Diaz, Ouschan and Tahti grab the last titles in this year’s EC
The 9-ball titles at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes have been taken by Francisco Diaz (ESP) in the men’s division, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) in the women’s division and Jouni Tahti (FIN) in the wheelchair division.
In the men’s division, Francisco Diaz had to battle it out with Karol Skowerski (POL). The match was quite even from the start. Both players have played an excellent tournament so far. Consequently, the quality level was pretty high. During the course of the match, Diaz showed to have the balls rolling in favor of him. 9:5 was the final result in favor of Diaz. „I really enjoy this title very much“, stated Diaz after the final, „I love 9-ball and 10-ball and it was a very hard way to achieve this title.“

The women’s final was played between Jasmin Ouschan and Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL). It was already the third encounter of the two players. Ouschan had won the final in straight pool while Khodjaeva won the final in 10-ball. The match was also pretty close but Ouschan managed to get a shot at the title when she was leading 6:5. However, she missed an easy 8-ball which was „a head thing“ as she mentioned after the match. This brought Khodjaeva back to the table and she tied the match at 6:6. The last rack, Ouschan had the break shot. When broke and ran the table, winning the title and also defending it from last year as well.
In the wheelchair division, Jouni Tahti had to face Tony Southern (GBR). That match started out very slowly. After over an hour, the score was only 3:3. The tournament direction decided to have a shot clock on the match. That was obviously in Tahti’s favor. he seemed to get along with the shot clock much better and won the final and the title with 7:4.

Tomasz Kaplan eliminates Siekkinen for a spot in the last 32
In a tough match in the single elimination round of the final 64 player’s at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Vale do Lobo, Portugal, Tomasz Kaplan (POL) ousted Jani Siekkinen (FIN) with 9:5.
Kaplan had to take the detour over the loser’s side where he eliminated Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) earlier today. He was then drawn against Jani Siekkinen. The match started equal for both players. After 4 racks, the score was 2:2. Then, Kaplan was able to achieve a 3-point advantage over Siekkinen, taking a 5:2 lead. The Finish took a time-out and came back with fresh motivation. He won two racks and got to 4:5, before Kaplan won the next three racks to get on the hill with 8:5. That broke Siekkinen’s neck. He won one more rack before Kaplan closed the book on the match to win with 9:5.
Earlier today, Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) overpowered John Torres (SUI) by a hair’s breadth with 9:8. Dzimitry Chuprov (BLR) surprisingly won against Tomas Larsson (SWE) with 9:8 and made his way to the single elimination stage of the final 64 players where he lost to Miquel Silva (POR) with 6:9. Defending Champion Niels Feijen (NED) was with one foot in the grave already. He was at 8:8 with Fabio petroni (ITA) when he was able to win the deciding rack and proceed to the next round with a 9:8 victory over Petroni. Serge Voice (ROM) ousted Radoslaw Babica (POL) from the tournament with a 9:7 victory in the single elimination. Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) managed to remain victorious over Mario He (AUT) with a result of 9:4. In an all-Russian clash, Ruslan Chinakhov defeated his teammate Konstantin Stepanov with 9:3. Alexander Kazakis (GRE) send the „Czech Attack“ Roman Hybler (CZE) home with 9:4.
In the women’s division, defending Champion Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) is through to the sin glee elimination round. She won today over Veronika Hubrtova (CZE) with 7:4 in the winner’s qualification round. She’ll be joined by Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) who clearly smashed Ana Mazhirina (RU)S with 7:2 in the same round. Wesolowska’s teammate Czuprynska (POL) took down Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 7:3.
In the wheelchair division, Jouni Tahti (FIN) and Fred Dinsmore (IRE) are both already on the loser’s side. In loser’s round 2, they both won their matches. Tahti eliminated Eduard Karamatic (CRO) 7:2 while Dinsmore defeated Daniel Lee (GBR) 7:3. Dinsmore is playing Henrik Larsson (SWE) tonight for a spot in the quarter-finals. Tahti will have to deal with Manfred Gattinger (GER).
Tonight, the player’s party will take place. On that occasion, the EPBF Player of the Year 2014 will be disclosed to the public.
The tournament will continue tomorrow at 11:00 local time with men’s and women’s 9-ball matches. The final matches in all three divisions will be played at 17:30 local time.

