Betfred To Sponsor World Snooker Championship

Snooker’s biggest tournament, the World Championship, will be title-sponsored by Betfred for the next three years.

The prestigious event will be known as the Betfred World Snooker Championship until at least 2017.

This year’s tournament will run from April 18 to May 4 at the famous Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, with the top 16 seeds joined by 16 qualifiers to chase the £300,000 top prize.

It is one of the greatest events in sport, and last year reached an astonishing audience of over 330 million viewers worldwide, televised live by 12 broadcasters in 80 different countries.

Betfred previously sponsored the tournament from 2009 to 2012.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are thrilled to welcome back Betfred as title sponsor of our blue riband tournament and we look forward to working closely with their team on delivering another top class event.

“We recently announced that we are staying at the Crucible until 2017, so this agreement with Betfred fits perfectly and gives us a firm foundation to keep growing the event in the coming years.

“The World Championship has a rich history dating back to 1927 and the international audience we are now reaching is extraordinary. Last year’s figure of over 330 million, in our key markets in the UK, Europe and China alone, was up 30 per cent on the previous year. That shows the extent to which we are developing as a global sport.

“It is building up to be a sensational tournament, with so many of the top players in form, and an array of young talents coming through. The whole event is virtually sold out, and those lucky enough to have a seat inside the Crucible are going to see something special.”

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be once again sponsoring the World Snooker Championship. It’s the pinnacle of the game and one of the key sporting events of the year. I’m really looking forward to be back at the Crucible which I regard as the home of snooker.”

Many sessions are sold out, but for the latest ticket availability call 0844 65 65 147 or visit sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

The qualifying rounds run from April 8 to 15 at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. For tickets see www.sivtickets.com or call 0114 2233777

Jennifer Barretta Suits Up for USA: The 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup

Manila, Philippines- Here she comes. NYC's all-American girl Jennifer "9mm" Barretta has been selected to represent USA on Team West against Asia in the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup ! Barretta is currently ranked in the WPBA elite Top 10 for the past 4 years and has been itching to suit up for America! The greatest rivalry in women's billiards is about to ignite. On April 16-18th, 2015 the second installment of the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup will feature champions vs champions as the best women from Asia will take on the best in the West! Last year, Team Asia had a dominating performance over Team West during the 3 days of competition. This year the quad squad from USA & Europe will be looking to even the score. The 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup will be hosted by the award winning Resorts World Manila Casino & Hotel and sponsored by Andy Cloth and Viking Cue. The Queens Cup is a Dragon Promotions production.

"I've played her a whole bunch of times and I can tell you Jennifer has got a lot of fight in her. First, her mechanics are really strong, and you can tell right away that's not an accident. She's a dedicated practice machine. Plus she has a really good mental game. That makes her a natural pick to represent the USA in the Queens Cup. And she always carries herself well on and off the table. As my pool buddy would say, 'Win or lose, she's always a perfect gentleman' ", said top ranked American pro Jeremy Sossei, a top contender himself to make team USA for the men's Mosconi Cup.

"I'm very excited that I will have the opportunity to play in the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup. It's always a great honor to be chosen to represent your country, but getting to experience that honor in front of the best pool fans in the world makes it even more special", said Barretta on being selected to play for USA on Team West, and playing in front of the pool crazed fans of the Philippines.

The Queens Cup will showcase the rivalry between the Asians and their western counterparts in Europe and USA, very similar to the Ryder Cup in golf or Davis Cup in tennis. Elite professional ladies from their respective countries and continents are selected onto two sides representing the East and West. The event will last 3 days in a 10-Ball format that will conclude when one team reaches 10 match wins. Style of play will include singles, doubles, triples, and 4-on-4. Captains will be put to the test to create the best strategy in partnerships and chemistry of match-ups. If the matches go 9 to 9 hill-hill, a final 4-on-4 play will set the scene for the dramatic conclusion.

Barretta is not a complete stranger to team competition format. She played for the USA in the World Mixed Doubles in China, and had a winning record in the USA vs Korea 2 day dual tournament where she was a key member in USA's victory over Korea's team of Ga Young Kim, Jeanette Lee, Charlie Williams, and Min Hu Baek.

