Monica Webb takes the title in the women’s Euro-Tour

Monica Webb (USA) just won the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open Women Euro-Tour event in beautiful St. Johann/Pg., Austria, with a convincing 7:3 victory over favored hometown hero Jasmin Ouschan (AUT).

It has been Webb’s tournament from the very beginning. She played great throughout the whole event. Results like 7:4 over #2 ranked player Ana Mazhirina (RUS), 7:3 over #5 ranked Ina Kaplan (GER), 7:2 over multiple European and World Champion Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) and 7:3 against another multiple European and World Champion Jasmin Ouschan in the final demonstrated her domination in this event. Although being handicapped with a foot in plaster she performed better than ever in Europe. „I felt great in this event“, stated Webb after the match. „I have practiced a lot during the last months and I think it is paying off now“. When asked about her plans for the future, she answered with a smile: „I will definitely continue playing the Euro-Tour“.

Jasmin Ouschan’s way into the final was also quite impressive. Two victories over Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) with 7:3 and 7:5 and a 7:2 victory over Line Kjoersvik (NOR) are among the impressive results from Ouschan.

The final match however was not Ouschan’s. She committed too many mistakes which was very unusual for Ouschan. For example, she left the 9-ball hanging over the pocket and missed several easy shots. Maybe the pressure to win on home soil is too big on her. However, her opponent benefitted from these mistakes. „I think I also had some luck in the right moments“, commented Webb modestly. But luck belongs to any sports and her performance here did not have too much to do with luck. She was simply better than the rest of the field. She is a very modest person and her victory is absolutely deserved.

This concludes the coverage from Alpina Wellness and Sports Hotel in Alpendorf, St. Johann/Pg., Austria. All results and more info can be found online at www.eurotourwomenonline.eu .

DAY 3

Underdog Denis Grabe wins Dynamic Billard Austrian Open

Denis Grabe from Estonia just won the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open 2014 with a clear 9:1 defeat over Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) in the final match.

Ekonomopoulos had to deal with #1 ranked player in the semi-final, Nick van den Berg (NED). He played really strong and did not allow van den Berg to find his game even though it was van den Berg’s birthday today. To the contrary, the balls really rolled in Ekonomopoulos’ favor and the end result of 9:2 in favor of Ekonomopoulos showed how clear his victory was today.

Denis Grabe had tougher work ahead. In the second semi-final, he was already trailing 7:8 to #2 ranked player Niels Feijen (NED) when the Dutch missed a shot. He was disturbed by a fly but still tried to execute the important shot which he missed. Grabe ran two racks and took the victory by a hair’s breadth with 9:8.

The initial situation in the final match did speak for Ekonomopoulos since he did not have to come up with as much energy in the semi-final as Grabe had. But things were turned upside down in the final again. Grabe played a one-man-show and Ekonomopoulos was condemned to watch his opponent take point after point. In the end, 9:1 was a fair and just result in favor of Grabe. „I have never ever won a Euro-Tour event before“, stated Grabe after the match, „that’s why it means very much to me“. „I think I will celebrate the victory tonight with a glass or two“ added Grabe with a smile.

The Euro-Tour women’s event will continue tonight and morning at 09:00 am local time.

DAY 2

Szewczyk ends Ouschan’s hopes

Today saw the end of many great players in the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open. Former World Champions like Daryl Peach and Oliver Ortmann did not even get to the single elimination stage here in St. Johann, Austria.

One of the players who did make it was Polish youngster Wojciech Szewczyk. He had to deal with local hero Albin Ouschan in the round of the final 32 players. The match started Szewczyk’s way. He took a quick lead and benefitted from Ouschan’s mistakes. The more mistakes Ouschan committed, the better Szewczyk got going. But at the score of 6:2, Szewczyk played a bad mistake on the 7-ball and gave the rack to Ouschan. The Austrian got second life and brought some excitement back into the match. After 13 racks, Szewczyk’s lead was down to one rack, 7:6. But he stayed calm and went on the hill, winning the rack 8:6. Then, the next rack brought some safety and tactical action. Again Szewczyk turned out to play the better shots and won the match with 9:6. „I am so happy I won the match, even after I have made that severe mistake at 6:2“ said Szewczyk afterwards. „My game collapsed and I am happy that I could still win“, added the Polish player.

Another remarkable clash in the round of the final 32 players was the match between #1 ranked player Nick van den Berg (NED) and Fabio Petroni (ITA). After 9 racks, Petroni was leading 6:3. But van den Berg never gives in and is rightfully leading the European rankings. He turned the match and won with 9:7. In an encounter between two very experienced players, Stephan Cohen (nothing) had the better end over Richard Jones (GBR), winning with 9:8.

The Euro-Tour men’s event will continue tomorrow morning at 10:00 am local time. At 09:00 am local time, the women will start with their tournament.

DAY 1

Souquet out after two rounds

Probably the most famous casualty of day 1 of the Dynamic Billard Austrian open in Hotel Alpina, St. Johann, Austria, is BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER). He lost two straight matches against Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with 7:9 and then to completely unheralded Andreas Koukiadakis (GRE) also with 7:9 after being in the lead with 8:4. After having won the last Euro-Tour in Kyrenia, North Cyprus, this is a huge disappointment for the German superstar.

Other notable results from today include Belgium’s Serge Das losing to Dudanets with 8:9 in his first round match. Then, he remained victorious over Michel Bartol from Croatia with the same result. According to the information on Das’ Facebook page, his opponent dogged some important shots during the 17th rack and allowed Das to stay in the tournament.

Another remarkable result was the 9:2 victory of Radoslaw Babica (POL) over Alan Cuartero (PHI). The filipino player came here with team Kuwait to play his first Euro-Tour event. Cuartero can be regarded as one of the better filipino players. Both players had huh respect for one another before the match and they knew they would not get an easy task. However, Babica played rock solid while Cuartero missed shots and also did not get the flow to his game. In the end, Babica played some tough shots while Cuartero missed too many occasions to score. the 9:2 final result for Babica is absolutely justified. Richard Jones (GBR) got the better of Fabio Petroni (ITA) in the first winner’s round and won the match with 9:7. Nr. 1 and 2 ranked players Nick van den Berg and Niels Feijen (both NED) have won all their matches so far and seem to be right on track for another good result in this year’s Euro-Tour.

The Euro-Tour event will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 am local time.
