Tim Singh and Ben Moore prior to the final of the Coventry 9 Ball Open

Rileys Coventry Open 9-Ball Tournament

This Sunday saw the first 9 ball tournament at Hertford Place Rileys in Coventry. A total of 34 entrants from as far away as Kent and Berkshire paid the £5 entry fee to take part.

The initial group stage had six groups of 4 players, and two groups of 5 players. Each match was played best of 10 racks with alternate breaks.

There were a couple of shock exits at the group stage, the most notable being Steve Mullan and Liam Farrell, both big names in the local English Pool leagues proving that the transition between English 8 ball to American 9 ball isn’t always easy.

Two players progressed through from each group to the last 16. The draw was seeded with group winners and group runners up in separate pots.
The round seemed to go to form with 6 of the 8 group winners progressing through to the quarter finals, the biggest surprise result at this stage was possibly local favourite and group winner John “Buzz’in” Beesley being knocked out 7-5 by Simon Smith.

The quarter finals, like the last 16, were played race to 7 racks, alternate breaks, although there were very few run-outs from the break meaning the importance of the break was lost a little bit.

The tightest quarter final saw Ben Moore come back from 5-4 down to knock Jamie White out 7-5, the other three quarter finals saw convincing victories for Tim Singh, Tony David, and Simon Smith.
The first semi final saw the meeting of possibly the two best players so far on the day, Tim Singh cruised through the match at breakneck speed defeating Tony David by 8 racks to 2.
The second semi final was certainly a much tighter affair with a lot more safety play, Ben Moore eventually victorious 8-6 against Simon Smith.

A crowd gathered round the table to watch the final, and they weren’t disappointed. Tim Singh playing at his usual lightning pace rushed into an 8-4 lead in the race to 9 but Ben Moore had shown great resilience in the quarter and semi finals, and again was proving a hard opponent to beat. At 8-5 it looked all over with Tim flying round the table, until he ran out of position on the 7 ball, Ben capitalised on this mistake and clawed back another rack. By the time the clock reached 10pm Ben had pulled the match back to 8-8 but Tim had the break in the 17th and final rack. After a dry break and a brief safety exchange, Ben held his nerve to run the balls out from the 4 to take the final 9-8.

The trophy and £85 first prize were presented by the manager of the club, Bob Burrows. For his efforts Tim Singh received the runners up trophy and the £40 runners up prize. Losing semi finalists were awarded £12.50, and losing quarter finalists received £5.