"Jennifer is what I call a hard nosed player. She's ultra competitive. When the first Queens Cup was announced, she called me and told me she wanted in. That team was already set but got slaughtered by Asia. And so, well, it took a little longer but now she gets her shot", explained Charlie Williams, Executive Producer of the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup. "Selecting the players for the team is a daunting task when going against a powerhouse like Asia. It requires things that are more than meets the eye. There's going to be a ton of pressure that many of these players have never experienced before, and it's also going to require a player to give 110% of their all. And Jennifer Barretta is all of those things."

A late starter in billiards, Barretta quickly climbed the amateur ranks to first become the "Player of the Year" on the Chesapeake Area Tour for women, which earned her spots into all of the professional events on the pro tour. By the end of the pro tour season, Jennifer evolved from amateur to professional when she accumulated enough points to achieve the prestigious "Touring Pro" status with the Women's Professional Billiards Association. By the next season Jennifer proved she was more than just a pretty face when she defeated the #1 ranked player during the quarter-finals of an ESPN televised match, ultimately finishing the pro event in 3rd place. A year after that she captured her first international title by winning the Empress Cup in Korea defeating Yu Ram Cha, Jeanette Lee, and Ga Young Kim in front of their home crowd to record breaking television audiences. Since then, Barretta has been a staple top 3 ranked American player for several years now and is the second highest ranked American in the world rankings.

Besides becoming a top player, Jennifer Barretta has also transformed into a popular figure and ambassador of the game and able to promote it to the masses. Utilizing her movie star looks, fitness, and professionalism, she has appeared in numerous mainstream media including FHM Magazine and will be one of the stars in an upcoming reality TV show airing on TruTv this summer.

The 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup will be broadcasted worldwide to very receptive audiences who loved the last one. This year predicts for an even bigger viewership for this highly entertaining and competitive event. Yahoo Sports writer Bob Guerrero described the event in his article "Queens Cup is a breath of fresh air for pool" .

The AM8.com Queens Cup brings a level of excitement and pressure never before seen in women's billiards. On April 16th, The Empresses of Pool Battle for Glory.

Prince Snooker Club Awarded 25th Anniversary National Snooker Championship

The United States Snooker Association (USSA) has awarded the Prince Snooker Club in Brooklyn, New York, the great honor of hosting this year's commemorative United States National Snooker Championship, marking the 25th anniversary of this prestigious event, which will take place from May 22-25.

The proprietor of the Prince Snooker Club, Mr. Tommy Chen, submitted an excellent bid to host this year's Championship which was accepted by the USSA Board with much gratitude. Mr. Chen and his wife, Anita, have been long standing and generous supporters of snooker in the United States, and have previously hosted this Championship on two occasions which were in 2009 and 2011.

As this is a celebratory 25th anniversary of the Championship, the founder and Honorary Life Chairman of the USSA, Michael Collins, intends to be present at the event and will also provide and present special trophies to the winner and runner-up.

Collins commented: "The time I have available gives me the opportunity to convey my utter excitement, to still be a part of what is going on in the USA with snooker. I look forward to the upcoming Nationals with great pride, this feeling comes from being involved with an incredible group of people, all the players, and of course a truly dedicated Board – I cannot say enough about them!

"The climax will be of course, the presentation of the 25th anniversary trophies – hard to believe the association has reached this milestone. It will be my honor to attend, soak it all in and enjoy, I trust the same feeling will be shared by everyone attending.

"In closing, I think this will be the best tourney ever."

Collins served as the USSA's Executive Director at the time of the first Championship back in 1991, and he presented the trophy to the first Champion, Tom Kollins, who would go on to win the Championship for a record five times and will also be competing in this year's event.

Kollins, who is the current serving vice-president of the USSA, said: "I was already a 55-year-old senior when I played in that first Championship. Now, as I approach my 80th birthday, I still have a great enthusiasm for the game and plan on being in the mix once again.

