I've just received this press release from the WPA, it's virtually identical to the previous release, although this one does mention paying the top 32 ranked players...

PRESS RELEASE
24 November 2008
WPA RANKING SYSTEM
The WPA Ranking System will go into effect on January 1, 2009. This system is designed to benefit players, organisers, and fans as well as to streamline the operations of the WPA. The WPA will soon launch an updated website to offer far more flexibility and information including the latest updated rankings.
Beginning in 2009 players who wish to compete in our sanctioned events will be required to be members of WPA affiliated organisations. This is a fundamental requirement of any sporting organisation. Other billiard sports, including Carom as well as amateur and professional Snooker, have had this rule for many years and now pool has joined this fraternity.
In 2009, the WPA events will offer prize money to its player members in excess of US $1,500,000. Most of these will carry no entry fees.
The criteria for selecting events for ranking status include:
· all tournaments must be open to all players (invitation, teams, special promotion type events will not count).
· each tournament must have added prize money of at least US$100,000. The WPA Board can use its discretion to change this figure from time to time as required by circumstance.
· all players who participate in qualifiers or the main event must be members of an affiliated WPA association.
· chosen tournaments must be annual events.
Any player who is on our rankings, and does not have membership with a WPA affiliated organisation by January 31 each year, will be removed from the list and lose their points. These points, once lost, are not able to be reinstated.
When a player enters a qualifying tournament, he will be asked if they are a member of an organisation under the WPA umbrella, and if not, they will pay a membership fee together with any entry fee that may apply. That membership fee will be passed on to the respective body from where the player comes.
If a player comes from an area that is not covered by a WPA membership, the Continental member for that region will have a special division to accommodate such players.
Points will be awarded to everyone who competes in every ranking tournament. The points will remain credited to the player until the tournament is played again, or in the event is not held for any reason, to the 31st December.
For tournaments with 128 or more player fields, the top 24 available players on the ranking list will receive automatic entry. These spots will not affect the allocations that WPA members normally receive. Points will be credited at the completion of each ranking event, and positions will be updated accordingly.
The WPA is finalising an arrangement where players in the top 32 (for fields of 128 or more) will receive bonus payments to assist them with their costs. We believe this will be a great incentive for everyone to participate in as many events as possible to earn maximum points and have an opportunity to access this funding.
We look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have on the ranking system. Our contact address is
