Snooker to trial shorter format

Higgins and O'Sullivan have both criticised the WPBSA recently
A new shorter form of snooker is set to be trialled at the World Championship in Sheffield later this month.

The reduced version - provisionally titled 'Super6s' - will feature the same number of colours per frame as the regular format but only six reds.

It is hoped the new format will help snooker replicate the success of Twenty20 cricket.

It will be trialled with a contest between a legends team and a rising star side at the Crucible event...

Hmmm!

i think 10 reds would be better, like isnooker if anyone plays that, least centuries could still be made.

think one off tournaments would be interesting

I'm all for seeing them try new things to add some spice to the game so good luck to them. But for me it's not going to work. I think snooker is one of those sports that either appeals or it doesn't so to those that love the game they will hate this and to those that don't care much for the game.... well they still won't care much for it.

I also agree you need at least 10 reds so a century is possible. Otherwise what's the big deal with the game? What can you do to excite the crowd? At least darts has a 9 dart finish and snooker has a 147. Even with 10 reds I don't think a 107 is such a fantastic achievement - I've had a couple of 106's and I can't play!

They could do a lot more to reinvigorate the game and get the puiblic's imagination without spoiling the game itself. It's about the personalities.

Make the balls and pockets bigger, make the table smaller, make the scoring system simpler, change the colour of the cloth, ditch the antique looking tables and antique looking uniforms, make it a faster game, get some personality into the players/game, ban all grannies from falling asleep in the front row.

Oh... they did do all that, it's called American Pool.

Make snooker illegal, force all the players to play American Pool in shorts and t-shirt.

Does anyone really watch snooker for exciting action, quick-fire matches, and short races?

Not me!

I love the highly tactical battles, the strategy, the tension, the real long races, the final that takes two days to complete.

All the stuff we don't have in American Pool really. Vive la difference!

I think this is a way of alienating existing fans, rather than attracting new ones.

Of course, I could be wrong - look at 20/20 cricket!

aslong as it isnt introduce to the main tournaments i think it will be ok.

how good was this years master final against ronnie and selby but imagine if it was only 6 reds at a time, theres no way it would have produced the same drama

the point people make about more personalties, i dont think theres anything that can be done about, afterall you cant do anything about what personality comes with the new players who make it if you get what i mean

The personalities are the way they are because of how kids are introduced to snooker. In a silent dark room full of grandads.

Snooker definately needs a revamp but I too am not sure this is the answer. I will of course watch it and hope to be proved wrong.
As far as trying to make snooker more like American Pool, I would strongly dicourage that because as far as I can tell, televised pool has very little following and attracts very little sponsorship hence the current state of affairs with the WPC. Infact I think American Pool needs to start thinking along the same lines as snooker, i.e. how can we make this game attractive to a TV audience.
A good atart for snooker would be to get rid of that awful announcer and his even worse catch phrase "Lets get the boys on the base". It makes me cringe everytime he says it. Individual walk on music and an assortment of attractive young ladies would also be a good starting point. Can't see the BBC agreeing to the latter though..!

6 reds? So a maximum would be 75? So you're in a frame winning position at a break of around 40?

This will make the tournaments more open as anyone pro is good enough to keep their composure for a 40 break!

Christ, even I can do that!

I dont really think that you can compare it to 20/20 cricket.

20/20 is all about the more aggressive styles of play as you need to score the maximum amount of runs in a short time span, which is more risky as your more likely to go out.

I really dont think this is the right way to go about it as you take away a part of the element of saftey ect. I'm sure that most of the frames will be very similar as well. Somebody breaks, few safety's, shot is left on and the opponent clears up.

Off topic slightly. But the pro 9 article, about Miss Tabb doing the final of the world snooker championship, is completely out of order.

I mean, there wasn't a single photo of her. It's an OUTRAGE!

really not liking this idea, no centuries, much less skill. Really going to take the focus awayfrom the best players, u can make a 50 break and lose the frame with 15 reds. A good standard club player could now beat some of the best players....is tht right? i think not

I completely agree with you, which is why I've changed the photo to this now...

Also.. will it be winner breaks or alternate breaks? :D and then how will they decide who breaks first? Will a coin toss really be the deciding factor of the game? :D
