Torbjörn Blomdahl wins the first Agipi Billiard Masters

The first edition of the Agipi Billiard Masters ended with a fight between of the greatest champions in the world of three cushion: Torbjörn Blomdahl defeated D!ck Jaspers 50-26 in 25 innings. The legend from Sweden, currently on top of the world ranking, left no chance in the final match to the best performer of the tournament, who sadly couldn’t find his rhythm at the worst time of the tournament.

After dominating the group stages and a strong performance against Caudron in the semis, D!ck Jaspers could not stop the Swede in the final match and had to settle for second rank. Nevertheless, his fantastic quality of play was rewarded as he was honoured with all three “performance trophies”: best run (22 and out against Bury), best game (13 innings against Forthomme) and best tournament average (2.212).

With a total purse of 121.450 euros, thanks to the bonus system awarded to performances, the Agipi Billiards Masters became on its first edition the most rewarded tournament in the history of the sport. Jaspers manages to top the prize money list with 28.900 euros, just before Blomdahl with 28.050.

The two champions also top the performance chart with a general average of 2.212 for the Dutchman and 2.048 for the Swede. These two champions put every other competitor in their shadows. Superstars like Semih Sayginer and Frédéric Caudron, who complete the podium, are far behind in money and performance but were both more than happy to leave with 13.300 and 12.250 euros respectively.

The AGIPI Billiard Masters 2008 quarter-finalists with Agipi President, Claude Fath.

The President of Agipi, Claude Fath, was more than delighted with the level of play, even though the prize money of 100,000 euros announced skyrocketed with the high level shown by all competitors. He said with a smile “I’m really happy that the level was so high. Our goal has been reached with a spectacular display from all these champions”. The dream of Mister Fath, to organise an event with the best players and bring it all over the world through a dedicated website with livestream and magazine videos, pictures and news reports, has shown with the tremendous audience results that the sport has a bright future ahead. The Eurosport network will broadcast 6 matches from the group stages plus the semis and the final throughout the coming months. Let’s expect the same success that would set a standard for 3 cushion media coverage.