"With Tommy and Anita Chen as our hosts, this event promises to be among the best ever. Would not miss it for the world."

Amongst all the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary however, there will be a moment of remembrance before the commencement of the first day's play of the Championship for the Scottish professional snooker referee Hugh Brown, who acted as the USSA's Head Referee and Official Refereeing Coach & Examiner and was present at several Championships, who sadly passed away in August of last year.

The reigning Champion Ajeya Prabhakar will be back to defend his title, and he will be hoping for a better outcome this year as he has lost in both of the previous two finals played at the Prince Snooker Club to Ahmed Aly Elsayed.

Alan Morris, the current Executive Director of the USSA, said: "The USSA is very happy to be back at the Prince Snooker Club for this year's special anniversary Championship.

I have been present at a previous Championship held at the Prince Snooker Club, and Tommy and his wonderful wife Anita are marvelous hosts and make everyone so very welcome with their enthusiasm and hospitality.

"I feel sure that this year's Championship will be one to remember."

The Prince Snooker Club is located at 6322 20th Avenue (2nd floor) in Brooklyn, and has a combination of five regulation standard snooker tables, Riley and B.L.P. brands, which are all kept in immaculate condition, and covered in Strachan 6811 snooker cloth using Aramith Tournament Champion snooker balls.

Mr. Chen is kindly adding a substantial amount in prize money, and the four semifinalists will be presented with B.L.P. snooker cues and cases. There will also be an Happy After Party for all in attendance at the conclusion of the Championship.

The Championship Entry document and the entry system for eligible participants are available on the SnookerUSA.com website.

Taiwanese Legend Selected for Team Asia

Manila, Philippines- A veteran force joins the Eastern team. Taiwan's world renowned Jennifer "China Doll" Chen is the next Asian player selected for Team Asia in the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup to play against USA/Europe next month. Chen has 12 major international titles as well as a gold at the highly coveted Asian Games, and will be the senior member of Team Asia with 24 years of professional competitive experience.

"Chen is a very fun player to watch. Especially when she get's hot on the pool table", says Shari Stauch, former veteran pro on tour & publisher for Pool & Billiard Magazine.

"Jennifer's has strong physical skills like jumping balls really well and she never goes to the table with doubt. She's always been that way", comments all-star American pro Vivian Villarreal. " The experiences she has playing great players for big stakes on the line and winning are huge. That's what gives her that killer focus, which is one of her biggest strengths and a big asset for Team Asia."

"I was surprised and very honored when I was selected for the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup to play for Team Asia. I've been a 9-Ball player for 20 years, but I think now that I've been introduced to 10-Ball, I like that game more", said Chen. When asked on her Queens Cup predictions for this year, she replied, " Asians have been more dominant in pool. Because we start training at a young age and have so many good, young players compared to the West. So, I think this is why we will win."

Jennifer Chen has had an incredible career in billiards, attaining world fame through her accomplishments on the table, as well as public fame off the table becoming a national celebrity in her home country of Taiwan. She started her junior career off winning the China/Japan Pool Championship and then a year later won the prestigious US Open 14.1. She then won the Japan Open and then achieved world acclaim with a silver medal at the World 9-Ball Championship, helping her earn the Rookie of the Year in women's pool. A couple years later she was world ranked at #1, and had added 2 more gold medals for Taiwan in consecutive Asian Games. Chen also won the coveted Amway Cup World Open, making her all in all a serious component of experience and class for Team Asia.

"Jennifer Chen is one of the very few Asian women that has achieved an iconic status in billiards. She is going to be a solid foundation of experience for the younger Asians on the team", said Charlie Williams, former top American pro and Executive Producer of the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup.

Off the green felt, Jennifer Chen became a mainstream celebrity with her model looks backed up by world class skills. She was in numerous TV shows, soap operas, magazines, and even had books published on her. Today, Chen is a business woman running her upscale billiards bar and restaurant called JC Billiards & Club in Shanghai, China.

