Day 3 - Feijen wins Dynamic Billard Italian Open

With a clear 9:2 victory over Nick Malai (GRE) in the final match, Niels Feijen (NED) took the title of the Dynamic Billard Italian Open Champion 2015 at the Best Western Premium BHR Hotel in Treviso, Italy, today.

Feijen left no chance for Malai in the final. In the beginning, Malai missed some easy shots which was punished by Feijen straight away. It looked like Malai got really frustrated, being in his chair for so long watching Feijen take rack after rack. In fact, Malai could not get a foot on the floor in the final match. Therefore, the result of 9:2 in favor of Feijen is fully deserved.

After winning the 9-Ball World Championships and the straight pool European Championships last year, Feijen had his last Euro-Tour victory in June 2013 in Austria. He was in the final against Nick van den Berg in December but he lost that quite clear. „I got tortured last time by Nick, so I am really happy that I was able to win it this time“, stated Feijen. „I think that around 40 guys can win a Euro-Tour. It is one the devils playground of a competition. I am very happy to win this tournament“, added Feijen.

Souquet prevents van den Berg from taking another title in Treviso

Ralf Souquet (GER), BCA Hall of Famer, has just ousted current number one Euro-Tour player Nick van den Berg (NED) with a very convincing 9:4 victory in the single elimination round of the final 32 players.

Many people said that this would have been a nice final match for the Dynamic Billard Italian Open 2015. Souquet versus van den Berg is alway promising high class pool billiard. And that’s what it was this time, too. However, it was a bit one sided. Van den Berg made some mistakes in the early stage of the match whereas Souquet performed rock solid and left no doubts that he is on a mission here in Treviso. „I think I really played a pretty good match here“ stated Souquet, „I felt very confident and I guess the score of 9:4 says it all“. Souquet will now proceed to the round of the last 16 players which will be played tomorrow morning at 10:00 CET where he will have to deal with Philipp Stojanovic (CRO).

Another thriller in the round of the last 32 players was the match between Karol Skowerski (POL) and former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER). Ortmann was always leading throughout the match. 5:2, 7:6 and 8:7 were his advantages over Skowerski but the Polish player did not give up. He tied the match at 8:8. There, a safety battle evolved between the two contestants with the better end for Ortmann. 9:8 was the result that put Ortmann in the next round where he will face Juan Carlos Exposito (ESP).

One remarkable match earlier today was the match between Serge Das (BEL) and David Alcaide (ESP) in the winner’s qualification round. Das got momentum first and played strong while Alcaide missed some easy shots. That resulted in a 6:2 lead for Das after eight racks. Then, Alcaide caught up a bit, pulling back some racks from Das. After 11 racks, Das’ lead was down to 6:5. They both took another rack and at 7:6, Das missed a big point by missing a makable 3-ball. Alcaide consequently used that chance and tied the match at 7:7. It looked like he had turned the tide in the match but just when he was about to get going, he scratched. Das went on the hill 8:7. The next rack saw some mistakes by both players. Alcaide left a very tough thin cut for Das on the 6-ball. Das went for it and perfectly made it. He ran the rack and finished the match with a justified 9:7 victory that took him into the round of the last 32 players. There, he had another heartbreaker against a player from Sp ain, Juan Carlos Exposito (ESP). The match went hill-hill and at 8:8, Exposito missed the 7-ball because he ran out of position. However, he was lucky and left no shot for Das who could not even play the 7-ball since it was blocked by the 8-ball. Das went for rail first but left an open table with three easy shots for Exposito who finished and eliminated Das with 9:8.

Alcaide had to take the detour over the loser’s side which turned out not to be a walk in the park for him. He just made it over Wojciech Sroczynski (POL) 9:8 to also sneak into the single elimination round of the final 32 players. There he met Imran Majid (GBR) and won 9:7.

Last 16 players line-up

Marco Teutscher (NED) v Perfrancesco Garzia (ITA)
David Alcaide (ESP) v Karl Boyes (GBR)
Oliver Ortmann (GER) v Juan Carlos Exposito (ESP)
Bruno Muratore (ITA) v Niels Feijen (NED)
Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) v Nick Malai (GRE)
Petri Makkonen (FIN) v Denis Grabe (EST)
Philipp Stojanovic (CRO) v Ralf Souquet (GER)
Mario He (AUT) v Mark Gray (GBR)

The tournament will continue tomorrow morning at 10:00 CET.

Favorites on track in Treviso

The first day of the Dynamic Billard Italian Open has come to an end. Most favorites today have made their way more or less smoothly through to the winner’s qualification round.

The number one player of the Euro-Tour rankings, Nick van den Berg (NED), played his first match with Mariusz Skoneczny (POL). What looked like a clear whitewash turned into a thriller. After seven racks, the scoreboard showed 7:0 in favor of van den Berg. Everything seemed to be „as expected“. But then Skoneczny decided not to get slaughtered. He pulled back rack after rack from van den Berg. After 15 racks, he was within one rack with a score of 7:8 in favor of van den Berg. But then the Euro-Tour leader played a very good safety and forced a foul on Skoneczny. Completely exhausted and frustrated, the Polish gave up the rack and the match and allowed van den Berg to claim a 9:7 victory. „It looked quite good in the beginning for me“, stated van den Berg. „But then he had nothing to lose anymore and he went for every shot. And he made them all. I hardly got to the table before the score was suddenly 8:7“, added van den Berg. „Luckily I played a good safety shot whic h in the end brought me the match“. In the next round, van den Berg defeated Steve Leisen (LUX) with 9:4.

Another player who can be counted into the circle of favorites is Niels Feijen (NED). He won his two matches today, 9:3 over Andrej Seroshtan (RUS) and 9:6 over Michal Turkowski (POL).

Newcomer Kevin Becker (GER) made some noise today at the tournament. He won his first round match over Michele Bianchini (ITA) 9:4 and then took down Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP) 9:6. Becker, who is playing his second Euro-Tour only, became third last time here in Treviso in December. „My goal is to get to the top 16 players here“, says Becker. „A tournament with so many players, this would be a great achievement. Anything beyond that would just be great.“

BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER) expectedly advanced to the winner’s qualification round with victories over Georg Hoeberl (AUT) 9:3 and Woytek Trajdos (POL) 9:4.

Though most of the big names in European pool have made their way through the winner’s side so far, it can be seen that several young and new names need to be taken into serious consideration. Maxim Dudanets (RUS) and Tobias Bongers (GER) are definitely players to watch closer in the near future.

The tournament will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET.
