Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS)

Chinakhov wins his first Euro-Tour

After a dramatic final match, Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) raised the trophy in the air at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands tonight.

Chinakhov never had a victory at the Euro-Tour so far. However, this year he already won the European Championships 9-Ball and one of the WPS events in the United States. However, the Euro-Tour title was still not in his list of achievements. He made his way into the final match over Mats Schjetne (NOR) 9:5, Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP) 9:6, Marco Teutscher (NED) 9:8 and finally his teammate Sergey Lutsker (RUS) 9:5. His opponent Christoph Reintjes (GER) also played an amazing tournament so far. His last appearance at the Euro-Tour is eight years ago and he came back to Leende to make it to the final of 199 top players, eliminating big guns including Jakub Koniar (SVK) 9:6, Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) 9:5, Niels Feijen (NED) 9:6 and Albin Ouschan (AUT) 9:6 in the semi-final match. The setup was prepared for a high-class pool final and the match kept all promises. Both players performed quite solid but Reintjes struggled with his break shot. After 6 racks, the German was even leading 4:2 with almost no break. That was due to the fact that Chinakhov missed some shots in the beginning and also played very offensively. But then, the „Siberian Express“ from Russia managed to turn the tide in the match. He took rack 7 after an illegal break from Reintjes. in the next rack, he missed an easy 2-ball but when Reintjes came up with a decent safety shot for him, he fired the 2-ball in with a jump shot and ran the rack to tie the match at 4:4. As the match continued, Reintjes could not come up with a good break shot. Out of 6 breaks, he had 5 of them illegal and had to give the table to Chinakhov. The Russian accepted those gifts and grew stronger while Reintjes’ performance suffered of course since he grew more and more nervous, seeing the score board only adding points on his oppenent’s side. In the end, Chinakhov took the match with 9:4 and deservedly won his first Euro-Tour event in his career. 2017 seems to be his year so far. Let’s see how long the „Siberian Express“ continues on that roll.

"Read More..." for the details.

„When I met Reintjes in the final match, I remembered him from my early Euro-Tour days“, said Chinakhov after the final. „I saw his list of opponents and I must say that he probably had the tougher draw than me“, Chinakhov added. „I knew I had to perform well. In the final match, I was not as nervous as I was before because I was also tired after this long day of pool“, Chinakhov explained, „and in the end I think I have won because my break was better than his.“ „This year is quite successful for me so far and I hope I can keep up the good results“!

Top Eight Finishers

Also today, the first rounds of the Dutch Women’s Open have been played. All-time favourite Kristina Tkach (RUS) started out as furiously as expected. In a full field of 64 participants, she defeated Vania Franco (POR) 7:2, Jennifer Vietz (GER) 7:0 even and Birgit Heidorn (GER) 7:1 in the winner’s qualification round to book her seat in the single elimination stage of the last 16 players. Another remarkable player that could make some noise is Eylul Kibaroglu (TUR). She won her first matches 7:6 over Monika Zabek (POL), 7:2 over Jessika Nilsson (SWE) and 7:5 over Palina Chernik (BLR). Melanie Suessenguth (GER), Oliwia Czuprynska (POL), Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) and Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) also belong to the circle of players that are expected to make it far in the event.

David Alcaide (ESP)

Grilo ousted Alcaide from the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open

Joao Grilo (POR) just eliminated #1 ranked player David Alcaide (ESP) from the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands, in the round of the last 32 players single elimination stage.

Grilo had a day of super performance today. He cleared Vladislav Shopik (BLR) 9:6 in the second winner’s round before losing 5:9 to local hero Marco Teutscher (NED) in the winner’s qualification round. Then, he took down Ville Hamalainen (FIN) in the loser’s qualification round 9:7 to qualify for the round of the last 32 players single elimination. He was drawn into the field and got the toughest of all draws: the current Euro-Tour ranking leader David Alcaide (ESP). What a heavyweight opponent for Grilo! But he managed to keep a foot in the door in the match. He never allowed Alcaide to force his game upon him and took his points when he had the chance. After 6 racks, the score was all even at 3:3. Rack 7 turned out into a safety battle where actually Grilo had his nose in front and went ahead 4:3. He then took his time-out. Alcaide levelled the match again at 4:4 and took his time-out in turn. From then on, Grilo got a 2-point lead over Alcaide. 6:4, 7:5 and 8:6 were the intermediate scores in the match, all in Grilo’s favour. At 8:7, Alcaide received the maximum penalty. He broke the balls, had 2 balls in the pocket but no ball crossing the kitchen line. This meant it was an illegal break for Alcaide. Girl accepted the gift and got to the table with a nice and easy layout in front of him and ran the rack, winning 9:7 over Alcaide and sending the Champion home from the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open.

Last 16 players line-up tomorrow morning...

