So has this been launched in response to Peter's efforts? Well whatever the reason a quick scan by me and I've already spotted some controversial things about it.

Points system seems strange with Daz & Daryl earning 1000 points for world 9/10 and Mika only earning 625 for the US Open. As much as I'm happy for Daz & Daryl surely you can't say Mika's win is worth nearly half?

But the most controversial and significant thing is that only players affiliated to an organisation associated with the WPA will be able to play in these events in future. So the US Open is not an open anymore then!

In Britain that means we have to be affiliated to the BPPPA, which is affiliated to the EPBF, which is affiliated to the WPA. in 2008 all GB9 tour players are automatically members of the BPPPA / EPBF but we have yet to see what will happen in 2009 as it looks like the BPPPA will cease membership due to Ted's poor health. This could have implications for our players.

Finally, why is this ranking system just for men? AFAIK women can enter all the events listed? Or am I wrong in that? Anyway, I feel sure Jasmin would be well up that list.

I would like to think that this initiative was started by me but it is obviously not the case and it was only a coincidence that my list appeared before that of the WPA.

Actually I had a conversation with Ian Andersen in Manila and he told me that the WPA were looking at an incentive scheme for top players but he didn't tell me that they were working on a new ranking sytem as well or I wouldn't have spent all the time that I did on doing mine.

I agree that certain events should carry more points than others and I was/am working on similar lines. I am surprised however, that the US Open carries so much of a difference from the other events bearing in mind that there are double the number of players.

I think we need to wait and see if the US Open continues to be "an open", my guess is that it will be.

Affiliation to the EPBF is something that will need to be ironed out, if indeed the BPPPA ceases to be, I imagine that the GB9 will have to apply to represent the United Kingdom.

With regard to Jasmin, the WPA Championships mentioned are only open to men so she really can't figure on this list.

Peter, i aint been on here for a while...i have been very busy with a couple of properties that i bought that are here in Blackpool.... i actually bought them when i was in Manila beleive it or not!
Will be busy renovating them for a couple of months yet.

Anyway, i am number 2 on the WPA rankings....great acheivement although i do say so myself....and if i hadnt had a nightmare in Qatar i would have been number1 !!!
But to be honest, the WPA rankings havent really meant much in the past IE for getting invites into tournys etc........knowing my luck it will probably change when my World 9ball points come off! hahaha.

Getting to number two in the world rankings is a fantastic achievement, I personally see it as a little unfair that you will lose the 1000 points from the WPC 9 Ball without having a chance to defend your position.

Glad to see you are investing your money wisely Daryl, should have bought the properties in Spain and then we would have seen more of you over here!

Do you get sun in Blackpool?

I've just received this press release from the WPA, it's virtually identical to the previous release, although this one does mention paying the top 32 ranked players...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    PRESS RELEASE
    24 November 2008

    WPA RANKING SYSTEM

The WPA Ranking System will go into effect on January 1, 2009. This system is designed to benefit players, organisers, and fans as well as to streamline the operations of the WPA. The WPA will soon launch an updated website to offer far more flexibility and information including the latest updated rankings.

Beginning in 2009 players who wish to compete in our sanctioned events will be required to be members of WPA affiliated organisations. This is a fundamental requirement of any sporting organisation. Other billiard sports, including Carom as well as amateur and professional Snooker, have had this rule for many years and now pool has joined this fraternity.

In 2009, the WPA events will offer prize money to its player members in excess of US $1,500,000. Most of these will carry no entry fees.

The criteria for selecting events for ranking status include:
    ·    all tournaments must be open to all players (invitation, teams, special promotion type events will not count).
    ·    each tournament must have added prize money of at least US$100,000. The WPA Board can use its discretion to change this figure from time to time as required by circumstance.
    ·    all players who participate in qualifiers or the main event must be members of an affiliated WPA association.
    ·    chosen tournaments must be annual events.

Any player who is on our rankings, and does not have membership with a WPA affiliated organisation by January 31 each year, will be removed from the list and lose their points. These points, once lost, are not able to be reinstated.

When a player enters a qualifying tournament, he will be asked if they are a member of an organisation under the WPA umbrella, and if not, they will pay a membership fee together with any entry fee that may apply. That membership fee will be passed on to the respective body from where the player comes.

If a player comes from an area that is not covered by a WPA membership, the Continental member for that region will have a special division to accommodate such players.

Points will be awarded to everyone who competes in every ranking tournament. The points will remain credited to the player until the tournament is played again, or in the event is not held for any reason, to the 31st December.

For tournaments with 128 or more player fields, the top 24 available players on the ranking list will receive automatic entry. These spots will not affect the allocations that WPA members normally receive. Points will be credited at the completion of each ranking event, and positions will be updated accordingly.
The WPA is finalising an arrangement where players in the top 32 (for fields of 128 or more) will receive bonus payments to assist them with their costs. We believe this will be a great incentive for everyone to participate in as many events as possible to earn maximum points and have an opportunity to access this funding.

We look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have on the ranking system. Our contact address is info@wpa-pool.com
