Day One of the Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Pool Challenge
by ESPN STAR Sports PR

British pool player Chris Melling flew under the radar and took everybody by surprise with his remarkable outing on the first day of the preliminary rounds of the 2012 Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Pool Challenge here at the Ciputra World Mall in Surabaya, Indonesia. Flawless pocketing combined with quick draw shooting garnered him the best time of the day at 4:20 mins.

Refusing to be outdone, compatriot and 2010 World 8Ball Champion Karl Boyes also broke out of the gates sizzling. Efficiently calm and collected, he was able to plan his moves with precision and found cleaning the table relatively easy. His total time of 4:24 mins was good enough to finish behind Melling in second place.

Surprisingly, newly crowned 2012 World 9Ball champion Daren Appleton was not able to find his rhythm, garnering four 10 second penalties and was the worst out of the British trio with a time of 6:27 mins.

Meanwhile, 2011 World 8Ball Champion Dennis Orcollo upstaged his compatriots Jeffrey De Luna and Roberto Gomez. His crackling time of 4:31 minutes was good enough to book the third best time of the day and a comfortable cushion heading into the second preliminary sessions.

"Read More..." for the details.

Eyes set on the championship, Orcollo wasted no time getting to work, starting strong and clocking in with a solid time of 00:52 seconds in his first rack of five. A cleaner break in the second rack allowed him to further improve his result, stopping the clock at 00:45 seconds. A slight hiccup in the third rack slowed his pace, but the former world number one quickly recovered and turned in blazing times of 00:51 and 00:59 seconds for the final two racks.

Earlier in the day, Gomez failed to make an impression on his turn at the tables. Coming into the first round with a mindset that an average time of six minutes would guarantee a round of 32 berth, the Pinoy contender lacked spring in his step as he made his way through the first session. Gomez finished with the slowest time out of the three Filipino challengers with a time of 6:43 mins. The Pinoy cue-artist nicknamed “Superman” now has his work cut out for him as he needs to ensure a better overall time in the second session to advance into the next round.

De Luna on the other hand, had more success in garnering competitive times, averaging about a minute for each of the five racks, De Luna was only hampered by three missed ball penalties, totaling 30 seconds which added up for a respectable preliminary time of 5:20 mins.

Other notable times in day one of competition came from Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann (4:50), American Shane Van Boening (5:18 ) and Indonesian Adolof Leunupun (4:58 ) who gave an inspired performance in front of his hometown crowd.

Day one proved to be a thrilling learning experience for fans and players alike. Players who did not perform well today would be looking to move up a gear to make up lost ground in the second five-rack session of the preliminaries in Day 2.

World No.1 Appleton set to light up Guinness World Series of Pool

2012 Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Pool Challenge
by ESPN STAR Sports PR

Fresh from a stunning win over China’s Li He-Wen to bag the 2012 WPA World 9Ball Championship last month, reigning world number one, Darren Appleton sets his eyes on winning the coveted Guinness World Series of Pool crown taking place at the Ciputra World mall in Indonesia’s capital of East Java, Surabaya. However, with the tournament shifting its format to Speed Pool, all bets are off as the brand new discipline promises to test even the hardiest of champions.

Add to the welcome arrival of female competitors and a stellar list of top international cue masters such as 2010 WPA 8ball Champion Karl Boyes (GBR), GWSOP defending champion Ko Pin-Yi (TPE), 2011 WPA 8Ball Champion Dennis Orcollo (PHI), the “Black Widow” Jeanette Lee (USA) and 2011 WPA 9Ball champion Yukio Akagariyama (JPN) all vying for the same prize, the 10Ball tournament is set to another tantalizing event for sports fans.

The Indonesian contingent is competently represented as well and are poised to make an impact with a healthy number of local entries. Twenty competitors from the regional qualifiers in Manado, Jakarta, Medan, Makassar and Surabaya, two from the Indonesian Billiards Association (POBSI) and an organizer invite to local hero and 2010 GWSOP runner-up Irsal Nasution makes for a robust competitive field this year.

The first round sees the 40 players battling the clock as they play two sessions of five racks each with the top 32 times advancing to the next round. From there it will be a single knockout format all the way to the semifinals with each match having the players face-off in five racks, whoever has the total best-time wins. The finals will be a 7- rack shootout to determine the championship.

Darren Appleton commented: “The Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Pool challenge is a great development for players and fans alike. It makes the competition thrilling and very unpredictable which makes for great pool. It’s not all about speed though. You have to be smart in how you play as well. Strategy plays a big part in winning. After the rigors of the world nine ball tournament, the Guinness World Series of pool is a welcome change of environment. It is still very competitive and yet at the same time, we can have fun!”

John Galvin, the Guinness representative in Indonesia remarked: “The Guinness World Series of Pool tournament has created several opportunities for Indonesian pool enthusiasts to develop and showcase their talents, especially through the chance to compete with international pool players. This Grand Finals will definitely see a bolder and more challenging level of Speed Pool competition. Guinness is proud to have pioneered this new Speed Pool format in Indonesia and will continue to be a strong supporter of the development of pool sport in the country.”

“Year after year, we have been treated to an immaculate showcase of pool and I’m delighted to announce that the new developments for this year’s event have elevated the GWSOP to the next level. As Asia’s biggest sports content provider, we are committed to bring you the latest developments in broadcast technology and this year, we are proud to share that the 2012 GWSOP will feature head-to-head table action which will be showcased live across our footprint, reaching millions of viewers across Asia on ESPN STAR Sports’ networks. I'm happy to share that, in addition to our television coverage, fans can also enjoy catching the event LIVE online on ESPN Player and Mobile ESPN, where available. With all these new developments, I’m sure you’ll agree that this year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet.” Says Harvey Davis, Vice President, ESPN STAR Sports Event Management Group.

The broadcast of the 2012 Guinness World Series of Pool – SpeedBall challenge will be LIVE on STAR Sports, with fifteen hours of exhilarating competition from July 13 - 15, 2012.
