Pro9 is very saddened to report the death of a true legend of the cue sport world, Steve 'The Miz' Mizerak.

There will be many players in the UK not familiar with Steve and his achievements but you can get a flavour of this from AZ Billiards, there are numerous tributes to the great man. I am sure someone will post up the links.

A sad day.

This is a sad day for the world of pool, 'The Miz' was a true legend and probably my favourite ever player. From his four US Open titles to his appearance in the fim 'The Color of Money' he will go down as one of the greatest pool players ever! He will be sorely missed.

A monumental loss to the game, very sad, a real "household name" pool player.

Just a personal ramble...

The first time I encountered The Miz was when he played Steve Davis in the 1987 Fiat Snooker-Pool Challenge in St Moritz, Switzerland. It was a 3-leg challenge match that involved Straight Pool, Snooker and 9 Ball and was designed to introduce the pool disciplines to the UK audience and snooker to the American audience.

Sadly, on the videotape of the challenge that was later released in the UK, there was no footage of Mizerak playing Straight Pool, but there he showed that he could hold his own at Snooker. Then, when it came to 9 Ball, we finally got to see "The Mizerak Stroke".

Last year, I had the thrill of actually meeting the man himself when I went to the US Open. When he was introduced to the crowd at the main TV table in the Conference Centre, it is safe to say that there were few dry eyes as he was given a standing ovation by every member of that audience (I know that I had to wipe my eyes a couple of times). At the dinner that was organised to celebrate his career, I stood and spoke with him for a few minutes before the speeches took place.

He even signed the cover of my Fiat Challenge video.

A great player and, from the stories that were told that evening, a fantastic person. He will be missed.

Best wishes

I can't begin to put into words how sad it is to hear of another legend that is now gone.

A player of great ability and character alike, is a player that many others knew of well and enjoyed being around, both on and off the table.

He will be greatly missed and I think that it is an honour to have known of Steve and of the amount that he has given in his life to the great sport that we all love today.

I take my hat off to a great player, a great character and now an eternal legend... R.I.P. Steve, you may be gone, but not forgotten, a legend never dies.

Willie.

Big Dave?... Would it be possible for you to post an article and a few pictures of The MIz?... in a tribute to him?

For those of you who have not seen 'The Miz' in action, here is a link of him playing Straight Pool againt Lou Butera.
