Lee Rigby, Kevin Uzzell, Steve Higton and Paddy Mcloughlin.

Uzzell takes the Grand Masters qualifier spot in Leeds

Kevin Uzzell showed his true class by taking the Leeds qualifier spot for the Grand Masters next week at Mickey Flynns.

He was placed under pressure by two of his opponents and pulled out those elusive pressure shots when he needed to.

In the tournament, Steve Higton looked like value for money by first defeating his good friend Andy Worthington and then Simon Widlo in the quarters.

Action from the Steve Higton Versus Simon Widlo match.

What Steve wasn't prepared for was the onslaught delivered by Lee Rigby when he faced Steve in the Semi-final.

Lee pulled out an 8-5 win and truly showed what he was capable of. The other Semi-final was a very high class affair involving Irish number 1, Paddy McGloughlin and Kevin Uzzell. Kevin raced to a 4-2 lead and then a dry break resulted in Paddy then putting together a 4 pack for a 6-4 lead. Kevin really applied the pressure and made some amazing shots that had to be seen in person to appreciate.

Kevin Uzzell, winner of the Leeds Grand Masters Qualifier.

Kevin was victorious with an 8-6 win and a place in the final with Lee. In the final, it was one way traffic from Kevin at the start but then Lee suddenly found his feet and again found himself in the lead.

Lee had a couple of bad rolls that if they had gone his way, may have resulted in a different winner. Having said that, Kevin really did show his true class by remaining calm under pressure and focused on the job in hand.

Kevin always looks very animated when he plays as if he is in doubt about the accuracy of the shot just after he plays it.....and nearly every pot was 'heart of the pocket'. It made me chuckle. Kevin was the 8-6 winner.

Leeds Qualifier Finalists Kevin Uzzell and Lee Rigby

For me, the player of the tournament was Lee Rigby. We all know how good Kevin is but Lee has really shown what he can do and especially after this weekend, cemented himself as a player that can keep up with the big guns.

What a great event it was and thanks must go to our new manager Sue Irons for getting the club and tables in great shape for the event, not to mention preparing a lovely buffet for the players.

Many thanks to all the players that attended, especially to the ones who travelled a long way such as Paddy McLoughlin and Dave Sandford.

Good luck to Kevin on Saturday.
