This is normal coming from English Pool. On a 6 x 3 the cue ball is 1/8" smaller than the object ball and thus is lighter also. What this means is that particularly with more powerful strokes a phenomenon often called bounce back is a factor. Basically, the cue ball wants to go back when you strike the middle of the ball! The sheer size and weight of the balls in American Pool take adjustment but you'll be fine in no time. When you have a choice I advise that you send the cue ball forwards for position and avoid the long deep screw at all costs as it's seen as a penalty shot! Cheers for the tip!

Sadly it doesn't look like I'll be attending. My back's been giving me trouble for nearly two weeks now and despite the pain killers it's still bad today. All have a good day though...

Well done Andy... AGAIN! 4 wins since and including 29/12/13 I make it... Domination! On a side note, how have the last few gone time wise Tony? If it's possible we should do true double elimination, first to 6 and get rid of the gaffe double elimination to SF. [ This message was edited by: PH on 2014-07-14 02:00 ]

Just a question.
Where does everyone get their cues from?

I've not been to many Rileys but this is certainly better than most. Only gripe is that some of the pocket linings need screwing securely into the table. This caused a bizarre incident when I played Andy Mac and 2 balls jammed in the pocket for two consecutive shots. That aside, I had a good day. Comp was run well again so big thanks to Tony. Well done to those who cashed-in.

Never mind! We've discussed Double Elimination to the death in the past and we both have an opinion on it! Obviously time is an issue and it's why we play the competition the way that we do! Personally I'd do a true DE with races to 5 or a SE with races to 10 but I imagine that what we have now is the best compromise for the full field. You've done really well Kris and I imagine that you're a good, natural player to make the final. Andy has been the most consistent player this year and is tough to beat, but you'll get there! In regards to cues, I have some spares (different levels too) and may be able to sell you a good budget cue! I know what you mean Matt with the loose screws. It can be very distracting when playing to the middle pocket at pace! The competition is always well run and we do the best with what is available. The tables could be better and by all accounts they will be soon. It's all we have in Merseyside so we should be thankful. Personally it's not looking great for me. The back pain sounds like degeneration of my Scoliosis condition and I have to see a specialist as it's been locking up for over two weeks now. The main hope is that no surgery is required but I'm obviously hoping things have cleared up for the August competition.

Cheers PH, hope you get better soon.
My opinion about the tables: Table 3 Had the problem with a pocket where if you didn't play the ball into the middle of the pocket it would stay out. The tables run straight unlike most clubs, but they all could do with a Re-cloth. But a good pool player never blames the table only himself.
I've been told i'm a natural pool player, but i wish i could be a fly on the wall when i play.

Cheers.
I'm not really familiar with the tables by number! I think that the table with the loose screw in the middle would be T4. I know where it is in the club, just not by number for certain!
In general, what I've noticed is that if you play a ball down the rail at pace you can't be sure that it's going to be accepted, regardless of accuracy. The worn cloth necessitates leaving yourself a tougher shot and a more natural angle which isn't ideal! Position is probably my main strength for example and I'm not ashamed to say that sacrificing the ideal angle for a tougher shot can make me nervous!
While it's true that you should get out of the habit of blaming a table for your losses, it's also pretty ignorant to underestimate the effect of playing conditions on games and results.