The 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup will be broadcasted worldwide to very receptive audiences who loved the last one. This year predicts for an even bigger viewership for this highly entertaining and competitive event. The 24 teams will be divided into four groups of six teams, with each team to play five matches in the group stages. The top two teams in each group qualify for the knock-out stages.

The format will be a combination of singles and doubles play.

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: “We are delighted to bring the World Cup back on to the calendar for the first time since 2011, and especially to stage it in the wonderful city of Wuxi.

“World Cups are always fantastic events in any sport because the players feel as if they are representing a nation, and the fans in each country can get right behind their team. Snooker is usually an individual game, so to play in a team brings a new kind of pressure. The players will be striving to climb the ranking list between now and the end of the season to earn a World Cup place.

"Snooker has grown massively as an international sport in recent years so it is fitting that we are now bringing back the World Cup. There is some incredible talent out there among nations which have not traditionally been snooker hot-beds, and now those players have the opportunity to show their skill on a major stage.

“I would like to pay tribute to the CBSA and the promoter in Wuxi for their hard work in bringing this event to fruition. We plan for it to become a biennial event, with the next one to take place in 2017. With so much support for snooker in China, I have no doubt the World Cup will be a great success.”

EPBF & BCA Launch Atlantic Challenge Cup

Junior players to compete annually in Europe versus USA competition

The European Pocket Billiard Federation and the Billiard Congress of America, the governing bodies of pool in their respective regions and two of the founding members of the World Pool-Billiard Association, today announced a joint venture in the promotion of junior pool. Beginning in 2015, a Mosconi Cup style event for junior players will be held.

Two teams consisting of four boys and two girls will represent Europe and America and do battle from July 1 - 4, 2015 on European soil in Rankweil, Austria in the inaugural staging of the Atlantic Challenge Cup between Europe and America.

Proud to launch the event in Europe, EPBF president Gre Leenders had this to say, "We at the EPBF and our members are pleased with the way we have enhanced the development in the youth section over the last years and this will be another great platform for the youth to be able to perform. We expect the desire from the players wanting to be included into the team to be so strong and with an ever increasing standard within pool, we hope to have some great entertainment when the time comes."

Equally excited to see this competition come to fruition, BCA Chairman Mike Serra commented, “We are thrilled to be a partner in the Atlantic Challenge Cup. The future of the game lies in our ability to develop tomorrow’s players. The prestige of competing in an event of this magnitude will further promote the game to today’s youth. Our sport needs positive exposure, and this is the ideal vehicle to meet such a need. We look forward to working closely with the Billiard Education Foundation to select a competitive team to compete in the inaugural Atlantic Challenge Cup.”

It was only a matter of time before an event like this was created for the young talent that is of abundance in Europe and America. After long planning between the EPBF and BCA, a deal was made to stage this event long term. This looks like it has the makings of a real match up of the future to come and an exciting event to look forward to every year.

The EPBF has long established itself in the creation of youth projects and the BCA formed the BEF to further help develop junior pool on their side of the Atlantic. As such, the BEF will select the team and coach for the upcoming competition.

“The Billiard Education Foundation is looking forward to the inaugural Atlantic Challenge Cup,” said Billiard Education Foundation Executive Director Samm Diep-Vidal. “We’re excited to offer our youth another opportunity to represent our nation on foreign soil in 2015 and on our home turf in 2016. Go Team USA!”

Action starts on the 1st of July over a period of what could be four fantastic days in a race to 11 from a total of 21 matches possible.

More information on the Atlantic Challenge Cup will be announced in the near future.

Marteel To Referee World Final

Olivier Marteel will become the first Belgian to referee the Crucible final at the Betfred World Championship, which starts next month.

The 45-year-old from Koksijde in West Flanders will take charge of the final in Sheffield on May 3 and 4.

Marteel has previously refereed several major finals, including last week’s World Grand Prix, and officiated the semi-final between Mark Selby and Neil Robertson at the Crucible last year.

“I had dreamed of refereeing the World Championship final, but I never thought it would happen,” said Marteel. “When I started out in refereeing, I never expected to get very far.

