June 24, 2008 Two LIVE Matches Absolutely FREE

The International Pool Tour announces that Alex Pagulayan from the Philippines will face off against the U.K.’s Karl Boyes live on the June 24th free broadcast. All pool fans can watch this live broadcast absolutely free. The feature match in the IPT Ultimate 8-Ball match will be under the grueling IPT conditions of tight pockets (courtesy of Diamond Billiard Products) and slow-nap cloth made by Gorina. Of course, the balls will be perfectly racked every time because we will be using the Sardo M-5000.

Pro9 How did it come about that you were chosen to play Alex Pagulayan for this IPT Ultimate 8-Ball Challenge match, what was the selection process?

Karl I'm not too sure to be honest, I received a phone call from Deno Andrews saying I have got the next challenge match but he didn't say who against... I found out it was Alex at a later date.

Pro9 Alex Pagulayan is a monster player... What do you think your chances are, and what will you be doing to prepare for this event?

Karl I think I have a chance obviously because its 8ball (although its been a while since I played 8ball). I need to try get off to a good start and hopefully run some racks on him, I beat some world class players on the IPT so there's no reason why I cant beat "pagga". Well, I have to play the Euro9Ball Tour first then, I will go to Mick Hill's for the day as he has an IPT table at home - it's just to try get the feel of the equipment again, Pagga beat me 10-9 at the Predator 10ball in Las Vegas so it would be nice to get revenge.

Pro9 You came 3rd at the World Pool Championships, and that would have been the best result ever by a British player in the history of UK 9 Ball, if it wasn't for the fact that Daryl Peach won the championship that year. How do you feel about that?

Karl Well it's just the way it goes. Doesn't matter to me who wins it. As long as I can keep improving and hopefully win it one day. I mean it's the first time I played in the event after winning a qualifier, and I have only been playing for around 2 years... There's a lot to learn about this game, not like 8ball where you just stun the balls in, you have to be very confident to play 9ball and 10ball. Safety is massive too, but the biggest part is keeping your head together which I'm slowly getting better at. Silly things can happen but you've got to stay calm, haha!

Pro9 You were originally an English 8 Ball player, why did you make the switch to American Pool, and at this stage do you think you made a good decision?

Karl I made the switch because the IPT was announced. I thought to myself if I don't risk going for it I might regret it. I was in the England team at the time and was 7th on the IPA Tour, and was just about taking it seriously, but the game in my opinion is boring, it's boring to play and boring to watch so I thought I'm giving the IPT a go, and I'm glad I did. I love American Pool. I think it could be made better but that's another story, and I have met some great people through it, it's full of characters. (I don't like the cheats though, but I have a close eye on them).

Pro9 What equipment are you using at the moment, and are you sponsored by anyone?

Karl I'm using Yogi Bear's Predator at the moment and a BK2, and no... I don't have sponsors - any chance people? Give me a call if you want to discuss sponsorship 07870636010 xx

Pro9 Are you a full-time professional pool player, what would you do if the world of pool didn't exist?

Karl Yes i am. It can be good sometimes but other times you think why bother? Is this all really worth it? If i had a sponsor it would be great as you can just focus on the tournaments instead of the money. If pool didn't exist I would probably be a builder or something, hahah!

Pro9 How do you handle the travelling for pool, can you play good pool with jet lag?

Karl It sometimes gets a bit much, but we have a good laugh so it makes up for it. I'm not the best playing when tired but you just have to get on with it. I had a break from training and put a bit of weight back on, but I'm back training and the weight is coming off... I have a nickname to live up to so can't be fat haha!!!

A big thanks go to Karl Boyes for talking to us, and we'd like to wish him very good luck in Los Angeles. You can watch Karl's epic challenge LIVE and FREE at the IPT website on Tuesday 24 June 2008.
