Staveley continues to be the man in form at Total9ball

Saturday 23rd May saw Total9ball return to the Hurricane Room in St Albans for episode four of the 2015 Amateur Series. For the fourth event running T9B put together 32 of the best amateur players the UK has to offer, with players travelling from all over the country to be part of this prestigious Series, which is now in its 6th season. These events really do take some winning.

Matches kicked off at 10.30am and as always it was hard to predict a winner of this handicap event. The results were flying in before we knew it.

Total9ball are always looking for ways to increase the fun factor for players and spectators. For this event we introduced the T9B pick 10 prediction side game. The entry was £5, the idea was to predict the winners of 10 selected matches with the entrant with the most correct match winners collecting the cash prize. All money paid in was paid out and it was Mark Williams who collected the £70 prize. Mark predicted 8 out of 10 matches correctly. Well done Mark!

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

I guess the best place to start the main event report was with Tom Staveley who was involved in a close 1st round encounter which saw him taken all the way to hill-hill by Steve Chick. Tom in the end won the battle and advanced to round two. The other side of the draw saw Staveley impressively despatch an in form Filip Krawczk 7v2. Come back of the opening round went to Phil Wildman as he delivered a sucker punch to Ashik Nathwani, Phil trailed 2v6 but was brave and clawed the match back rack by rack to progress 7v6. Wildman really pushed his luck as his second first round match also ended 7v6 in his favour this time against experienced Bob Harris from Portsmouth. Mark Williams started the event well recording two first round victories 7v5 and 7v2 against Alan Hopkins and Jamie Hobbs respectively. Mark Newell of Wycombe also started the event the way he would of liked with two wins from two matches, Paul Taylor (7v3) and Veslin Papradanov (7v6) were his victim's. Chris Seville and Nick Hampton also completed first round double wins. it was great to see Chris Parker back at the table after a long absence away from the sport, he hasn't lost any of his flair though as he fizzed the white off multiple rails against Zoltan Kojska winning the match 7 racks to 2. Steve Chick also produced a very well timed golden break to end Ashik's event. Steve waited until he reached the hill before producing the dream golden break to book up a space in round two 7v5.

Next up after all opening round matches were complete the Total9ball breakdish took centre stage. T9B boasts the biggest break dish pot in the UK at all amateur series events, this weeks prize was a total of £625 now bearing in mind Ashik Nathwani just a couple of events ago cleared the table for £415 I'd say the breakdish is in a very healthy position. First up this time around was Chris Seville. Chris was shooting for an awesome £50 per ball and a nice bonus of £125 for the 10ball clearance. Unfortunately for Chris it was a dry break on this occasion. Next up was Mark Parker, Mark smashed the break and managed to sink a ball but was horribly hooked on the one ball and therefore collected the money. Finally a bonus player was drawn to play for £5 per ball and a £50 bonus, the final player was Mark Newell but again he offered only a dry break and therefore the total remaining pot of £575 rolls over to event 5 held at St Albans on Saturday 27th June.

So where to start on round two... Winners of these matches would seeded players for Event 5. Only Chris Seville, Phil Wildman and Tom Staveley managed to complete round two without defeat. Chris Seville looked sharp and dropped just 6 racks across his two matches, He reported scores of 7v3 and 7v3 Aslam Abubaker and Filip Krawczk were on the receiving end of these results. Phil Wildman punished a few missed long pots by Chris Parker winning 7v3 and made the most of a tremendous almost embarrassing amount of luck against Lionel Brown 7v2. Tom Staveley was cruising and looking like the best player in the building as he smashed any players who got in his way... first Mark Newell 7v2 and then Paul Taylor 7v3. Steve Chick seemed to be on form as he ended Steve Davison's event 7v5 while Brian Cassidy took a win from Nick Hampton also 7v5.

Seeded players for Amateur Series Event 5 are as follows:-

Left Side Right Side

Bob Harris    Brian Cassidy
Chris Seville Chris Seville
Mark Williams    Mark Newell
Nick Hampton Mikko Tuomi
Phil Wildman Phil Wildman
Tom Staveley    Shakz Islam
Veselin Papradanov    Steve Chick
Zoltan Kojsza    Tom Staveley

The last 16 of this event was the round were we lost one of the players still on course for the double, this means winning all matches and therefore collecting the winners and runners up prize money and ranking points at the end of the event. Tom Staveley managed to sneak pasted Mark Williams 7v6. Mark in the round prior had a lovely timed piece of luck as he missed a simple pot but fluked the ball in another pocket against Mark Parker at 6v6 and cleared up. Tom didn't allow this to happen again. It was Chris Seville who got the better of Staveley 7v4 but this wouldn't be the last time they met in this event, would Tom get his revenge. Chris also ended Vesilin Papradanov's good run in this tournament 7v4. Phil Wildman dropped 4 racks to each player his matches as he eliminated Mark Newell 7v4 and Zoltan Kojsza 7v4. Nick Hampton took Bob Harris out of the event with a nail biting 7v6 victory while Steve Chick was still looking very good as he beat Mikko Tuomi 7v3.

Quarter Final time and some great players were still involved in this event. Chris Seville's and Phil Wildmans jackpot dreams were dashed in this round... in fact crushed. Chris Seville took a 7v3 revenge battering by Tom Staveley while Wildman was smashed 7v0 by Nick Hampton. Phil was then on the receiving end of another drubbing as Chris Seville pounced and inflicted a cool 7v1 result on Wildman. Steve Chick produced another excellent 7v4 win result over Brian Cassidy So we now knew it would be Chris Seville, Nick Hampton, Steve Chick and Tom Staveley battling it out in the Semi Finals.

Nick Hampton took on Tom Staveley, Nick's results having been getting a lot better of late but it was going to take a great performance late on in the day to stop Staveley now looking at his best. Nick started the match well but then Tom produced some top pool reaching yet another final 7v3. Chris Seville was also victorious by a 7v3 scoreline and therefore its would be Chris against Tom for the 3rd time of the day.

Match One Chris Seville 7v4 Tom Staveley
Match Two Chris Seville 3v7 Tom Staveley
Match Three Chris Seville ?v? Tom Staveley

So the all important decider and the Final of Total9ball Amateur Series Event 4. Both players have won T9B events this season and therefore have already qualified for the Champion Of Champions event. Therefore we will have our first vacant position in that event. Shortly T9B will announce how that will be decided. The Final kicked off, it was a close cagey start to the match but with both Semi Finals ending 7v3 it would be rude for the final not to follow suit. It was Tom Staveley who ran out the impressive winner of Event 4. Very well done to both players, you are both not only improving at each event but your constituently playing a very high level of pool week in and week out, its great to see. This result boasted Tom to 2nd in the rankings. He is trailing Phil Wildman by 20 points. Chris Seville leaps into 3rd just 3 points behind Tom. This season thanks to Hurricane Room sponsorship T9B are paying players ranked 1st (£250) 2nd (£150) and 3rd (£100) at the end of the season. Remember just each players best 6 out of 8 results count so its still all to play for.

Thanks to Hurricane Room St Albans for again looking after us, Thanks to our sponsors Dynamic Billard, again Hurricane Room and Talisman Tips, Thanks to Nicole Hansen for running the tournament desk and keeping the event running smoothly, Thanks to Mark Parker for his work behind the camera and to all players who supported this event.