Kazakis wins against Ouschan in a heartbreaker
Alexander Kazakis (GRE) defeated Albin Ouschan (AUT) in a breathtaking match with 9:8.
The individual matches in the 9-ball competition have commenced at the Dynamic Billard European Championships 2015 in Vale do Lobo, Portugal. One feature match was the clash between the two Euro-Tour heroes Alexander Kazakis and Albin Ouschan. In the beginning, things looked bright for Kazakis. He was up 6:4 and 7:5. Suddenly, Ouschan got in better gear and even overtook Kazakis with 8:7, being on the hill. The 16th rack was spectacular. Safety shots werde exchanged and all of a sudden Kazakis found himself with a thin cut on the 2-ball. The 9-ball way lying close to the 2-ball. Kazakis fired the 2-ball in and the 9-ball went also in the corner pocket. „I did not expect that to happen“, said Kazakis with a smile after the match, „the 9-ball going in in that situation was pure luck for me“, admitted Kazakis. That point leveled the match at 8:8. Ouschan broke and the layout on the table was not good. Again, safeties were exchanged until Ouschan attempted a jump-shot on the 1 -ball. He pocketed it but got unlucky since the cue ball hid behind three other balls and forced him to go for another jump-shot. He hit the 2-ball but left an open position for Kazakis. Then, the Greek played a clever game with balls pocketed whenever needed, otherwise strategic safety positions. In the end, Ouschan left an open table to Kazakis when he tried to escape from a safety on the 4-ball. Kazakis ran the rack and ended the match 9:8 in his favor, sending Ouschan to the loser’s round.
Other remarkable results from today include Serge Das (BEL) winning 9:8 over Josip Susnjara (CRO). Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) sneaked past Ivo Aarts (NED) by a whisker with 9:8.
In the women’s division, Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) defeated local player Vania Franco (POR) 7:6 after having trailed 2:5 in that match already.

8-ball Gold Medals for Feijen, Roos and Dinsmore
The titles have been awarded at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair athletes in Vale do Lobo, Portugal. Niels Feijen (NED), Caroline Roos (SWE) and Fred Dinsmore (IRE) won their respective division.
The men’s final
Niels Feijen had to deal with Karol Skowerski (POL). The match was as close as expected. Skowerski and Feijen had equal chances and the match went ahead a bit slow. For that reason, the tournament direction decided to have a shot clock on the match at 4:4. The match went along and at 6:5 to Feijen, he ran a dry break from Skowerski. That brought him 7:5 lead. Skowerski pulled one rack back, but Feijen snatched the needed point in the 14th rack, winning the match and the title with 8:6.
The women’s final
Caroline Roos has never won a Gold Medal at European Championships in individuals so far. Her opponent, Line Kjoersvik (NOR) has a massive record of 28 Medals in total out of which 6 were Gold Medals. So the odds looked better for Kjoersvik. She had taken out the Khodjaeva sisters (BEL) and Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) for her seat in the final match today. Roos defeated Hubrtova (CZE), Antonijevic (CRO) and Czuprynska (POL) for her ticket in the Championship match. The final then took an unexpected turn. After three racks, the score was 3:0 for Roos. She was already half way there before Kjoersvik was even able to open her account. The point for 3:1 was answered by Roos with snatching two more racks, taking a 5:1 lead. That was almost it. Kjoersvik managed to win one more rack before Roos closed the book on that final match and won with 6:2, taking her first European Gold Medal in the individuals.
The wheelchair final
Fred Dinsmore was the clear favorite over Daniel Luton (GBR) who must be considered to be the underdog in the final match. Dinsmore dominated from the very beginning and Luton could not find any suitable means to stop Dinsmore from expanding his lead. 5:2 was the clear end result in favor of Dinsmore who won his fifth Gold Medal on European wheelchair level.

Remarkable results from earlier today include Albin Ouschan (AUT) defeating Ralf Souquet (GER) in the round of the final 32 players with 8:5. In the same round, Niels Feijen wiped the floor with Denis Grabe (EST), winning 8:1.
In the round of the last 16 players, Zrinka Antonijevic (CRO) smashed Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 6:0. Line Kjoersvik won the match with Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) with 6:3. The „dark horse“ of the men’s 8-ball event was probably Jani Uski (FIN). He ousted defending Champion Nick van den Berg (NED) completely surprising with 8:5. Serge Das ended Tomasz Kaplan's (POL) hopes for a medal in 8-ball with 8:6 in the same round. Alexander Kazakis (GRE) showed no mercy for the „Czech Attack“ Roman Hybler, winning 8:0 over the Czech.
Diana Khodjaeva managed to defeat exceptional pool player from Austria Jasmin Ouschan with 6:3.