“I first went to the Crucible as a fan in 1992. Even then, I knew how special the venue was. And of course the first time I refereed there, I felt it even more – I was shaking. I will be a bit nervous for the final, but that’s a good thing. It gets your adrenaline going, gives you a kick, and makes you focus.

“I’m very proud to be the first Belgian to referee the final, and the second from continental Europe, after Jan Verhaas. My whole career has been half for me, and half for Belgian snooker.”

Father-of-one Marteel, who was once a keen snooker player and has a top break of 138, combines his refereeing work with a full time job as a radiology nurse.

“I will be doing night shifts before going to Sheffield to make sure I have enough time off,” he added. “It takes a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it for me because I love snooker so much.

“Making a mistake as a referee is nothing like making a mistake in a hospital. Inject too much medicine, and you could kill someone. That’s a bit different to not putting a ball back correctly.”

The Betfred World Championship runs from April 18 to May 4, with the best players on the planet chasing the famous trophy and a top prize of £300,000. Tickets are sold out for most sessions – for the latest availability call 0844 65 65 147 or visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

The qualifying rounds at Pond’s Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield run from April 8 to 15. Tickets cost just £10 per day (plus booking fee). To book call www.sivtickets.com or call 0114 2233777.

The World Championship is supported by Sheffield City Council.

Manila, Philippines- The most decorated female sports figure of her country, reigning World Champion Rubilen Amit will represent the Philippines in the 2015 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup. She has also been called to duty as the captain of Team Asia this time around following her stunning performance from last year. The 5-Times SEA Games gold medalist says she is up for the task. This year the USA & Europe will be looking to even the score. The 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup will be hosted by the award winning Resorts World Manila Casino & Hotel and sponsored by Andy Cloth , Aramith Balls, and Viking Cue. The Queens Cup is a Dragon Promotions production.

Pay-per-view is now available at a special $20 pre-event sale by going to DragonPromotions.com or clicking here

"Bingkay (Amit's nickname) is the kind of Filipina athlete we can all look up to. She is incredibly disciplined and makes the most of her talent. She really deserves to be a part of this team, since she has a track record of success.", explains Bob Guerrero of Yahoo Sports. The ABS-CBN football and billiards sports analyst adds, "Bingkay should also be a terrific captain. She has the personality to bring out the best in the other Asian players, with whom she is very close to. Bingkay is a fun-loving young lady, so for sure she will keep things loose and fun as well. The East team will be very tough to beat with her in it."

"The last 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup was truly an experience to remember. Im honored and thankful to be able to participate in this exciting event. Being chosen captain is such a huge honor and to be honest, it's a lot more pressure. But I learned so much from being a part of the past team events from leaders such as Efren Reyes. He is so inspiring with his will to win. I will follow in the footsteps of these great men and women that have led me in the past. I'm up for the challenge", said Amit when asked about moving from her typical role of player to leader.

"Rubilen is one of those quiet champions that doesn't make a lot of noise, but when you talk about the best of the best, you have to include her. She has the humility of Efren Reyes, the precision of Dennis Orcullo, and the heart of Alex Pagulayan. And her stats in team competition is incredible. She was the obvious choice to captain Team Asia this year", explained Charlie Williams , Executive Producer of the 亚美娱乐 AM8.com Queens Cup.

Rubilen Amit was born in the Cebu region of the Philippines, and graduated with an accounting degree along with a couple collegiate billiard titles. In 2005, she started officially representing her country as she was selected on the Philippines National Team for the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) where she won took home the gold. This would be the first of 7 gold medals that she would win in her career for her country. Her breakthrough came when she shocked the world by winning the Women's World 10-Ball in 2009, and then becoming the only player to repeat the feat when she won again. Aside from singles events, Amit has had an unusually high success rate in team competitions. She has won two World Mixed Doubles titles with her hero Efren Reyes both times, took the silver in the Team Philippines finale at the World Team Championship, and nearly went undefeated for Team Asia all 3 days of the last Queens Cup.

The AM8.com Queens Cup brings a level of excitement and pressure never before seen in women's billiards. On April 16th, The Empresses of Pool Battle for Glory.
