Parker back to winning ways

Sunday 7th September saw Total9ball try out a new venue in the capital. Hurricane Room Colindale played great hosts as they invited us to their venue to try out the newly refurbished club. The venue was very nice and the tables played great. The club also had free parking available outside, Total9ball are looking forward to adding this club as a new venue for the 2015 season.

This was the second event for Total9ball's new open Sunday series named Golden Sundays, The Road To St Albans. This is a four event series with prize money at each event and a Grand Final Open to all players who attend one of the four qualifying events. Each event is held at a different club and a different format is used for each time. Remaining clubs are High Wycombe and Wickford. The Grand Finals will be held in December at our home... The Hurricane Room St Albans.

The event held this weekend used a double elimination format, giving each player two chances to win the main prize. The first round of matches kicked off at 10.30am and the first score back was an impressive 7v2 result for Courtney Symons against Mark Parker, a tough first match for Parker but could his day improve?. Phil Wildman's day began with a bang as he gave Shaun Storry very few chances to advance 7v2. Brian Cassidy looked in good shape as he eliminated Amateur Series event eight winner Ashik Nathwani to the losers side of the draw 7v5. Tom Staveley had to battle hard and use all of his competition experience to prevail against new player to T9B events Jed Thompson. Craig Osborne was set the task of defying a -5 handicap at this event and he made a classy start as usual Osborne 7 Joe Granville 4. Great to see Paul Taylor back in action, he was drawn in the only preliminary match which he won 7v4, Paul followed this with a decent 7v3 win over Ricky Collett.

After all first round matches were completed the side games began. Shaun Storry and Courtney Symons were pulled out of the hat to take on the £190 10ball break dish event. The prize was broken down to £15 per ball with a £40 bonus for the clearance. Shaun unfortunately broke dry, Courtney sunk a ball off the break but was hooked, he attempted the jump shot but missed. As nobody collected a prize another player was drawn to try at £5 per ball and that player was Phil Wildman. Phil hit the perfect break and the clearance was all there, he ran out to collect a £50 prize.

The second and final side event was the one rack shoot-out. Brian Cassidy took down this event beating Ashik Nathwani in the Final. Brian collected £40 while Ashik gained £15.

On to the qualifying matches on the winners side of the event. Paul Taylor played very well as he made sure he would be a winners side qualifier, his result was 7v5 against Brian Cassidy. Robin Cripps took advantage of unusual mistakes made by Courtney Symons, the scoreline was 7v1. Tom Staveley made full use of the handicap against Craig Osborne. Craig managed to get level for the first time in the match at 3v3 but then Tom pulled away again to win 7v4. Phil Wildman won 7 straight racks from a 0v4 deficit against Veselin Papradanov. The losers side qualifying match results were as follows. Jed Thompson 7v5 Brian Cassidy, Shaun Storry 7v0 Courtney Symons, Craig Osborne 7v2 Ricky Collett and Mark Parker 7v6 Veselin Papradanov.

At this stage the Quarter Finals draw was made with winners qualifiers drawn against losers qualifiers. Tom Staveley had a repeat match from earlier against the talented Jed Thompson, Tom had the upper hand and looked the only winner as he was 6v4 up but Jed wasn’t going to give up without a fight as he levelled the match at hill-hill. The final rack was a tactical affair, Tom created a chance for himself but a local walked across his shot at crucial time causing Tom to make a mistake. Jed cleared the remaining balls to book his space in the Semi Final. Phil Wildman took on Shaun Storry for the second time in the event and again played faultless pool as he marched on to the Semi Finals 7v1. It was a shame but a holiday in Greece wouldn’t wait as Robin Cripps down 3v0 at the time against Mark Parker had to withdraw to make sure he wouldn’t miss his flight. Paul Taylor lead for the whole match against Craig Osborne. Craig looked shattered after playing so many more racks than any other player due to his handicap, he did however put his tiredness behind him to tie the match at 6v6. Paul had the deciding break and handled the pressure brilliantly to break dish.

It was Semi Final time and the matches got under way at the same time on tables adjacent to each other. Phil took on Jed Thompson and although he got close he never managed to get level with Thompson. Jed struck gold again 7v5. Mark Parker looked really committed to the job ahead as he controlled his match with Paul Taylor winning convincingly 7v3.

So there you have it... Two players in the Final from the losers bracket. Mark and Jed agreed to divide up the prize money and play a race to three racks for the trophy. Mark seemed by this point to be buzzing as he took the match and the title 3v1. Well done Mark, great to see you back in such scintillating form.

Again thanks to the club for having us, to Kim for running the tournament desk and to Mark Parker for taking some brilliant photos of the players in action in between his matches.
