMIFINAL LINEUP SET

Jayson Shaw’s reign as Hanoi Open champion came to a dramatic conclusion after a hill-hill duel with Ko Pin Yi, who joins Johann Chua, Jefrey Roda, and Carlo Biado in the semifinals of the 2024 Mansion Sports Hanoi Open.

Returning for its second edition at the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium, the highly anticipated Hanoi Open Pool Championship is presented in partnership with leading sports investment firm Mansion Sports & Entertainment Group and renowned broadcaster Vietcontent.

The defending champion Jayson Shaw faced off against Edward Koyongian in a fierce back-and-forth battle, narrowly edging out the Indonesian cueist 10-7. With this hard-fought win, Shaw advanced to the quarterfinals, where he met his Reyes Cup rival, Ko Pin Yi, who had stopped Shaw’s Team Europe teammate, David Alcaide in the previous round.

Shaw started strong in the quarterfinal, showcasing his skillset with a 3-9 carom jump shot and a 1-9 combo to race ahead 4-0. However, Ko capitalised on Shaw’s mistakes, including a scratch in rack 7 and a missed 8-ball in rack 10, closing the gap to 6-6. The defending champion then rallied to claim three consecutive racks, reaching the hill at 9-6. But Shaw’s hopes of securing the final rack faltered when he missed a 1-ball, allowing Ko to fight back and level the score. In a gripping hill-hill finish, Ko Pin Yi seized the final rack, knocking Shaw out and ending his bid to defend the Hanoi crown.

Joining his Team Asia compatriot in the semifinals, Johann Chua was the first player to secure his spot tomorrow. Chua began his day with a commanding 10-3 victory over fellow Filipino Jefrey Ignacio. His quarterfinal match saw him seeking revenge against Albania's Kledio Kaçi, who had defeated Chua’s World Cup of Pool champion teammate, James Aranas, 10-8 in the Last 16.

The quarterfinal turned into a gruelling affair as Chua engaged in a tight rack exchange to disrupt Kaçi’s momentum. ‘Bad Koi’ Chua reached the hill first at 9-6, but a failed safety on the 2-ball gave Kaçi one last opportunity to mount a comeback. However, a costly scratch after potting the 7-ball sealed Kaçi’s fate, allowing Chua to close out the match and advance to his third Matchroom Major semifinal of 2024.

Hanoi Open qualifier Harry Vergara stunned fans in the Last 16 with a dramatic victory over five-time US Open champion Shane Van Boening. Vergara sealed the 10-7 win in thrilling fashion, delivering a golden break in the final rack. However, his run ended in the quarterfinals, as Jefrey Roda edged him out with a hard-fought 10-8 victory, securing Roda’s first-ever spot in a Matchroom Major semifinal.

Carlo Biado also impressed fans with a remarkable comeback in his Last 16 match against Ko Ping Chung. Trailing 7-2, Biado mounted a stunning rally, winning eight consecutive racks to claim a spot in the quarterfinals. There, Biado faced Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in a clash between former world champions, after Sanchez Ruiz had ended Skyler Woodward’s hopes of taking the Hanoi crown. Biado maintained his strong form, racing to a five-rack lead and securing his place in the semifinal with a 3-9 combo.

With Carlo Biado, Johann Chua, Ko Pin Yi, and Jefrey Roda all advancing, the Mansion Sports Hanoi Open semifinal lineup boasts an elite all-Asian cast. This promises to be an unforgettable showdown.