Joao Grilo (POR) v Jayson Shaw (GBR)
Albin Ouschan (AUT) v Maximilian Lechner (AUT)
Christoph Reintjes (GER) v Wojciech Szewczyk (POL)
Stephan Cohen (nothing) v Niels Feijen (NED)
Oliver Ortmann (GER) v Fedor Gorst (RUS)
Sergey Lutsker (RUS) v Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz (ESP)
Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP) v Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS)
Marco Teutscher (NED) v Christian Sparrenloev-Fischer (SWE)

Maksim Dudanets (RUS) met long time ranked #1 player Mark Gray (GBR) in loser’s round 4. In that match, both players did not play up to their expectations and luck was a factor for both contestants. Alternatively, the won racks so none of them managed to get an advantage over the opponent. After 16 racks, the match was tied at hill-hill. Dudanets broke rack 17. He had the 1-ball down but no shot at the 2-ball. He played a push-out and hid the cue ball behind the 8-ball to go airborne and play a jump shot. He hit the jump but did not pocket it. However, he did not leave a possible shot for Gray. Some safety shots were exchanged. It was Mark Gray who left a possible shot on the 2-ball for Dudanets. The Russian went for it and made it, followed by a clearance of the remaining balls and won the match 9:8, elimination Mark Gray from the tournament roster.

An early out suffered Germany’s up and rising star Joshua Filler today. After having lost to his teammate Oliver Ortmann (GER) yesterday, he played Jakub Koniar (SVK) today. Koniar had the better start and rushed off with 7:2. At that stage, he played rock solid and could have provided an early end for the match. However, when he was leading 7:2, he started missing shots and allowed Filler back to the table. Still, Koniar struggled with his performance. Filler pulled back a few racks from Koniar and closed the gap a bit to turn the score to 6:8 from his point of view. Then, Koniar again had the chance to eliminate Filler. But he missed the 9-ball in order to win the match. Filler used his chances and made the match a hill-hill thriller. In rack 17, Koniar executed the break shot. The break was good, he had the 1-ball down and a good shot at the 2-ball. Since the layout was good he had the chance for a clearance but at hill-hill things are not always as easy as they are at 1:1. However, Koniar kept his nerves together and performed a picture postcard runout in order to win the match by a hair’s breadth with 9:8 and eliminate Filler from the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open.

Earlier today in winner’s round 2, a great comeback happened in the match between Marek Hajdovsky (CZE) and „The Czech Attack“ Roman Hybler (CZE). Hajdovsky was already leading big time in the match. The scoreboard displayed an 8:2 lead for him after 10 racks and Hybler was with one foot in the grave already. But then he started his quest and went for a „mission impossible“. He collected point after point by pulling rack after rack from Hajdovsky who suddenly started to feel the heat again in this match. He probably thought he had the match already in the bag but Hybler taught him differently. In the end, Hybler even managed to overpower Hajdovsky and tore the victory from his teammate’s hands, wining this epic thriller with 9:8 including a comeback of seven (7!) consecutive racks.

Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE)

Ekonomopoulos through with minimum effort

On the first day of the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands, Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) succeeded over Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with 9:7 in a match that was determined by many errors.

The lineup was promising. Ekonomopoulos belongs to Europe’s pool elite for many years already. His opponent today, Maksim Dudanets, belongs to the young Russian players which have earned many merits during European Championships and previous Euro-Tours. Both players have a high profile record and the match was expected to be of high quality. In the beginning of the match, that was valid and true for Dudanets. He played solid and performed quite well while Ekonomopoulos committed unexplainable errors. He missed easy pots and positions and he seemed to be completely off track. After 6 racks, Dudanets had robbed at least three racks off Ekonomopoulos and was 5:1 in the lead. It seemed as if the match would be a single sided affair in favour of Dudanets. But then the tide turned in the match. While Ekonomopoulos grew stronger, Dudanets started missing shots and playing poor positions. A player with the experience of Ekonomopoulos of course benefitted from the situation and snatched some racks from Dudanets in that phase of the match. After 14 racks, the score was all square at 7:7. The tension rose and now it was Dudanets’ turn to commit mistakes. He did so and Ekonomopoulos capitalised from it, went on the hill with 8:7. In rack 16, Ekonomopoulos broke and ran the table to win the match 9:7 over Dudanets. This victory was achieved with quite some luck. Dudanets was the far better player in the first half of the match while Ekonomopoulos dominated the second half. The victory therefore is in order yet still a bit lucky. Ekonomopoulos will face Sanjin Pehlivanovic (BIH) in the next round on the winner’s side while Dudanets needs to seek his fortune on the loser’s side of the draw.

Other remarkable results include Wojciech Sroczynski (POL) defeating Evgenii Buslaev (RUS) by a whisker 9:8. Sweden’s Daniel Tangudd remained victorious today over Denis Grabe (EST). Former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) took down up and rising star Joshua Filler (GER) 9:7 in an exciting and thrilling encounter. Tomi Ahonen (FIN) got the better of Imran Majid (GBR) 9:8. Not the best day for Britain’s pool elite. In the same round, Joao Grilo (POR) achieved a 9:4 victory over Daryl Peach (GBR). Mohammed Soufi (GER) won 9:5 over Mario He (AUT).

Every day, one match from the events will be shown LIVE on the Facebook page of the EPBF for free.
