Niall Sweeney (Roscommon) the 2006 Co. Donegal Junior Open Champion.

Roscommon Teenager Crowned Co. Donegal Junior 9-Ball Champion

Niall Sweeney who hails from Cootehall in Boyle Co. Roscommon has made history by becoming the very first player from Roscommon county to ever to win an official ranking pool tournament in the history of Ireland’s American 8 & 9 Ball Pool Tour.

The Roscommon teenager potted his way to victory winning his first official junior 9-ball ranking tournament on Ireland’s American 8 & 9 Ball Pool Tour at the weekend defeating John Mc Ginley (Donegal) 7-4 in the final of the 2006 Co. Donegal Junior Open 9-Ball Pool Championships.

"Read More..." for the details.

Players who reached the last-16 of the 2006 Co. Donegal Open Junior 9Ball Championships.

Niall who is mostly known for his skills playing 8-ball (reds & yellows) and who represented Ireland at the 2006 World 8-Ball Pool Championships in Blackpool earlier this year put in a tremendous performance throughout the tournament to be crowned champion.

Niall topped his group in the round robin system by winning two matches out of three over some of Ireland's top junior players which also included a 4-3 defeat in his first match at the hands of John Haigney (Tyrone).

From that point onwards the Roscommon teenager settled down and picked himself up to play some outstanding pool to win his next two matches over PJ Starts and Barry Cunningham on a 4-3 and 4-2 score-line to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.

The four semi-finalists LtoR: John Mc Ginley (Donegal), Niall Donnelly (Tyrone),
Dylan Smyth (Tyrone) and Niall Sweeney (Roscommon).

The knockout stages still saw this Roscommon junior cueist keep up his performance to record further victories over Barry Cunningham and another "up and coming" prospect Dylan Smyth (Tyrone) to make his way into his first ever ranking tournament final, where he also played tremendous pool to run a 7-4 winner over Donegal’s John Mc Ginley to be crowned the 2006 Co. Donegal Junior 9-Ball Pool Champion.

This junior tournament victory for Niall puts him into the top six in Ireland’s official junior 9-ball rankings and in line to represent Ireland at the 2007 European junior 9-ball championships in Germany next year competing against 37 other European countries in 8 & 9 ball plus straight pool events.

Ireland’s American 8 & 9 Ball Pool Tour would like to see more players of men, ladies, wheelchair, over 40’s and juniors throughout Roscommon as well as the 32 counties of Ireland to come forward and join as well as play in these well organised official ranking tournaments which is set in place in all categories.

We would also like to hear from venues anywhere throughout each county that has American 9-ball pool tables to also come forward and Ireland’s American 8 & 9 Ball Pool Tour will bring there tournaments to your venue.

If anyone, maybe it be men’s, ladies, wheelchair, over 40’s or junior players requires more information on this fastest growing cue-sport game in Ireland please log onto the tours official website at www.irelands9balltour.com and all information is there for everyone to see such as official ranking tournaments, official tour rankings, reports, results, photos etc or call 07776365059 or from the Rep of Ireland (0044) 7776365059 and full details will be given.