Team Russia and Poland win Gold
The team competition has come to an end at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair Athletes.
In the men’s team, Poland with Karol Skowerski, Tomasz Kaplan, Mariusz Skoneczny and Mieszko Fortunski won the Gold Medal over team The Netherlands. The final match was a tough fight. The Netherlands took an early lead with Nick van den Berg winning the 9-ball 9:3 over Mariusz Skoneczny. Then, Tomasz Kaplan leveled the match in defeating Ivo Aarts with 8:4 in 8-ball.
The 10-ball match between Karol Skowerski and Niels Feijen was close, but Skowerski had always a small lead. At 7:5 for Skowerski, Feijen tried to bank the 1-ball in. He pocketed the 1-ball but hit it too straight. The cue ball scratched. Then, Skowerski took the chance and ran out with ball in hand, winning the 10-ball with 8:5 and the team match with 2:1.

In the women’s team, the Russian women with Kristina Tkach, Daria Sirotina and Ana Mazhirina were the Gold Medallists. The final match with Norway was pretty close. While Mazhirina could win her 8-ball over Line Kjoersvik relatively easy with 6:3, Martine Christiansen was leading in 9-ball over Tkach throughout the match. Christiansen had even a 5:1 lead over Tkach in a race to 7. But Tkach showed strength while Christiansen showed nerves. At 6:6, Christiansen was at the table with two more balls to go. She dramatically missed the 8-ball and the chance to go into the shootout with the Russians. Tkach ran out and won the team match with 2:0.
Earlier today in the 8-ball individuals, several interesting as well as unexpected results occurred. In the women’s division, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) had a tough match with Tamara Peeters-Rademakers (NED) on the loser’s side. Ouschan lost to Kristina Tkach (RUS) yesterday. Against Peeters-Rademakers, the score was 4:4 after 8 racks. The Dutch player broke and scratched very unfortunate on the break shot. What she did not know at that time, was that it was her last visit for the match. Ouschan broke and ran for a 5:4 lead. Then, she had her own break shot coming up which she perfectly used and scored another point for her account. That victory brought her the 6:4 final match result against Peeters-Rademakers.
Defending Champion in the women’s division, Daria Sirotina (RUS) is already out of the 8-ball. Yesterday, she lost 5:6 to totally unheralded Laura Frances (ESP). Today, she could not find any weapon against Diana Khodjaeva (BEL) and lost again 4:6.
In the men’s division, the tournament was already down to the single elimination stage of the final 64 players today. Defending Champion Nick van den Berg (NED) is still in, winning 8:1 over Michal Hajduch (SVK). He will play Francisco-Diaz (ESP) in the next round. Nick Ekonomopoulos (GRE) has suffered a shattering defeat. He lost 7:8 to Tomas Larsson (SWE). Another shattering defeat was handed to David Alcaide (ESP). The sender was Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) who won the match with Alcaide 8:6. BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER) eliminated Christian Sparrenloev-Fischer (SWE) 8:5 and will now play Albin Ouschan (AUT) who sneaked past Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) with 8:7.
In the wheelchair division, only a few 8-ball matches were played today. Jouni Tahti (FIN) lost the winner’s qualification round match to Tony Southern (GBR) with 4:5. Southern is the first semi-finalist in the wheelchair division. He is joined by Kurt Deklerck (BEL) who won 5:3 over Roy Kimberley (GBR).
The tournament will continue tomorrow at 09:00 local time with men’s and women’s 8-ball matches. The final matches in 8-ball in all three divisions will be played at 20:00 local time.

Skowerski sneaks past Chinakhov
In the 8-ball competition, Karol Skowerski (POL) has won a heartbreaker over Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) with 8:7.
The match was pretty leveled throughout the beginning. None of the two contestants was able to achieve an advantage over the other. After 11 racks, the score was 6:5 in favor of Chinakhov with his own break coming up. He had the chance to run out and get on the hill, put an immense portion of pressure on the Polish. But instead he was really unlucky. After his break shot, the table was open but the 4-ball blocked the cue ball in a way that it was not possible to play any ball at all. Chinakhov went for a rail first shot and fouled. That gave Skowerski ball in hand. Skowerski ran out and ran another rack with his own break to get on the hill with a 7:6 lead over Chinakhov himself. Then Chinakhov broke and ran. But it was all in vain. At 7:7, it was Skowerski’s break and he used it, winning the match by a hair’s breadth with 8:7.
In the women’s winner’s round 1, Tatiana Vaitkiene (LIT) defeated Barbara Zuddas (ITA) with 6:1 in a match that was dominated by nerves from both sides. Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) won her match over Simone Kuenzl (Germany) clearly with 6:1.
In the women’s team competition winner’s qualification round, team Russia defeated tema Norway with 2:0. The match between Austria and Switzerland went to a shootout which was won by team Austria.
The tournament will continue tomorrow at 09:00 local time with men’s 8-ball matches. At 17:30, the semifinals team men and women will be played with the finals to follow at 20:00 local time.
